This episode was so good and it retroactively makes Season 1 even better.

This one hit way too close to home for me. The panic attacks, refusal to go outside, failure to live up to expectations, all of it basically felt like it was about my life almost exactly, and all of it was portrayed pretty much flawlessly.

Was he really trying his best or did he only think he did? He wasn't used to putting in effort due to talent/getting wrestled by his dad and that simply wasn't enough once he entered middle school. Getting 30 points on a test imply not learning at all, though that might be already because of depression.

Not Keyser Soze posted:I really enjoyed this episode but at the same time I find it amusing that the first phase of some mystical gauntlet everyone talks up as perilous is...remembering that your parents are cool and love you and that you're gonna be okay. I think it was more like placing him in the worst part of his life, when he was in the midst of his depression, except all the experiences he's had since then allowed him to approach it differently than he did before. He was supposed to continue being "stuck" there just like he'd been stuck for the last 3 months. Which is why the witch was surprised he came so early: most people don't overcome that sort of thing so easily. Edit: Leaving also requires him to choose to intentionally abandon his parents. Was it specified why Subaru's dad was so well thought of by people? It came across like he was a minor celebrity of some kind.

That episode did a lot to show why Subaru is the way he is and at times it hit way too close to home.

Subaru was kind of a dick at first but as Re;Zero starts progressing more as a isekai reconstruction after departing the deconstruction train station the more I start to root for him as a relatable expy.

drat he was pathetic as hell in real life, did he even get better before he got isekai'd? Or was getting his poo poo together just a part of the fantasy?

You see that part where his mom tells him take care and he has a flashback where he didn't even turn back to look at her before leaving the house? That was the night he left for the convenience store, after which he found himself in a fantasy world. That was the last time his parents ever saw him.

So I've been wondering, does Echidna "know" Subaru isn't from this world? Are the Witches exempt from Satella's meddling in that regard? Or is it okay since Satella ate the other Witches a long time ago so they are probably already her?Grouchio posted:Episode 5: It will be interesting finding out where the (this episode spoilers) reset point is. I wonder how much of this though is her not "knowing" and is just how the illusion works, i.e she is not truly conscious and is just responding automatically given the inputs like a really advanced robot; or she is in fact conscious and self-aware and aware of her surroundings and if the latter it's interesting that Satella doesn't react to Echidna knowing but did whenever Subaru tried to spill the beans to anyone else including Emilia. Rewatching the Director's cut in preparation for the new season, I notice some people in this thread and reddit talk about Satella, are we as anime only watchers supposed to "know" that it's Satella squeezing Subaru's heart? I feel like it's been very strongly hinted at and is pretty obvious but I don't think they explicitly did so; I know Subaru taunted Betelgeuse a bit about it but not in a super explicit way.

I mean.... in the anime Betelgeuse possesses Subaru... Subaru taunts him and says the witch likes him better. Then he summons the witches punishment by attempting to break the rules. The witch comes to squeeze Subaru and pushes out Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse cries because the witch that he loved so much scorned him, and he was unloved. Presumably Betelgeuse would know better if that was actually the witch's spirit or whatever, even if Subaru, and everyone who says Subaru smells like the witch of envy is wrong. That coupled with the fact that the scent of the witch is something tied to specifically Satella, witch of envy's cult. Not any other mysterious witches. All the other witches are long gone by this point, and it's also heavily implied that the world is skewed to view everything witch like through the lens of Satella's attempt to destroy the world as a witch. It's seems reasonably sure that the scent of the witch is the direct result of Satella magic, Satella cult, or Satella relics and not other witches. Because of it's close ties to the cult in this world.

We have several lines about Subaru smelling of the witch and when Betelgeuse sees the hands that have been squeezing Subarus heart he's all "my love! I've waited so long for your embrace". If it's actually Satella's literal hand or semi magic one is more up in the air. However yes we get enough info to at least convince me it's Satella stroking Subaru's heart when he ties to spoil the plot to other characters.

It's just the natural assumption to make after first learning about the Witch of Envy, and putting various other elements together like the Emilia/Satella connection (whose specifics are unknown, but clearly narratively significant), how RbD wraps Subaru in Witch's Miasma, and that until this arc we had never heard about any other witches. Novel reader's confirmation was technically spoilers but like, everyone going in blind already tended to assume it was the Witch of Envy who transported Subaru and gave him RbD, or at the very least had special interest in him.
