If you wear a mask all day while working and it's a mask that's dense enough to actually keep some particles back, it will make your lungs work harder and it will trap moisture that you'll end up breathing in. That's why a face shield is much superior to a face mask for anyone actually doing work.

Face shields don't actually protect you all that well from infections.

Man I love that you don't read the rest of what I wrote. I'm not saying to not wear masks, I'm saying that working a full workday while wearing a mask is actually a health hazard, especially if done over a longer period of time. So we need to consider a lot less places to be essential and have shorter opening hours for the ones that are, for it to be actually a sustainable thing.

I've worked 10-hour warehouse shifts in the last month wearing a mask. It was uncomfortable as balls. My roommate goes to construction every night for 8 hours. We wash our masks every night. It's fine. Shut the gently caress up.

We need to do a lot of things. This has nothing to do with mask etiquette, which is fine. Wash your mask and bring spares to change if you're still worried. Problem solved.

People doing actual work wear respirator mask all the loving time with no adverse effects on their health. Construction workers, factory workers, firefighters, soldiers, people doing very physically strenuous work often with heavy gear do it all with masks and they're fine.

He hailed from an era where they didn't care much about sterilizing their instruments so that would be a huge adjustment. He was one of the early advocates of anesthesia though so he'd probably be excited about how far they've come.

E: Also he apparently did another amputation once and accidentally cut the guy's nuts off. But still, he was only losing about 10% of his patients when 25% was the average.

I mean, OSHA regs for my part of the world which specify working no more than 3 hours wearing a dust/gas mask, unless it's got a mechanical ventilator attached to assist in breathing? Using these very same reasons as justification?

Babylon Astronaut

Ok, that's not what anyone is talking about. We're talking about surgical, and cloth masks respectively. There's probably a good reason not to wear SCUBA gear 40 hour a week either.

OSHA approved respirators are really hard to breathe through, and you have to be certified by a doctor prior to wearing them for extended periods, because you need excellent lung function. It is not to prevent lung infections, and the masks everyone is wearing are much easier to breathe through, and can be swapped out and washed.

I did get an infection from a mask (actually an air-fed firefighting mask, but a negative pressure one which is just loving awful) but that was impetigo because the nasty gently caress who wore it before didn't sanitize it, and apparently I had the immune system of a toddler thanks to stress.
