I've been putting the osts on in the background while cooking lately and this series has a lot of good ones but I think Judgement has some of the best. the hamura boss fight is one of the best over the top boss themes I've heard

Yeah this was a bright spot but they're still pretty agonizing, and having done Koyuki's, Aida's and Kana's substories only Koyuki's was worth the three different conversations to get there. I did have a single conversation with the last two hostesses for the trophy but that was about it.

Finishing the cabaret club feels like a nice capstone to end the postgame on. I was happy to be done with Clan Creator when I faced down Mutoh on mission twelve but when his underling betrays him and I realized I had at least three MORE missions to go my entire body went :geno: and all will to finish it left my body. The dinner conversations with the three old wrestlers was pretty great, at least.

All of 6 had this bizarre terrible theme of women being property that have to be passed on to another man to look after or whatever, it was very depressing and really kinda put a damper on the whole game for me.
That was off-putting. I liked him a lot, but then he started getting really creepy about Kiyo having a life that didn't involve him. They are not in a relationship and he was acting like he was personally betrayed and that she was like 'ruined' or something.

Majima committing domestic violence was another weird choice. His ex-wife saying, "He had never hit me before" was jarring, and a big thing to just put in your narrative and then never remark upon. I feel like there are some things you should only put in your story if you're willing to explore them and give them time and examination, otherwise they come off flippant.
I try to file that away as 'things I'm going to forget that happened' along with Kiryu slapping Haruka, that creepy Saejima and Haruka meeting, and Akiyama's rape comment. Just weird moments that aren't really addressed properly for how hosed up they are that it is easier for me to ignore instead of reevaluating everything about that character.

For a very horny game, I think the yakuza series does a good job with it's porny elements without making it feel like all women are sex objects to be in service of getting the player off. Female characters aren't all sex workers and have varied stories. They wear clothing that actual women would wear around town and the ones who are sex workers don't all have sexualized outfits. If they do, their outfits look like normal revealing clothing and not impractical strips of fabric that would be impossible to wear if you didn't want all your bits to show at the slightest of movements.

Plot wise, I think does a poor job with it's female characters overall. There are a lot that I like, but most aren't treated well by the series and take a backseat to the male characters. I just wish this was something the series was better at.

To not end this on a downer, this amazing video came up on my recommendations and I've watched it like ten times already. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfr2vU4GGts

Boy the more I play of Yakuza 5, the less I am enjoying it. I feel like there is just too much game.

There are some things I really loving love - like everything about the Haruka/Akiyama chapter, but overall I feel like this game just does everything 4 did but worse.

Maybe the finale will change my mind? I hope it can improve my opinion.

I think putting every protagonist in a different city was a critical mistake, you get no interplay between protagonists until the end and I feel the story suffers for it. It’s been 30+ hours since I played Kiryu’s chapter and at this post I can barely remember what was going on because none of these stories have any overlap at all.

Just finished 4: 42.4% completion in 56 hrs

Definitely the longest I’ve played a game in the series so far in my run, first time I’ve beat all the side stories and taken on Amon, I must have been desperate for side content after the lack of interesting stuff in Y3 because I really got into completionist mode for a bit there especially when it came down to the end and I wanted to get all my characters up to level 20

On the other hand I think that was the least comprehensible story so far in the series. I don’t know, or even really care how the rubber bullet fake assassination poo poo tied into all the contemporary business, or why I fought Arai and Daigo and then was immediately friends with them afterwards. I was, however, extremely invested in the fate of Hana, one of my favorite characters so far, and I was really glad to see her reappear at the end.

It's doable if you don't get yakuza'd out by then. I think it took me about a month to beat 5 and I wasn't playing it everyday and 6 is shorter.

I really do feel like that is how Y5 is and it's frustrating.

Just wrapped Shinada's portion and I wonder if Takasugi's back hurts from carrying that entire loving portion.

As for the side stories, I feel like one of my problems with Yakuza 5 is (as I've mentioned previously) there is just so much to do and most if it is just pretty shallow. Shinada's side story is just doing essentially the same batting swings for two hours straight. Kiryu's is racing the exact same track. Haruka's side story is probably honestly the best because there's the most variation in activities (and the songs are loving bangers).

But also, boy does the game feel like it's punishing you for spending time doing activities because the main plot only comes out in dribs and drabs. Even after finishing Shinada's portion, I still have zero loving clue what is going on. It seems like 90% of the main connective plot is backloaded to the finale.

I fully expect someone to come out and have a 20 minute monologue about how they connect everything (the Nick Fury detective?)

Yakuza 5 may have the most content, but that doesn't make it good. Haruka & Akiyama's chapter is one of my favorite portions of any Yakuza game and raises this game's stature for me far more than I feel like the rest of it deserves.

This isn't to say I think it's a bad game (no Yakuza game is bad, but ones like Y3 are just very less good). It feels very middle of the pack for me, but is also a slight let down so far after playing Yakuza 4.

I hope the finale doesn't disappoint.

i was talking about the level cap, which you can't raise until kamurocho. so, if you hit it early by doing all the unique minigames and substories all that exp is wasted. then you are stuck with random battles to hit the new cap.

Out of genuine curiosity, what would you consider not shallow content in a Yakuza game? Like, to me the appeal of all the side poo poo isn’t that it has vast depth, it’s that there’s so much of it even in a barebones entry like K1/6 and most of its engaging on some level (even if I don’t personally care for shogi/mahjong I can tell they’re just good games I suck at), so I wouldn’t consider 5 any more shallow than the other games. poo poo, id consider the taxi game more in depth than any side thing because it’s racing mixed in with normal taxi driving and the highway course does change over time.

Turn Down the Burndown
Kamurocho

The fire is now at a building on Tenkaichi St. You'll need two fire extinguishers for this, but fortunately you have a good amount of time to do it. Go to the same one in the Kamuro Theater for the previous mission, and there are also a couple in the basement of Millenium Tower. To get to the fire, enter the Lullaby Mahjong building, go out the back and up the fire escape stairs to the roof, then walk around the roof across building so you can leap across to the roof opposite where the fire is. Once you finish, drop down to street level and fight the arsonist

It drives me crazy in a lot of these dialog cutscenes in Y5 how one character will be looking directly at a second character, but the second character will be staring basically one foot to the side of the first character, like for some reason it's like their focal positioning is off.

I don’t remember any rape jokes in 4 (remaster) so that’s definitely gone at least. It was probably always a bad translation anyway since the joke is Hana describing herself as a delicate wallflower when Akiyama knows she’s perfectly capable of defending herself.

Actually I was surprised how genuinely nice Akiyama is to Hana, what with that one substory that in a lot of other things would be “gee, Hana’s depressed about her weight, that means she’s not gonna get any work done I should get her a man” but instead is “hmm, i think Hana’s just fine the way she is but if she feels self-conscious about her weight I should engage in wacky hijinks to find her a man who appreciates her the way she is. :)
