I first heard The Postal Service's Give Up in 2005.

Fifteen years later, I have learned that "sound" can refer to a type of geography and that Puget Sound is not, like... I dunno, I guess I thought it was the name of a local record label or something.

Ugh, Broke is so good. Building Nothing Out of Something I think is my favorite MM release. I have a tattoo on my arm of the hot air balloon anchor thing from the Good News album art, lol.

Amazing, I knew what it was before I clicked it. I think there are a couple more but Dukes Up is heads and tails above the rest of the stuff on there.

My first GF was super into MM from the Lonesome Crowded West/Moon & Antarctica period. V grateful for that, those albums + Building Nothing...+Long Drive...+various other tracks. Not a huge fan of Good News and beyond vs that earlier stuff. drat, prolly gonna get retrospective w my music this next week or two!

Good News just needs a few solid playthroughs to grow on you.

Lol at that video, that’s great.

The live version of Broke on Baron Von BS is good. I like it better than the Interstate 8 version. But Broke is one of my faves. There are hooks on some songs of theirs from each album that just stick with you and make them stand out. I think A Different City has one of the better ones.

I'm also a much bigger fan of their earlier stuff, not that I really dislike any of it. I saw them live once and the singer dude was such a gigantic dickhole that it sort of turned me off of the idea of giving them any more of my money, though.

Conversations about Modest Mouse’s early stuff being better? Am I back in 2005?

:darksouls:
saw them live in 2015 which was well past the era of drunk Brock, it was a fun show. at webster hall in NYC which was relatively small for them. the sound was terrible because it was webster hall, so there were some letdowns like a version of dashboard with completely inaudible violin (though, hey, I appreciated that they tried to have a live violin for that)

when I was in high school I was a huge fan of Good News and We Were Dead, so I only discovered their earlier stuff relatively recently. I don't think I've ever heard Building Nothing Out of Something so I'll think I'll have to give that a shot

this is my favorite off their first two records though I don't think they've ever played it live? would be interested to see an even further drawn out version of it

there's a lot of new albums today and here are my thoughts on some of them

Cut Copy - Freeze, Melt - there are exactly zero bangers on this one, which is fair since their last album was full of them. instead, it's just a chill 40 minutes. lots of 60 second intros before vocals enter, lots of beats that only really pick up at the climax of a song, lots of big washy synths. nothing here I'd put on a playlist, but that's probably intentional. you could tell me that this is like a b-sides comp and i'd believe you. they also made lil visualizer videos for all the songs which is fun. in better times this would be a disappointment, but it's eerily fitting for now

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crLkKS0hGXU

Bully - SUGAREGG - reviews are telling me that, after two self-produced albums with her band, the frontwoman went solo and hired a producer for this one. I would never have guessed, because this sounds exactly how I remember the first album sounding. that's not a bad thing! there's been a lot of rock bands falling into an overproduction trap lately (lookin' at you, Sleater Kinney), and this deftly avoids that problem, at the expense of not sounding particularly fresh. maybe I'd mind that in better times, but right now, it's nice to have an unchallenging 38 minutes of noisy pop punk

https://bullythemusic.bandcamp.com/track/stuck-in-your-head

The Killers - Imploding The Mirage - after four songs of this album, nearly half of it, I had my review all prepped: a nice, pithy, "why do we need this band when we have The War On Drugs"? the first four tracks just reminded me of why I can't stand this band: they've made several completely unimpeachable, incredible anthemic bangers, and then have spent 15 years chasing that and failing. there are plenty of other bands chasing this sound that have done a hell of a lot better with it, but none of them sound like they're trying so hard

but, like, have you ever seen a band live - an opener, or maybe a second-line band at a festival you've never really "gotten" - and just kinda stand there, unimpressed, as you slowly process the full picture of the band's sound, and then some song comes on that busts it wide open and you suddenly find yourself hanging on every note? that happened to me, for the loving Killers, and I was not ready for it. the second half of this record isn't, like, some complete genre deviation, but it really feels like they stopped trying to chase a huge hook and just focused on writing good fuckin' songs. it turns out, when brandon flowers isn't trying to project his voice all the way to the back of the glastonbury crowd (and particularly when he enlists Weyes Blood to do it instead), it becomes a lot more interesting. in an era when i generally breathe a sigh of relief when i see a 40 minute runtime and a single LP release, I actually came away from this wanting more. more of the loving Killers! maybe the first good surprise of 2020
