DID YOU KNOW James Doohan used to live in a van and make his way by attending Star Trek conventions? Acting is mostly a working class profession. DID YOU KNOW One time he received a letter from a suicidal Trekkie? Scotty posted:I called her and I said, 'Hey, this is Jimmy Doohan. Scotty of Star Trek. I'm doing a convention in Indianapolis, and I want to see you there. So they meet Scotty posted:I saw her. Boy, I'm telling you — I couldn't believe what I saw. It was definitely suicide. Somebody had to help her, somehow. And, obviously, she wasn't going to the right people. He tells her to keep showing up at conventions Scotty posted:That went on for two or three years, maybe 18 times. And all I did was talk positive things to her. And then all of a sudden — nothing. I didn't hear anything, and I had no idea what was really happening to her because I never really saved her address. Eight years later, I get a letter saying, 'I do want to thank you so much for what you did for me, I just got my master's degree in electronic engineering. What a lovely man.

He was also Canadian by birth, and lost the middle finger on his right hand in combat at Juno Beach in a friendly fire incident. They took great pains across TOS, the movies, and his guest spot on TNG to make sure you never noticed it. Also, unrelated but similar in nature, John Rhys Davies is also missing half of one of his fingers and while shooting The Lord of the Rings, the makeup crew fashioned him a prosthetic fingertip rather than try to conceal his hand. This led to him constantly loving with people on set by pretending to stab the prosthesis or rip it off to gross people out.

They were going to have Scotty do all the voices on TAS because he was good at accents. Big Len Nimoy put paid to that. I think this is true

He also helped foil a hyper advanced alien plot by drinking one of the aliens under the table

As I recall, he was a military engineer during the war, and Scotty was significantly based off how he acted IRL.

Jiminy Christmas! Shoes! posted:Reminder that Scotty used to pad his estimates to look like a miracle worker. “Under-promise, over-deliver.” A motto in my family for decades now, and it goes right back to Scotty.

Back in the early 90's a friend inherited a bunch of money and meant to go to to a car show in DC that was pushing the upcoming new models so he could decided what he wanted to buy. Unfortunately the same weekend there was a goofy tricked out customs car show in Baltimore, and he mistakenly drove to that one instead. We realized the error pretty quickly and decided to run over and check out the OG 1967 Batmobile before we headed to DC when they announced that in 20 minutes some playboy bunnies would be doing a bounce and greet in one area, and James "Scotty from TV's Star Trek" Doohan would be signing autographs in another area. Realizing the crowd was more the fake boob demographic than Trek, we decided to wait around. The end result was getting to take up more of his time than we could reasonably expect, and he was super congenial with no hint of being disappointed that the Bunnies had trapped him in a back corner with an orbiting pair of babbling nerds. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

oh but seriously I posted:They were going to have Scotty do all the voices on TAS because he was good at accents. Wouldn't surprise me, iirc he plays a lot of the one-shot characters. Apparently, Doohan tried out a bunch of different Scottish accents for the show, but the only one the suits thought American audiences could understand was the ridiculous one he ended up with.
