I'm trying to remember how far back (e.g.; which timeline iteration) was the scene where Rem dies in the mansion and everyone thinks Subaru was responsible. Then, due to Beako initiating a pact with Subaru to protect him, all the mansion's big guns (Ram/Roswaal/Beatrice) turn on each other.

Roswaal's whole "keikaku doori!" moment doesn't make sense if it was devised prior to the point that loop is initiated.

Maybe I wasn't reading the scene properly, but that whole interaction back in season 1 never made much sense to me.

Late to this, but nah.

His mistake is that, because Emilia is so serious and earnest about facing challenges, and becoming queen and helping others, he hadn't considered that she doesn't actually want to face and overcome her past (which he knows nothing about).

It's essentially the difference between overcoming this trial being a personal goal to become stronger and prove herself and others she can be queen, and it being an obstacle she's emotionally unprepared and unwilling to deal with but that she feels she's expected to regardless. If it's the first then painful as it might be for her all he could do was try and ease her anxiety and cheer her on, which he did, but then Garfield presents the second scenario along with the question "if you can do it yourself, isn't it better if you do it in her place?"

But if she doesn't tell him anything, how can he know? Moreover, he's right in that simply overcoming the trials in her stead potentially hurts her chances to fulfill her goal of becoming queen. So it's something of a reverse of the situation with the announcement of the royal selection back at the capital - they might've made up, but they're still pending a good long chat about their thoughts, feelings, and boundaries.

It's played for laughs but the Memory Snow OVA shows Puck and Roswaal had a full DBZ-style fight when they first encountered each other, which they both look fondly back on as having been quite "exciting".

There's a few possibilities here, one is that Roswaal momentarily lost his cool seeing one of his Servants dead in front of him; another is he was pretending to get upset enough to force the issue in order to motivate Subaru to reset the loop. Or something else.

Roswaal doesn't seem like someone who looses his cool over a dead servant.

I took it to mean that Roswaal and Beatrice's relation to one another is tenuous at best and not really based around any kind of mutual friendship. Beatrice was protecting a guest she had known for less than a week and who they suspected of killing Rem, and she appeared ready to use violence to keep him safe.

Also from the way Roswaal is presented throughout the series, both in dialog and just body language/actions I had assumed he was extremely powerful, on the same footing as Beatrice and Puck. He certainly behaves and is treated as if that is the case.

Beatrice being ready to throw down over someone she's known a week and doesn't really like is more a function of just how seriously pacts are taken by some in this world. She couldn't care less about Subaru's well being but a pact it a pact, even one you made halfheartedly to get a pest to leave you alone.

Is it really the case that Beatrice doesn't like Subaru? I get the feeling Subaru wouldn't have such a knack for finding her if she didn't on some level like the attention? Lots of people like it when you check in on them and say hi but quickly have their "social energy" expended and shoo you out.

While all that is true, it's been implicit that Beatrice is actually a caring person, and her misanthropy is an effort to keep others away so she doesn't become attached.

She's got very conflicting feelings about Subaru as a result of his constant efforts to reach out to her.

She has warmed up to him now but keep in mind when he made that pact in that timeline he was still new and on everyone's nerves.

I might be misremembering, but the door is always at a random location hidden among the hundreds in Roswaal's massive estate, so finding it consistently should be statistically impossible. I always took finding her room at will to be a weird luck ability innate to Subaru, akin to Kazuma for KonoSuba always being able to take panties with his steal skill.

Makes you think then when Subaru couldn't find her anymore after upsetting her; which either implies she was letting him find her or Subaru is subconsciously refusing to let himself face her again until he made good to her.

Did Roswaal actually attack Subaru there? I feel like I only remember Ram really going after him.

edit: I looked up the episode, and he says he's a little angry and then I think it's implied that he fired a single attack at Beatrice or something, but that's it; he doesn't pursue and Beatrice obviously isn't killed by him.

Subaru has a weird affinity to Spirits. That's why Puck messes around with him so much and that red minor spirit messed him up a little when purple-hair gave it to him..

Yeah, not giving Subaru any specifically strong powers, requiring him to basically have to make do with the abilities of his friends allows them to really keep the tension going without having to constantly increase the power levels. More like jojo in that sense, with it feeling like both sides have to be careful to not get gibbed.

Except that Subaru wants to get gibbed occasionally to stop horrible things from happening from his friends, or at least give him the opportunity to prevent them from happening.

I enjoyed Ram and Frederica being sparring partners in banter, and the episode also confirmed my suspicions from last time that Ram definitely has... SOME kind of vestigial recollection (her face when Subaru mentioned Rem during the argument with Roswaal was not the face of someone who wasn't affected at all). Interesting implications on the absolute limits of Gluttony's power.

Well it is a name that sounds a lot like hers. But Ram herself said that looking at Rem's body all she could feel was a blank, despite being able to clearly feel they were related.

She said herself seemed to recall being tossed before Subaru even mentioned Rem this loop, but there's absolutely no context where he'd be allowed to do that except the specific case with her sister, and with Rem being written out of her memories, it's got to be hella confusing to try and rectify that thought.

It's why she was confused when he mentioned tossing her. Because it's probably makes very little sense in her memory.
