The first weeks of the protests where the Columbus statues were getting pulled down, Italian Americans from my old neighborhood were reposting the Columbus Sopranos clip and the bike scene from A Bronx Tale saying that’s how they need to treat any liberal who touches the statue. Then the mayor tore that motherfucker down for us.

You know, Dominic is flawless as junior but I believe I remember correctly that Sirico auditioned as well. Watching that old 1989 interview with him again where he's so smooth, he's so great as Paulie but I think he could have made an amazing junior as well

Steve Schirripa actually being cast as Skip Lipari would've been such a waste. Agent Harris' actor originally auditioned as a mobster and Robert Funaro was originally cast as Ralph Cifaretto which is why he's a main cast member for a bit.

"Talkin Sopranos" tells us that several actors who wound up on the show anyway originally read for other parts. Lorraine Bracco originally read for Carmella, Michael Rispoli (Jackie Aprile) and Steven Van Zandt read for Tony and like 20 other people we still got but who I've forgotten did the same and it was fun for me to imagine. Sirico would have been a cool UNcle Junior but, now that we've seen it, I can't imagine anyone but Dominic in the role. If my memory is right, a LOT of performers who still wound up on the show anyway were looked at for other parts. Same with The Wire and some of those blew my mind but I can't find links to either or remember who was considered for what. I think Michael Imperiolli even said he was brought in for a different role but wanted to play Chris after reading the script.

David Proval was also an early contender for the Tony Soprano role but was put aside because his mobster-side was way too intimidating. Imagine how jarring it would've been to go from Richie Aprile levels of menace to lovable dad. I'm mostly remembering this because  but when I find a source I'll post it here.

Like you said, the Wire did have this going on. Lance Reddick read for Bubbles, but ended up being Daniels. Seth Gilliam (Carver) read for Stringer but ended up being Carver. Gbenga Akinnagbe (Chris Partlow) read for Marlo but ended up being Chris. The real Jay Landsman read for Jay Landsman but ended up being Lt. Mello instead. Jaime Hector (Marlo) read for Cutty iirc but ended up being Marlo. There's probably more I'm forgetting.

Listening to Lorraine Bracco on Talkin' Sopranos, she told her agent before going for the audition that she wanted to play Melfi and not Carmela, and they basically made her promise not to tell Chase until after she got there  They also apparently reacted with,"It's called The Sopranos, not Dr. Melfi!  "

Junior doesn't have much of a physical presence When I watched the last season or two when it was airing, HBO would run next episode preview trailers and they'd sometimes contain scenes or dialogue that didn't make it into the next episode. I'm not a sicko or a deviant but there was a cut one where Tony asks Carmela "did you cum" and I always wondered what the rest of the scene was. Did that ever make it in a deleted scene on a DVD? Again strictly asking as a fan

That's why Gandolfini is a bit heavier and his accent has gotten better by the second episode. During that time in between is when Chase was shopping it around and thought maybe he could shoot another half an hour of material and release it as a film.

I've met so many Tony Sopranos over the years. Boomer dads of a certain age who can switch from generous, charismatic and good-humoured to flying into a snarling rage on a dime. Exuberantly racist in private. Highly unpredictable when drunk. Incredibly possessive, especially about family. I really would never think of paying for a meal when my partner and I are out for dinner with her dad, because what happened to Finn is exactly what would happen to me. Hell, I've known a few Carmelas too. I see a lot of my own parents in both of them; they'd have been the same age at the same time. The Sopranos is great for many reasons, but on rewatch that's what really stands out for me right now. Well growing up in North Jersey, it seemed like every Italian-American family I knew, the dads all pretended to be like Tony. For the most part not as racist in all-white company as Tony. But some definitely were.
