at least for this place it was more management/business interview then anything i've done for sdev positions. not even like, system design stuff. just how to spin up vms and whatnot on azure (which i dont know much about lol). from what i gathered, a lot of communicating with customers and troubleshooting their environments. idk i guess maybe i dont know what a "architect" position even is?

was it a solution architect? i've specifically heard that term as an amazon role that talks to customers and tells them which of the ten thousand aws products are the ones they want

It's fine. I don't even think they're that bad outside of owning a monopoly of streaming porn sites.

More or less, except instead of 100% lonely suckers shelling out there's the 2020 marketing feature that 95% of your userbase doesn't pay a dime and then there are whales who empty their life's savings for you

they extended an offer :yotj:

unfortunately they came back with what's basically my current salary. it's a good thing I anchored high; according to glassdoor their offer will put me *above* the payband offered for that title, and if the project they're hiring me for goes well the future promotions that come from it will be lucrative. so now it's time to ponder over the weekend if i'm gonna bite on this or not.

pros:
  • no longer have to travel whenever this covid garbage finally blows over
  • i can finally see through one of the systems i build instead of opening up my umbrella and flying away like merry poppins once everything is established
  • WAY better 401k matching which isn't trivial
  • very large amount of career potential as i've basically reached the end of the road in my current role

cons:
  • i'll be giving up my bonus which also isn't trivial- however our company has been on the ropes lately and it seems like our bonuses may be cut entirely pretty soon
  • the management here and coworkers are all pretty awesome to work with. i may be jumping into a pool of dipshits. who knows

at the end of the day though our division works as a sort of revolving door where consultants will take jobs with customers and then come back after a couple of years. i've seen it happen multiple times. so if this turns out to be a bad move i can probably hop back once things get back on track here.

the salary is the only thing bugging me. i'm going to counter it up about $10k. i'll probably walk if they don't accept it

Hmm I should check mine out. I'm pretty sure we haven't updated, but I don't think that the individual offers have it either. Though we should be talking about remote work through 2021 even if you decide on an offer with relocation. And should be talking about building out satellite offices to make the density lower.

voiced my many concerns on the hire with too much experience but it didn't ring with my co-worker. they were in charge of making the hire. it took over a week and a half to make that decision to send candidate one an offer lol

the reason was, paraphrasing here, "we couldn't pass up an opportunity to hire talent for cheap"

then earlier this week our team gathered for a half-day chill session at the local park just to gently caress off and not stare at a screen and the real reason came out "i wanted the person who would make my life easier" aaaagggggg it was so selfish

will see how the next couple months go putting someone who is hardware-focused in a software role, remotely. the new hire is the gooniest of goons. i hope you are reading this, friend

Check Indeed.

Establish the Buns

:burger::burger::burger::burger::burger:
I applied to a ton of positions at a bunch of FAA(M/N)Gs and heard back from a few.

Had a few tech screens for different positions and did some live interviews where I wrote code live on codepad, another had a take-home, and one had timed hackerrank problems.

Thought I bombed the live/timed coding. At best I was either barely squeaking in under the time limit with a robust solution, or ran out of time and had some incomplete solution or only handled a handful of inputs.

Still got invited to do a full round of interviews from the ones I've heard back from so far. Some of the interviews involved more coding, still thought I wasn't doing great in the live coding.

One place (and my favorite position I've applied to) is moving really fast and followed up about an hour after my last interview and wanted to "sync up". Friday I had an hour interview with my potential boss, and then another hour with his boss.

I've been told to expect to hear from the recruiter today for that position. I guess I either did better on the coding than I thought, the coding wasn't actually that important, or I made up for it in the whiteboard/personality portions.
