I think this gets to the core of my misunderstanding of emo. When I was younger I never considered the hardcore derived non commercial stuff emo, or at least ever made the connection because I felt emotion in everything I was listening to. That doesn't mean I was versed in that scene, but it just never occured to me. To me those days emo was the scene kids buying music that sounded like pop punk with the whiniest vocals I had ever heard. I don't even remember who those bands were.

A Lifelong Misunderstanding of Emo: The Evil Bob Story.

Rites of Spring supposedly were the 'first emo band.'
And just listen to Embrace, those lyrics are so self conscious and insecure in I guess an emo sense.

I don't think either really embodies would I'd consider the Emo trope. Emo I think of Braid, but also the "Screamo" variety more on the posthardcore side of things.
None of it makes actual sense. In the 1990s everybody was like "Don't label me man, I'm not your product on your shelf."
Remember that Fugazi song? "Stupid loving words."

I don’t remember “emo” being a label back in the early-mid 90s. Or “post hardcore”.

But a lot of my favorite bands from that era could be lumped into either category that had shouty vocalists, weird time signatures or quiet/loud shifts

Braid
Slint
Bitch Magnet
Hoover
Rodan

And these guys on the shirt I’m wearing

i don't remember emo being a buzzword until about 2004. My favorite is "midwestern emo" to describe them being from Chicago or Kansas City or wherever.

In the mid-late 90s Emo hate was very much a thing.

Spazz has the song campaign for emo destruction (1999)

Hellnation released a 5” at war with emo in 1997

I’m sure there are more those are the only two I can remember off the top of my head.

You think so? Chevelle is like Puddle of Mud level fratboy 2003 poo poo. Yea like Creed. I don't know but I hold some of the old second wave emo bands in somewhat higher regard than that. They are still somewhat serious, or just ironic (I Hate Myself). Then you get to Taking Back Sunday which I guess qualifies but that's more hot topic type 14 year old poo poo, even though I still think it's pretty good.

A lot of those bands are just interchangeable to me. Like all the bands that got major label deals when Nevermind exploded. And then got hosed over and vanished. I’m not saying a band signing to a big label is necessarily a bad thing but the advance and promised future imaginary money can be super destructive to a young band

This sound is what defined emo to me in my teens, and I couldn't take it. Once in a while I heard a song that caught my attention because those bands had a post hardcore sound, but in my youth i just couldn't get behind the emo style, I was heavily into punk and hardcore and to me all the stuff that sounded like taking back sunday was too commercial and too poser to me.

At the same time I was introduced to CTTS, and as I have mentioned I never considered them emo. I DO see how they are lumped into that category now. But had I been introduced to more "emo" along the lines of CTTS I probably would not have piled it with what I considered emo at the time.

I guess i'm a poser for not liking emo

Anyway this one just popped into my brain, fun years.

Man outbreak was on fire for a minute there. That one EP was really good. I guess ceremony came along and took over as bridge nine royalty. Also didnt help that they couldnt make anything that lived up to that one EP.

Yeah, the Eaten Alive EP (all the bad brains covers, soo good) and You Make Us Sick were legendary when they came out. I've got love for their later albums, but when I think outbreak it's their early stuff.

Mineral is top tier, one of the best. Both albums, the first one is harder and the second more restrained. I also liked The Frog Queen or whatever it was, solo album from SDRE guy. The first SDRE is a little played out, having listened to it so much.

I guess the Bass player of The Nerve Agents said some dumb racist poo poo, which the band posted a statement about disavowing him and the comments. Also stated they wouldn't be moving forward with a 20 year reissue of Days of the White Owl, which sucks, and definitely destroying any chance of a lil reunion tour or show (as unlikely as it may have been.) Consider me bummed, one of my all time favorite bands, and one that shaped my musical interests and influence when I was young...

Cap’n Jazz is one of the all time greats. I know that lots and lots of bands follow in their footsteps and go for that manic fancy energy but to my ears no one ever hits the same as the Cap’n.

They also have, conveniently, a greatest hits record that IIRC is just their entire didcorgraphy of 1:50 and 2:14 minute long songs, it’s like oh never mind here u go
