Zombieween 2 is probably the best Halloween movie, and I've seen around 3 of them :colbert:

I'm fine with calling it second best. That's a pretty strong statement on it's own, no need to get crazy here.

Late Phases was a solid werewolf movie. It holds a bleak tone in what's otherwise a light fun genre. While there aren't a lot of scares, there is a lot of atmosphere and intensity.

I really need to revisit this one. I saw it during a film festival where I was watching at least two movies a day for over a week and was exhausted by the time I got to it. It's got all the pieces I'm looking for in a horror but I found it really slow and plodding.

I really did like the idea of a monster preying on a seniors community though.

The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers has assembled one hell of a cast for his next movie, a viking revenge film titled The Northman. Known cast includes Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe, and it seems to have leaked this week that musician Björk is also part of the ensemble.

Björk, who starred in Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark back in 2000, is reportedly playing the “Slav witch” in the film, with Kate Dickie (The Witch) also joining the cast.

The “viking revenge saga” is said to be set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century.

Eggers wrote the screenplay with Icelandic poet and novelist, Sjón.

I'm going to advance a theory here: the people who came to see Rob Zombie's Halloween came for the license, not for him, and they didn't like what they saw so they didn't come back. ZH2 took barely more than $5m more than the original H2 did 28 years earlier, and that's in unadjusted numbers - over that period ticket prices almost tripled. I'm not going to comment on his skills as a director as they're not relevant, but it's pretty clear that he's making the movies he wants to see and those movies aren't what anyone else wants to see.

I agree with this!

I think that the werewolf sub-genre is a little starved because the wolfman is one of the few spookies that doesn't follow the law of conservation of mass.

Which gets a hard "no" from most people when trying to suspend disbelief.

I would also still appreciate some danger.

I think the pace in Late Phases seemed off because they burnt a lot of time figuring out what's happening - after the audience already knows it's a werewolf movie.

There are other mystery elements that pay off, but "is there a werewolf in this werewolf movie?" is the weakest.

I'd really advise watching them in order. There's a fun "yes, and..." quality between the sequels that'll be lost if you jump around.

Alright, I’ll do that then. Still waiting on my Draugar rec, though — Grettir vs Glamr is my favorite episode in medieval lit.

Going back to the Rob Zombie films for a second, I've been watching horror since the 80s and watched House and Rejects and remember thinking House was just whatever and just hated the gently caress out of Rejects because it felt overly sadistic.

I feel a rewatch coming on.

Wolf Guy isn’t a typical werewolf movie. Instead it’s “what if Wolverine was Kolchak?” It’s pretty good.

Does it have werewolves? I hastily threw that list together using a bunch of other recommended werewolf lists and "hidden gem" articles/comment sections. As I have done for every genre so I know theres some real silly additions in those lists. I'm just surprised no one has mentioned the Sonic movie on that screenshot...
