:rip: Eleider Alvarez. You waited forever a shot against Adonis that never happened, knocked out Kovalev then lost a boring rematch and got knocked out the ring by the plasterer from the local council while having way too much Vaseline on your face

Postol put a good fight together against Jose Ramirez, who just edged the decision out. This should clear the way for a unification at 140 for the UNDISPUTED Championship

In before I get hit with "you think they all look alike" but JCR reminds me in many ways of Danny Garcia, especially at this stage in their careers. Both really seem to fight up or down to their level of competition but always manage to just win. Taylor might just be that level that he can't get past like Garcia with Thurman or Porter though but I'm not really convinced and think it will be closer than most are pegging it to be. Obviously if/when he moves up to welter things I think he would take a few losses against the elite for sure.

Being reported that DAZN is having major buyers remorse with the Canelo contract so it's probable he won't fight in 2020

i read Mike Coppinger's piece about this in The Athletic and what I gathered was that DAZN is not doing well financially (partially because their fights have not been the best, partially because they don't really have much else to watch on it unlike ESPN+/Showtime Anytime/hell even UFC Fightpass) and is looking to cut and run

with Peter Nelson gone at HBO, you think they get back in the fight game?

Aa much as I personally would love that i seriously doubt it just because they seem to be leaning so heavily into HBO Max. I think there is still a place for HBO sports but it's mainly going to be producing documentaries and episodic programming like Hard Knocks, 24/7 and Real Sports

Since Dan was let go from ESPN he's been pretty spicy on Twitter, especially with politics which has been pretty cool to see.

It's amazing to me that DAZN would sign a nine figure contract with Canelo in which they have to pay him $30 million per fight but also they can't tell him who to fight.

Pretty clearly they are just having buyers remorse and Covid is their way to try and get out though honestly they probably wouldve tried to do so at some later point even without it. In retrospect, unless Canelo was going to fight GGG levels opponents every time out which just isn't possible, it was a terrible contract from the start.

In my uneducated opinion they completely took the wrong way trying to build their US business. They should tried to wait a few years until their global business was established as a market leader (I know they are still doing well in most markets outside of America) and just throw a billion at an NBA or NFL package.

Edit: Also having specific contractual language saying who a boxer can/cannot fight is an Ali act violation

I have zero desire to ever see Canelo-Masvidal or Canelo-Khabib but either of those would absolutely draw more than Callum Smith or BJS.

Also, assuming that this trickles down to the rest of the Golden Boy stable then Ryan Garcia, Vergil Ortiz Jr, JoJo Diaz, David Lemieux, Jorge Linares and others may be on the shelf for a while

a guy on Reddit said that he used to work at DAZN and apparently it was doomed from the start. they hired people who Didn't Know poo poo About Boxing to work on the fights, their business model was based mostly around super-fights and that backfired (because people will pay that $20 for the one fight they want to see and cancel right after, or go to a Dave and Buster's or a sportsbook and watch it for less than that), and really bad promotion compared to ESPN or PBC.

it was an interesting idea, though, and ESPN+ has made it work because it costs less and has a lot more to offer (soccer, college sports, UFC cards, rugby, a daily free NHL game, and so forth). but considering streaming services and history promoting fights, i'm hearing someone's music...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne7ugsMZe7M

One of the better explanations as to why, in hindsight, the contract was doomed from the start was actually summed in (of all places) an Instagram comment I saw. Basically Canelo is the top draw in North American boxing but because of the language barrier* and his relative lack of personality he just can't breakthrough to that kind of top tier draw that Mayweather was. He really just isn't the type to go for a big cash grab like fighting Khabib or Oscar (or God forbid one of the Paul brothers) so other than the GGG trilogy there is really nothing for him to crack the mainstream. Fights against Callum Smith, BJS, David Benavidez, Caleb Plant and even Beterbiev or Bivol are interesting as hell for existing boxing fans but don't grow the brand like DAZN US needs to justify that investment.

*I know Canelo speaks way more English than he lets on but he doesn't out a combination of pride in his heritage and ( I know this sounds terrible) he frankly sounds kind of weird when he speaks it and I think he realizes that.

Edit: it really fits into Canelo positioning himself as the biggest in the sport of boxing (e.g. his "No boxing, No life" merch) but not an entertainer like Floyd or Conor
