Given how often he claims in the video that Lovecraft is lighthearted, fun, and easy-reading, also that it has no deep themes and there's nothing significant to think about, I don't think he likes Lovecraft or the mythos very much.

Going by his other video titles he apparently seems to think that lovecraft, personally, was super cool? So uh, maybe he's just a big racist who likes the other big racist's works in an entirely uncomplicated fashion.

Which is odd because even then you would have to appreciate that lovecraft's work is driven by racism whether you think the racism is good or whether you think that the racism allowed him to describe a more general concept of terror in the face of incomprehensibly vast and malevolent entities and environments, you still have to, presumably, realize that racism is a thing in lovecraft? Unless you actually don't know anything about lovecraft and read the books in an entirely naive way without knowing anything about the dude.

But any understanding of the books in context would have to reach the conclusion that racism is a totally valid and in fact, important part of lovecraft stories, whether you think it's good and should be emulated or whether you think it's bad and should be either consciously excluded to allow more people to enjoy it or that it should be faced up to, or that systemic racism actually might constitute a cosmic horror in and of itself, with the scale of it and sense of powerlessness you can feel when on the receiving end of it actually fitting very well into a lovecraftian story.

So I'm gonna go with "he knows lovecraft is racist, thinks it's good, but is too cowardly to say that"

Eh, there were non-racist white suffragists who led integrated groups (Lucretia Mott was one), but more importantly there were Black suffragist groups that were extremely awesome.

Susan B. Anthony, however, was a big old racist and classist, and had connections with old money types who wanted the white women’s vote to dilute the Black men’s vote, and because she had the :10bux: behind her, she had way more power than the leaders of the Black and integrated groups.

There is a lot of good journalism about Black suffragists coming out this year, and it is definitely a “what could have been” kind of moment.

My point is that it's really odd to phrase it as "I would have done it properly." when you have literally no idea what you would have been like back then versus the environment you were raised in now, and that it's weird to make a retrospective judgment of moral errors in history by framing it as something you would have fixed had you been there.

It's just an extremely bad way of saying something by presenting yourself as an important part of the equation instead of just presenting it in a third person context without the weird connotations of self-importance.

Like if it were me I would have properly blown Hitler up during Operation Valkyrie.

I don't have any issue with her point, she just made it terribly.

An early splinter of Christianity in North Africa. During the last major persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, the governor of Africa (roughly Tunisia now) was satisfied with those who handed over their texts (the Bible didn't exist yet) and renounced their faith.

The persecutions ended when Constantine took over, and it became a huge deal over if people who had done that should be allowed to rejoin the church. The Donatists said no. They continued to oppose Constantine himself also when the Emperor tried to mediate as part of his consolidation of the church, though, and took a hardline interpretation of Christianity, setting off riots and being condemned as heretics.

More specifically for the tweet, Donatists believed that priests must be free of sin for confession and other sacraments to be valid. This proved difficult in practice, so this shitbag is complaining that people are upset at him for not being a perfect saint and that if this is the standard that leaders must be held to by the left then progressivism is doooooooomed. In reality they are mad at him for being an unrepentant abuser.

Basically, the majority of angels in the setting have varying degrees of contempt for humanity, and think that doing just about anything that makes them appear closer to humanity is a sign of weakness on their part.

White Chain is pretty much the only one of them that still actively gives a poo poo about their original mission of protecting and helping humanity, and pays the price for that both by being the angel who’s died and reincarnated the most out of them all, and by getting banished from their territory when her form becomes too womanly for their liking.

But the nutjob that got into an argument at Bunnings about wearing a mask, is also a witch and a healer, (she claims to have healed a former PM from negative energy) and all that jazz. Restrictions that are working, by the way. As I type. ew have had the lowest new cases in more than a month.

Here is a link to a news story about it that has the video and a radio interview with her. Beware it is from the Murdoch press.

I think in context of the original tweet it is entirely reasonable to suggest that the decision to exclude black people from large parts of the suffragette movement was wrong and that many people, being the people they are today, would not do that if given the choice?

Like just because people in the past were wrong because of environmental circumstances or whatever doesn't make them not still wrong. You can absolutely believe that they were a product of their time and also garbage from a current understanding of the issue. You don't need to like people from the past. It's not about "We have to either stan them or hate them." It's an ego thing: everyone wants to think they would have been the good guy in history, so everyone in the past who doesn't meet modern social standards was retroactively doomed to Hell. You need to be able to recognize who was garbage even by that context.

I'm not necessarly sure about that, I think it's more that we should appreciate that even if people might be key figures in a movement it is entirely reasonable and desirable that the movement should entirely eclipse and supercede them, and that they be relegated to, at best, useful contribitors in their time but not people to be admired.

It ties in well with the lovecraft discussion, I think. He was a garbage person but his work, I think, has spoken to a lot of people that he certainly wouldn't have even considered human, much less capable of appreciating something in what he was writing. But it doesn't make him less garbage that he did that, and we can take the ideas it inspires in people today and simply use how how we want, make something better of it.

I think it's more that people are tired of lionising people from history or saying we have to be deferent to their memory because they did something good while also doing bad things. Why not instead simply take the good things and run with them on their own merit? The dead do not own their ideas and aren't in a position to care what you think about them.

And hopefully when we die people will do the same to us.
