Reinventing the notion of crime is a mental distraction from really easy to understand and straightforward flaws in our criminal justice system. But on a side not, imagining poor people who involve themselves in actions we would call crime as Aladdin isn't loving helping anyone. There are people who actually do murder and steal for selfish and unjustifiable reasons. And while their actions can generally be connected to broader inequity in our society, pretending that they're Aladdin or Jean Valjean is not helpful for them. We need to accept them for who they are and what they did and still be able to say, "That person deserves dignity because they're a person." We need as a society to believe that degrading, violent, and dehumanizing punishments have no place in our society regardless of the crime. Loss of autonomy--be it through fine, community work, or humane and restorative imprisonment--is in of itself the consequence.
