a motif would be recurring imagery/symbolism, basically. here it's the consistent references to them being in an hrpg

but fetish content by itself isn't really the purpose of the manga. every time they bring something like the hgame stat sheet it's setting up another "oh, you wanted to be a girl loved by girls" *mc blushes and looks down* panel

yeah, like the corruption used in the latest chapter, it was def playing into it as its use of a porn motif. the entire setup is to make you think she is going to start reveling in sexual decadence and instead its her just saying "i am going to be a cute lady forever"

I don't think "fetishy" is necessarily the right word, but the charm skill and the increasing focus on turning other people into girls whether they want it or not is a little offputting for me. It's becoming less about the hero wanting to be a girl loved by girls, and more about how everyone on the planet secretly wants to be a girl loved by girls and therefore it's cool and good to spread that to the unsuspecting masses by any means necessary.

"Whether they want it or not" i.e. unconsenting is the crux of my unease. It's the "forced" part of, well, you know. The guild member requested it, so whatever, but that one hiring adventurer did not. That gave me some pause.

The concert thing is less clear. I assume all involved knew the effects.

The rest of it, whatever.

Also strange to me is the insistence on all girls being small cutesy etc (I might be wrong on this). That's not a bad thing but...there's many kinds of girls out there? Not all of us are like that. And every time I see a work like this it's always the same drat thing. Give us some variety and representation please.

this kinda bugs me too but its not really trying to make sweeping statements just play into the fantasy of the whole "wow get a cis woman body easily and lesbians like me" with like humor and that viewpoint is just kinda ignoring everything else. it happening to more people gives it a commonplace feeling which makes it feel quick and easy.

if you write a series where everyone is incredibly happy to be girls you're probably exploring some stuff yourself so im willing to give the author some slack

like its basically of the same genre as jokes about 5g towers making everyone girls where people go 'haha i wish' or whatever, jsut messing around with the transformative fantasy

Pollyanna posted:

this is true but most transwomen probably wish their own body was smaller or cuter, at least at first, which again also just feels like the author messing around with the transformative fantasy

yeah like, the transformation style stuff just doesn't play into that as often. its self insert wish fulfillment, realism just doesn't factor in. and of course one person's wish fulfillment isn't everybody's

Honestly this reminds me a bit of early El Goonish Shive before Dan Shive figured out that their gender was melting.

at least with the terminology stuff, it is true that there are people that unfortunately fetishize that kind of indulgence (I'm not going to play armchair psychologist about any latent gender issues here) and remember that any manga that we get in English has gone through several pairs of hands. the original author might not have had those intentions but a translator might have or an editor or whatnot. and there's really no way to tell.

I'm just happy to read transformative gender fantasies because they're comforting and helped get me through my transition. Even if the intention behind them isn't always the purest.

my main is a lala specifically because im so tall in real life lol Though I do like how the elezen are so close to me irl (minus ears)

also in stormblood you'll find a tribe of au ra who believe in reincarnation and as such place no importance whatsoever on gender, even with the large amount of sexual dimorphism in the race.

for real tho the only thing i can think of that deals that much with bisexuality is utena. theres other stuff with bi characters but not much that really explores the identity. probably because of the whole yaoi/yuri genre thing, usually if a character is bi its still primarily interested in their same-sex relationships.

Honestly, yeah, that makes sense and truthfully I figured it was a long shot request anyway. I appreciate the input.

Yeah, been there; both with my queerness and my transness. The little voice telling you that you're just an idiot trying to steal someone else's struggle to give yourself identity is an rear end in a top hat. Don't listen to that voice.

It's when you feel actually happy about your gender presentation or the way people are interacting with you in a gendered way or your performance of gender & how it's perceived in general, as opposed to just kind of tolerating it or feeling dysphoria

Yeah, part of this is kind of me working through the process of gradually drowning that voice out. I've been very slowly talking about it privately with my online friends, which led to taking up some very small signifiers here and there but not really posting about it, and I think this is the first time I've really said anything publicly. And I pretty much had to slam that barebones post through because I was already trying to mentally talk myself out of making it lol.

I appreciate the words. It's...I don't know. The rational part of me knows that absolutely none of this is unique to me; plenty of other people have gone through it and continue to go through it. But at the same time it's also very nice to see that stated and to know it's not unique to me. That's contradictory as hell I guess but I'm not sure how else to put it. But seriously, thanks :unsmith:
