New Dirty Projectors song is pretty great https://youtu.be/FyU5dHmmFmE Also their latest tiny desk at home performance is so good. https://youtu.be/DSgJ_6sOBB8 I’m actually curious how they did this — is there a video chat app with low enough latency that they could actually perform live? Or did each person individually record their part and have them edited together?

My Modest Mouse Hot Take is that No One's First and You're Next is their best overall release ever. As far as LPs go, I started with Good News and that's still my favorite but they're all good. Yes, even the newest one. I've seen them more than any other band I think. Saw them open for REM in 2008, saw them at the Wellmont in 2010, at Governor's Ball in 2012, at Forest Hills with Brand New in 2014, at Prospect Park in 2015, and at Kings Theatre in 2018. The Wellmont show was probably my favorite, they did The Whale Song and it was amazing. I feel lucky as only the last show I saw wasn't fantastic. It wasn't a bad show at all, but Isaac had a cold during that part of the tour and it threw off the rhythm of some of the songs. He sounded okay but they kind of rushed through some of the songs.

Here's a couple things I can't get enough of recently. First here's Skating Polly, a band that was apparently really popular for established rock musicians to rep for a while. The drummer of Flaming Lips used to wear their shirts at shows. Anyway their singer is super young, she was 16 when this album came out. Lots of natural talent, she does a pretty startlingly spot-on Courtney Love on a few songs but this one's sweeter and less screechy. Heavy Plumtree vibes, very earnest, reminds me a lot of being in love in high school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNdiPi6Sy3o We're gonna change gears to post-punk for the next one. This is Sweeping Promises, a brand-new Boston band. Pretty minimal three-piece doing what would ordinarily be by-the-book post-punk but their singer is loving astonishing. Crazy pipes on her, in a genre normally defined by pretty restrained performances. The back half of the album has that cool, sophisticated sound that Omni pull off so well, but with a female singer it's even more unique and classy sounding. She's also not a hot, skinny white girl, which is very cool. Blue and Falling Forward are standouts for sure, but honestly the whole album is just impeccably made. An absolute, front-to-back banger of a first album. Very excited to hear more from them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGIBtCJxnTQ

I've Got It All (Most) is the standout for me I randomly decided to listen to Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle by Bill Callahan, which I'd tried a few times over the years but it never clicked. This isn't a particularly new release, but Haley Heynderickx's 'I Need To Start A Garden' has felt like a very apropos album for the moment, and there's some great songs on it. Definitely in the same general vein as like, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers etc. but more melodic folk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyvYIYwLzTw Sharks Eat Bear posted:yeah no shade, it's solid. 'Let's Move To The Country' is still real solid as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzZL_gXwJEQ Also, what a remarkable album cover he chose to put on that one.

Despite the absolute tearing into of the Killers on the last page, I am really enjoying their new album. I think I have the benefit though of not really discovering them until this year. Spaceman is my favorite track of theirs across all of their albums, and I don't have a favorite track yet on Imploding the Mirage. Open to recommendations of similar bands.

Spaceman is my favorite track of theirs across all of their albums, and I don't have a favorite track yet on Imploding the Mirage. the war on drugs takes the same heartland rock/springsteen inspirations but goes much more intricate and chill with it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsoqmFL1vlU curious: any of y'all watch any of these quarantine paid livestream concerts happening over the next few months? seems like a lotta bands (especially ones with releases coming up) are realizing they aren't touring anytime soon and are doing $10/$15 streams, some of which come with album bundles and such. i saw one of IDLES's three streams last weekend, and while they're a solid studio band and an incredible live band, they're... not exactly radiohead when it comes to "live from the studio" performances. they posted the setlists for the shows in advance, which, while making it easy to decide which to buy, did kinda take away from the usual "what are they gonna play next???" mystique. this channel has all of their songs up, it looks like (i don't think this is filez since you can't actually buy a recording of it; it's basically just like a concert bootleg), though i swear the sound mixing is worse on them than it was on the original stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d42CNfE05rM same day, i caught orville peck's "second annual rodeo" stream, which i really dug. orville peck didn't connect with me at all when his album came out last year, and i immediately brushed off what i heard from it as way too cheesy for my tastes. then i caught a video of "take you back" live and completely did a 180; what i had assumed was a gimmick was a genuine performance. i was hoping to see him this year and, well, that didn't work out, so i was super in for a one hour concert. a fun detail about this show was that it actually had an hour of openers (three back to back sets, i think, tho i missed the first one). orville's performance was fantastic and absolutely would have killed on the road, and i was so glad he did the stream. similarly you can't buy an archive, and unfortunately there's no full show rips on youtube, but you can at least see his fuckin incredible cover of smalltown boy, a song i totally considered uncoverable before this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxK--wjPRGU there's two other streams I know of coming up: * Hot Chip on the 5th. this one's weird since it has different "airing times" but I'm pretty sure they're just filming one set and reairing it. what bothers me about this one is there's no on-demand (the two streams I've bought so far had 24 hour on-demand, so if your internet died or whatever you could rewatch it), which is especially dumb if they're recording it for "re-airing" anyways. i'm bummed because I absolutely adore Hot Chip but I think I'll just hope a good rip of this pops up * future islands are doing a livestream on october 9, the day their new album comes out. this one also doesn't let you rewatch it but i'll probably gamble on it since i love future islands and at least it will be actually live. i expect/hope this is just an hour and 15 minutes of samuel herring staring directly into the camera while singing, never breaking eye contact prayer group posted:We're gonna change gears to post-punk for the next one. i ended up buying the hot chip livestream since i've got nothing going on this afternoon and it's pretty good, seems like the same setlist they played last year but they've got a lotta fuckin bangers to put together in a row. recommend buying the restream tonight if you like them at all they've got an actual crowd which i have mixed feelings about, but the setup is cute, it's at a historic theme park i'd feel better if those pods were strictly, like, household based, since if you're just goin with your mates you're sort of missing the "social" part of "social distancing," but hopefully it goes okay e: now everyone in the pods have just run down to the center and front of the aisle on these wide shots, lmao. this is why i do not go outside these days abraham linksys fucked around with this message at 21:39 on Sep 5, 2020 |
