Strange little retcon here. Why "for a full year"? So Luna's mom only hatched this plan a year ago and wasn't mean until then? Again, unclear why Mookie would do this, not sure what he was going for.
While we're on that, setting aside the fact this isn't true (I will abide none of Mookie's ridiculous retcons, especially when he brags about neither planning ahead nor having a bible of character info to consult/read old strips while plotting) given what we saw earlier, how would Dominic actually know this? Croona didn't say so, and neither did Luna. His sight doesn't work in a fashion that gives him total omniscience (yet anyway) so where is this coming from? Again this never comes up again and Luna keeps acting like she was Cinderella her whole life so like 99% of Deegan lore, it can be safely igored.

Mookie's views of love and sex remind me a lot of Ernest Cline's "porn for nerds" essay which is deeply terrible and no one should read.

Great update, The Little Death. Thanks.

I don't think I ever even noticed Dominic made Luna his assistant, the power dynamic is so explicit and creepy! It's a lot like that anime trope of a pure helpless girl falling into the lap of a 20-something loser's life, except Luna's issues are a little too real and it really highlights how manipulative Dominic looks.

It's easy to miss because after this story arc and maybe the one after it, it isn't really alluded to again. She becomes just his girlfriend/adventuring companion and stops washing his underwear and making his tendies. This, like many other things, is more of an unplanned consequence of the comic becoming more about an itinerant band of murderhobo ttrpg protagonists (so Dominic isn't in his hut so doesn't need Luna to clean it) versus being a conscious choice.

I like how he explicitly says that if she serves him as a domestic drudge that he'll let her sleep there. There's a word for this, and it isn't "assistant."

EDIT: is there a way to edit an image into a post? I can't seem to figure it out.

In large part this is because after this arc, once Dominic and his brother are done running around the area, they go and basically move into his mom’s house.

Japanese Edward is sooo much better anyway. I'm totally in love with that VA's voice.

Oh, I actually know the answer to this one.

First, Gandalf smoked a long pipe like this. Second, Mookie adheres very strongly to the famous Mary Sue Litmus test's tried and true path to writing terrible characters by giving them a bunch of fake flaws that never meaningfully impede them, like how in romcoms the heroine is said to be "clumsy" when she isn't in a scenario where that would do anything to her like a dancer or brain surgeon. Mookie is always very quick to mention Dominic and Luna's fake flaws.

About 3 or 4 years into this comic, I believe someone in Mookie's family experienced a smoking-related cancer scare, so he decide to have Dominic stop smoking tobacco. Shortly after, he had Dominic get his foot disintegrated by ancient Egyptian laser beams and also get a tooth knocked out. He got both of these things fixed by the alterist I've mentioned upthread and they never caused him any significant impediment again. They serve purely as props for Mookie to whip out and say "nuh uh, not a Mary Sue, he's got weaknesses."

After this point, in panels, blurbs, bios, etc, he refers to them as a "gimpy seer and his deformed girlfriend" because Mookie is a great person at all times with no abhorrent views.

It's also always worth noting how minor Luna's 'deformity' is. Especially in-universe.
Like, yeah, IRL tusks on a human being would probably be really offputting. But in fantasy? I mean, like, people IRL fetishize Orcs. And your average female Orc, even when drawn with a traditionally feminine build and without muscles or whatever, still tends to have more non-human aspects than just tusks - green skin if nothing else.
And like this is also a world where Orcs *exist*.

Luna's issue should be less that people see her as hideous and treat her badly accordingly, and more that people associate her minor deformity with Orcish ancestry and because Callan is racist, treat her badly because she's Orc-spawn.

Or he should have given her a more meaningful deformity. Or explored more the idea that her deformity is as minor as it seems to us and that Callan's upper classes are that petty and superficial.

As FuegoFish said in his seminal work on the subject, Luna could just go to the loving alterist and get them replaced with caps if they bother her so much that she tries to kill herself multiple times because of them.

Early on, before Mookie started doing colored Sunday issues, it's clear he hadn't figured out yet that orcs and humans can't interbreed. Later when this is codified, it makes the hicks in Lynn's Brook bullying Luna for being an orc make even less sense, since she is clearly not an orc.

Luna refuses to get her teeth fixed though so Mookie can keep touting it as a "flaw"

yeah, definitely points to a chaotic bent. At best, I'd say NG-CG. But given his somewhat monomaniacal focus on demon-slaying, I'd personally lean to CN. Just fighting evil doesn't make you good, after all.

I mentioned it before, but man, his views on "Lawful Good" and his views on paladins are weird and more based on how a bad DM would apply the rules in a bizarre, haphazard way rather than any actual thought and introspection on what they mean. Like, I understand it sucks to critically examine yourself and your belief structures, but I have a hard time imagining not doing it, ever.

In the original games, Doomguy was put on the outpost as a punishment for beating the poo poo out of his superior who told him to fire on civilians (which is funny given Mookie's dislike of rebels). And in the second game he fights the demons specifically to let the rest of humanity get on the ships that will let them escape Earth which has been overrun, and willingly stays behind thinking he'll die.

After the chapter telling us how compassionate and loving Star Power is she defaults to cracking heads and trusting nobody. But she’s still the pinnacle of a Star Powered Sentinel since she’s always fighting objectively evil people. It’s like he defines heroes by the people they fight rather than the actions they take.

As I said, I think it works in the context of the game because it's a guide for roleplaying, but even there it has its limitations (often quite severe). Applying it outside of there, well... I expect it's a step in the development of a person's understanding the world, ethics, and morality. Most people (I would hope!) who apply the alignment grid to real life, should eventually realise that even 9 options is still limited, and grow beyond that. But... that requires introspection, and at least a bit of critical thinking. It's not a child's view on morality, but it's certainly not a fully developed world-view, if that makes sense? But yeah, ultimately, vv this
