Bruce Sterling talks about a type of cultural temperament that the quotes and images itt made me think of. Here’s a quote of him speaking in 2009. Though this speech is a decade old now, Chairman Bruce is a futurist so he tends to be ahead of the curve. I’ve actually thought of this speech a lot in the last 10 years.quote:In Gothic High-Tech, you’re Steve Jobs. You’ve built an iPhone which is a brilliant technical innovation, but you also had to sneak off to Tennessee to get a liver transplant because you’re dying of something secret and horrible. https://www.wired.com/2011/02/transcript-of-reboot-11-speech-by-bruce-sterling-25-6-2009/ This image of Julian Assange and his legal team was from about a year after this speech and really fit the theme. I often recall this picture when feeling a particular 2010 sense of dread. As time goes on, the sub context here gets stranger as the Assange story continues to be written. Things have certainly changed in a decade, but mostly in the way that everything has just continued to collapse at varying, but ultimately increasing rates. Seemingly inevitable, because there is no one left in charge who remembers work that isn’t grift. Anyway, here’s a more contemporary and explicitly American example of this aesthetic, from Monday at the RNC

quote:Kenosha County encompasses the City of Kenosha along with 11 villages and towns that together create a welcoming sense of place here in southeastern Wisconsin. From the magnificent shore of Lake Michigan on its eastern border to a rural countryside to the west, you’ll find an array of diverse and unique communities to explore.

Ahahahaha Big Mad Drongo posted:I once read a short story where the entire world was engulfed in a permanent, steadily growing grinding noise that ended with the sky cracking and falling apart, revealing machinery where outer space should be. This aesthetic really reminds me of that work, shame I can't remember the title. What was the story

Mark Fisher posted:“The ideological blackmail that has been in place since the original Live Aid concerts in 1985 has insisted that ‘caring individuals’ could end famine directly, without the need for any kind of political solution or systemic reorganization. It is necessary to act straight away, we were told; politics has to be suspended in the name of ethical immediacy. Bono’s Product Red brand wanted to dispense even with the philanthropic intermediary. ‘Philanthropy is like hippy music, holding hands’, Bono proclaimed. ‘Red is more like punk rock, hip hop, this should feel like hard commerce’. The point was not to offer an alternative to capitalism - on the contrary, Product Red’s ‘punk rock’ or ‘hip hop’ character consisted in its ‘realistic’ acceptance that capitalism is the only game in town. No, the aim was only to ensure that some of the proceeds of particular transactions went to good causes. The fantasy being that western consumerism, far from being intrinsically implicated in systemic global inequalities, could itself solve them. All we have to do is buy the right products.” Jacques Derrida posted:“I know a sentence that is still more terrifying, more terribly ambiguous than “I am alone,” and it is, isolated from any other determining context, the sentence that would say to the other: “I am alone with you.” Meditate on the abyss of such a sentence: I am alone with you, with you I am alone, alone in all the world.”
