Ireland first, as is tradition, and then maybe something in Africa, as I didn't do anything with Africa in CKII, so might as well try something brand new!

In my Holy Fury game I started as a count in Norway, and after a few hundred years had 90% of europe, most of africa, and half the middle east before I ran out of steam.

Better players will probably do a lot more in that time. I haven't seen anyone do the complete map, but I'm sure it's feasible if you're crazy.

Wales or Iceland [not a typo] first for me, then definitely Africa. Very keen to see the expanded religion mechanics in practice and make my own faith. My friend and I are going to be on chat and play simultaneous single-player to compare notes before possibly going in with a multiplayer game. I am also going to try for the new fresh Kwisatz Haderach, if it's possible. Never managed the trifecta in 1000+ hours of CK2.

I'd like to say this is the result of stacked Fertility bonuses (that character no doubt has amazing fertility between Whole of Body + Fecund + possible bonuses from religion/dynasty) and the diplomacy perk Sound Foundations for +1 random skill per child, but it would be weird to get as far as Sound Foundations and not take Patriarch so I dunno. Unless he got Scholar/Whole of Body first and didn't go into Diplomacy lifestyle until later. :iiam: The Family tree has other potentials for crazy stats too, with the Befriend scheme and +2 random skills per friend.

It looks like the mug/horn traits can be leveled up, I wonder if those are the results of holding many feasts/hunts? Since 1 candle is the Quick level 1 congenital trait I'd assume the big stack of candles is Genius.

I'm very optimistic about CK3.

This is a real good post, except for the downside that it has increased my hype a lot and I am getting extremely impatient.

The advice for the goon who asked about what makes the game click is good btw. My favourite CK2 games have almost all been stemming from having a plausible objective for my region, religion, etc., and role-playing according to traits and stuff. That's how you lean into the strength of the game, which is telling stories and RPing, and you end up 250 years later with a hatred for some rival dynasty that exceeds any hate you feel IRL and you take increasing drastic and self-sabotaging measures to loving end them until it gets into full Shakespearean Tragedy territory.

The other thing to remember is outside of actually losing your last holding or dying without an heir a defeat is never a game over, and you will have a long long time to claw your way back to your rightful place.

E; One of my favourite playthroughs was me starting as some absolute podunk count in Wales and working to unify Wales, gain influence in Ireland and Scotland, and curtail and roll back English power. By the end we had an empire of England and half of France, and dynasty members on the thrones of Jerusalem, Denmark, three or four Byzzie emperors before getting deposed, and rotating on and off the Spanish throne every few months because Iberia was absolutely unable to stabilise. But all of this was over the course of nearly a millennium, and each stage was a far smaller thing, with almost everything that was outside France and the Isles (and the Crusades) being the result of diplomacy, marriage, plots, etc..

The reason for review embargoes are two-fold, so that we can make a splash when most of them are release at the same time, and more importantly, so that reviewers have time to play the game and aren't stressed into writing a review before they have be able to spend enough time with the game.

The idea that paying influencers to make lifestyle video and then pretend that those are reviews is a biiiiit of a stretch.

Edit: Also did you miss the preview we gave to journalists a few months ago? It's not like we're hiding the game :D

I'm not talking about the actual preview content Paradox have posted on their channel. What I find shady is sending review copies out to everyone and lifting the NDA a week early for a handpicked selection of amateur content creators who are guaranteed to be positive toward the game. It's been a trend with publishers lately, I believe Sony did something similar with the Last of Us 2. I think CK3 looks really good and I'm not worried that Paradox are trying to hide it or anything. I just find "Paradox is sharing the game with their biggest fans first!" to be a naive and overly generous read of what is essentially a publisher trying to turn games media into a casualised marketing force.

Fat Samurai posted:

To be fair a lot of the pun/joke achievements in CK2 were an absolute chore if you actually attempted to complete them. Seems like they've put more thought into the achievements this time around, along with every other aspect of the game.

Spiff highlighted some of the traits that were like, +2 random stat points per friend and +1 random stat point per child so... I guess if you just stack that poo poo with fertility bonuses you can do some impressive stuff.

Feels like this may need to be nerfed unless those stats give diminishing returns.

I know it's definitely been done and is possible, but I'm not sure how to do that besides conquering enough until you're strong enough to fight off everyone vassal above you on your own.

I freely admit I know mostly jack poo poo when it comes to the marriage/inheritance game besides that giving claimants land before you fight for them gives you more land under your control.

Accountability, professional standards and practices, and being paid by a media outlet as opposed to a video games publisher. People on the internet think outlets like IGN etc. are all just paid shills but honestly not really. Especially in the last 10 years or so games journalism has gotten much better and become more of an established profession. Whereas youtube is basically the wild west and is much closer to the games journalism of old that everybody use to complain about and which gave the whole industry a bad reputation.

At some point, faction shenanigans allowed you to kick the ruler of a Kingdom out and take their place if you were popular/powerful enough. That wasn't the only way to get a throne being a vassal by any stretch, but I've always found it the funniest.

The idea of there being ethics in game journalism (or with Youtubers who rely even more on this kind of sponsorship) in 2020 when Rome: Imperator literally just happened a year ago is hilarious.

Most of these CK2 videos are good because they're trying to put a funny spin on things and they're all trying to do old runs in the new system and showing it off. It works because CK2 genuinely looks like a good game and it's very familiar so I did pre-order a while ago. The roleplaying some of the Youtubers are doing is fun but I'm not so naive as to think they wouldn't be trying to do the same if they thought the game was bad. Every video is sponsored which means we're not getting independent reviews, we're getting scripted videos with terms made and possibly censored in some places.

In fact the way PDX is doing this media push should be a warning sign because they're literally paying people directly this time around rather than just giving them the game early and letting them do honest reviews, good or bad.

There's no reason to believe that they were paid on condition that they said good things about it. These people were going to do CK3 videos regardless of whether they get paid, so all this does is direct marketing budget into funding content that I enjoy which sounds great to me.

How is it different from the paradox streams? That is also footage of people being paid to play the game.

Nah man come on, don't fall for this. These videos were totally different from the from the videos they would have made if they'd just been allowed to stream as normal. The only one who talked about mechanics was The Spiffing Brit and exploits are his thing so he probably got a special deal. It's safe to assume exploit that he abused will be fixed before or shortly after release and it was there for amusement, not to show the game as imbalanced.

Trying to pin down what actually happened with that exploit where he was able to farm money/prestige by constantly divorcing and remarrying. I remember alimony being a thing in CK2. Did they get rid of it or did female rulers never have to pay it?
