You know, there could have been a fun little The Yattering and Jack type story here where the evil vine things are trying to corrupt and tempt a completely oblivious Snout and get more and more frustrated as he just goes about his... whatever he's doing. Of course, that'd require a good sense of dark comedy and timing, and I've not really seen any evidence of either.

It would also require Mookie to portray a bad guy as anything other than goofily incompetent and extant only for the good guys to style on, which, with the exception of the evil ink witch (the second evil ink witch) I honestly dont' think he's capable of. If he makes the bad guys into a THREAT then that gets really scary!!

What's really funny about this is that Mookie's probably got a whole headcanon for his own comic that fills in all the logic and personality gaps, like a lot of diehard fans of terrible media.

I thought the same thing with Dave and the Beast back in the day. Eldritch beasts can be funny too, and there's no shortage of good Dave material.

Mookie is also a coward because IIRC over time Luna's tusks become way less prominent and her face doesn't look nearly as hosed up so the whole "external beauty doesn't matter" message gets lost.

"Over time," it happens almost immediately.

Like even by this point they're significantly smaller than they were on her introduction but they're at least still somewhat prominent in this picture, and even slightly so after that.

quote:

But by this point they're barely there, and that's not even too long after that last strip. I know Mookie's art is inconsistent and that their size varies wildly (this seems to be the smallest they're drawn out of this set of strips), but it seems as soon as she leaves her house and becomes Dominic's love interest, they start getting smaller almost immediately.

It's basically like Art3mis' birthmark and body type in Ready Player One. She's not conventionally attractive (because that's what Ernest Cline likes, and he is a special little boy unlike the rest of you gross mainstream porn-lovers) but isn't ashamed of it, so she literally makes her ingame avatar look like her actual self - short and chubby with a birthmark. And Wade is attracted to her anyway because he is also a special little boy unlike the rest of the world that would NEVER find a - gasp - "rubenesque" woman attractive. Nope, never happened before, not even once!

Oh, except for me. I like big women. Along with a lot of other men. I'm not a superhero because of it, and neither are you, Ernest.

And of course in the movie she's super duper thin and very conventionally attractive, lol.

Hm, I only remember two. After she became the symbolic mother for Maltak by donating her womb to restore their lands, she felt an affinity with the orcish people and kept them out of pride, and then after that point as someone else mentioned, we saw a flashback of Croona saying she refused to get her tuskmouth fixed when Luna was in her 20s because she'd refused as a child.

C'mon. She's a girl. There's one reason girls exist to people like Mookie. She was always gonna be the love interest.

As FuegoFish said, since she considers killing herself (twice) over her tuskmouth, busting them out with a rock or file (or going to the dentist) is clearly preferable, but Mookie is dumb.

Yeah I apologize. I feel like we should draw it out the way Mookie intended, to get the full effect. I just wanted it on the record when he was uploading these, so we can acknowledge the true lazyness inherent in this snail's pace of a story.

If I remember, people who did have tusks and fixed it never felt happy and like something was missing. Of course Luna was depressed to the point of wanting to kill herself so it's not even that good a retcon.

Yeah! That one and the other two mentioned by Invisible Clergy were what I vaguely remembered. This one especially doesn't make sense considering the only way she would've known that she'd feel empty without them is by pulling them out first, so there's no reason she wouldn't try.

The fourth retcon is that illusion magic used on tusk mouth is unconvincing, even though over the course of the series illusion magic has no limits whatsoever and Luna is specifically great at illusion magic.

So I guess in this magical fantasy place, the middle finger means the same thing as it does in the United States.

That gesture, its symbolism of an erect penis, and its meaning of "up your rear end", was already referenced to in The Clouds by Aristophanes, so it's been with us for over 24 centuries. From there it spread to the whole Mediterranean and to western cultures in general.

Mookie's work is so eminently dunkable I don't think people need to try this hard. As mentioned it's a very old gesture and it isn't a requirement when writing a thing to invent a new language or insults for a story that is meant to be read and consumed by English speakers. A lot of work is done by context, no one needs to explain what a nerf herder is to understand an insult is being hurled, but it would be way worse if Snout had done a totally invented hand gesture because I'm certain the perfectly reasonable response would be "Mookie, you hack, what the gently caress happened to Snout's hand?" compared to to the short, sharp, shared sign of flipping someone the bird.

Can’t we just mock how weird his hand looks anyways? I can tell he’s flipping the bird but it still looks... off.

In sort of the opposite way from that clearly traced panel with the dynamic pose, which is obviously not Mookie original. Neither are those satyr porn poses, I would bet, and also thanks for that Mookie, you’ve made me resent the mere concept of sexuality now.

The Facebath guy states he only regretted pulling out the one because of seeing Luna be happy with them.

Which AGAIN, he could have either still pulled out the other, or went to a drat alterist and have one put back in, instead of just having one tusk forever.

(And also again that Luna wanted to kill herself over the tusks and only started to accept them because of Dominic's validation)

I actually think we’re supposed to assume both these people are alive? It’s the only reason I can think of for Snout going out of his way to drag both of them along. Unless he just wants to give them a proper burial, but he’s never really come off as that level of compassionate. Course he’s never come off as anything. If muscleman is alive though the one consistent thing about Deeganverse necromancy is that you can have your bare muscles and skeleton exposed to the elements and it not be a big deal.

That makes absolutely no sense, so you're probably right. If they were meant to be alive, Snout should've felt for a pulse or something. Even if he were superstitious, those two looked buried to me.
