They aren't bad movies necessarily, just in the context of what came before. Caring about if the continuity makes any sense, why the scientist loves the snake, etc. is not important. So, it was ok. Lots of worse movies around.

I don't think there was ever deep hate as much as real disappointment and some bafflement that a lot of :smug: types were always trolling about how wrong everyone was to find mediocre movies mediocre. Like these movies came a decade after AvP and two decades after Alien 3 and Resurrection. We're all pretty used to that franchise being poo poo "with a few bright spots" by now.

What is the black goo? It's never explained. Huge plothole in the series imo, but the biggest one is the science team in Prometheus being dumb. It's never explained why they are that stupid. The crew not caring about Shaw or the squid is also a plot hole.

They never clearly explain what it is. It's a big problem for the series canon. It's also disappointing that the origin of the most iconic sci-fi slasher villain ever is never explained. I was extremely disappointed after seeing Prometheus in the theater. It would have been better if, like, Weyland genetically engineered the aliens out of greed, and the movie was about stopping him. Think of a baby between Alien and Avengers, and you have a good movie.

I mean, the black goo can't just be all there is to it. There's nothing.

Nah, they just can't articulate that the third acts in both movies are absolute garage.

These movies are from Ridley Scott, whose last scifi movies were Alien and Bladerunner. That's a tall pedestal to fall...

i read or saw somewhere that the writer of the original alien screenplay hated the fact that they added the 'corporation is trying to capture the alien' plot point - his idea was just the simple 'terrifying mysterious alien attacks crew' stuff. and even though the rest of the movies were all enabled by that choice i agree with him

also alien is the best, aliens is just ok and prometheus is frustrating

vvv i didn't like promethus because all the characters were so stupid and it felt like they were trying to answer questions but it kind of fell apart and got dumb. i don't need to know the backstory of where the aliens came from or whatever, the mysteriousness is what made them scary!

The fact that people treat this banal, on-the-nose scene as iconic is the most damning evidence how badly written that movie was

What is there to explain? It’s like demanding to know what the mutagen that makes the Ninja Turtles, or the T/G-virus in Resident Evil is. It’s a lethal, mutagenic substance, the life that is death, the very essence of the Alien, no further explanation necessary.

You mean the sexy lady named JOI?

Go onto pornhub and type "JOI"

It's "jackoff instructions"

So the lead character of Bladrunner is a pornhub limp dicked robot who needs a disembodied voice to tell him to cum. That's a "good movie" now.

Ok, I will bite. Besides atmosphere, sets, acting, story, etc. things that happen in these movies have WEIGHT to them.

Now with Prometheus, everything that happens is so weightless and unengaging. Two dudes get attacked by a giant worm. Cool, I like to see where this is going- Oh none of the other characters mention them again. Wait, one of them turns into a zombie and attacks ... a bunch of nameless and faceless crew members we never seen before. I'm on the edge of my seat!

The same nerds that were mad that the explanation for the magic island on Lost was that it was a magic island are also made that the explanation for the evil mutagen in Prometheus is that it was an evil mutagen. It's why whenever someone accuses something of having bad writing with zero elaboration or explanation you can pretty much always safely discard their opinions because it usually boils down to their own hang-ups and an inability to form them into words.

Lol it wasn't evil. Talk about "adding your own hangups". The mutagen is life, neither good nor bad, simply a propagation. Look at you, applying human standards like "good and bad". Lol
