On one hand the Mookie that wrote this was still a beginner, so I don't expect genius character writing. On the other you'd think even a lovely writer would notice they wrote a creepy, overbearing rear end in a top hat of a brother in Dominic. If I didn't know better I'd expect Jacob to show up and be a dark mirror to Dominic, too stubborn and controlling to realize that he was hurting Gregory rather than helping him. Dominic realizes this, apologizes, gets a little better. Easy character arc, slam dunk. I don't remember anything close to that happening, plus Dominic's designated Dark Mirror doesn't show up for a few more chapters.

You'd think, but in Mookie's mind it can't be creepy and overbearing if he's right. And Dominic is always right. Even the few times he's wrong he turns out to be right anyway.

The one thing I will say in defense of this storyline is that I have read in one book of medieval history (albeit one that's kind of outdated and honestly a slog) that yeah, it used to be a very widespread pasttime to just publicly mock and shame anyone who was disabled or had a deformity, that was what you did for entertainment. (Obviously it still happens now but you might at least get someone telling you "Hey gently caress you".)

Her bare skin wasn't even the worst part in the end, it was the fact that when you were with her in the helicopter she'd be presenting herself like a dog in heat to the camera the entire time. Every single cutscene with her was like they told the mocap actor she was in a soft core porno.

She's also literally the only female character in the game, and, well, doesn't talk.

Yeah I'd be wary about that, then. The middle ages are one of these eras people love trash talking and that included a lot of complete fabrications aimed at making it more backward and barbaric than it actually was. "The Dark Age" and all that stuff. Yeah well, Mr. Renaissance Man, you think you're all fancy and enlightened because you've read old Greek texts, but guess what? At least medieval people bathed instead of believing that basic hygiene was sinful.

Yet again we have the whole thing with “oh, the heroes wouldn’t really ever use lethal force”. These are people who were geared up to lynch them. Would anyone seriously fault Dominic for at least letting loose with a real warning fireball to show that he isn’t loving around with them? And it would even serve as a bit of a contrast between him and Luna; instead of just ripping off her “scare them with illusions” gimmick entirely, he’s the one who goes straight to actual overwhelming force, which plays into his curmudgeonly personality.
Like we've touched on re: Mookie's conception of bigotry, he only sees "big" acts of bigotry. To him, you're not a "real racist" unless you're doing lynchings or burning crosses in peoples' yards. "Merely" using slurs like the Deeganoids do is A-OK. This leads to really strange plot and character holes where the nameless townspeople of Lynn's Brook pursue Dominic's brother to his cottage to lynch him on Monday, he scares them off with threats of physical violence to punish them, and then on Tuesday, they'll happily file in to ask him to help find their keys as though nothing has happened.

Joe Slowboat posted:

As touched on in some of the older threads, if the narrative actually understood that Dominic was evil, some parts of it might be less stupid. Obviously writing non-humorous fanfic of Deegan is not a useful or pleasant way to spend one's time, but I can see Luna waking up Tuesday and seeing Dominic blithely telling fortunes, asking him why the townsperson he was talking to didn't hold a grudge after they left, and then Dominic rattles some gold coins in his hand and says "I changed his mind," and then smirk, and Luna could learn Lynn's Brook was like a Twilight Zone "It's A Good Life" type situation where Dominic stays in this dismal backwater town specifically because there aren't any other magic users here so he can terrorize and manipulate the population as he wishes.

The comic is so devoid of actual conflict since bullets just bounce off Dominic's chest, you find your mind wandering to such places.

quote:

Less egregiously, that was also a bit of a missed chance to give some early setup and fleshing out for why Jacob became estranged from the rest of them. Hell, maybe even reveal at the climax of one of his arcs that his descent started from a gigantic misunderstanding: he was actually trying to benignly siphon out the corruption on Greg’s leg, and Dominic (or someone else) walked in at the worst possible moment and immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion. And there’s your reason for why Greg still idolizes him, too: he knew the truth, but none of the others believed him when he tried to explain, and by the time he might have been able to more convincingly present his case, it was already too late to make a difference at that point.
That would also kind of give Jacob a reason to exist, but alas, that is not the comic we're reading.

BattleMaster posted:

Even D&D separated dryads from nymphs. Mookie can't clear even the lowest bar.

Of course Deeganworld isn't anything like medieval Europe.
But the Deeganverse isn't based on real medieval history, and Mookie doesn't claim the story to be anchored in any specific region or time period. He just wanted some cartoonish abuse on Greg and Luna so you'd like them rather than do the work of giving them good, useful, or interesting traits.

Right? Like, that could make for some setup where his absolute refusal to ever discuss or talk it out with Greg comes back to bite him in the rear end hard later on down the road. Such as Greg deciding to stop trusting in him because he’s been an overbearing jackass to him, which means he never delivers some vital bit of information to Dominic that could have prevented some major personal tragedy, or defeat, or other setback from happening had he known beforehand.

Bada bing, bada boom, you get a character arc where Dominic is forced to confront the direct consequences of his jackassery, and ostensibly starts trying to become a better person from that point onwards.

Riot Bus
Jan 8, 2020
Yeah, exactly. Having a character act this way isn't a bad writing decision, it's just bad because the conflict here is not really explored properly. In a better story, a character like Dominic struggling with maintaining boundaries with regards to personal drama, given how easy it is for him to discover things, could be really interesting.

Here, though, it's like... even if Dominic was correct and Jacob was 100% evil and 100% irredeemable, using your powers to watch someone have a private conversation and then get mad that they were having said conversation because you 'don't want it under your house' when they weren't even IN your house is just absurd. Yet, it isn't treated that way.

Honestly it makes Greg seem naive for putting up with Dominic as much as he's 'naive' for hoping Jacob is redeemable.

Confirmed Mookie is tracing when he draws his porn pics:

It's so frustrating. He's halfway there. Yes, tracing is fine... As a training tool. Life drawing classes do employ tracing to a degree, but in the context of reverse engineering the figure so that you understand the musculature better with the goal of drawing it WITHOUT tracing.

Mookie says this is good practice. It is - he's getting better... At tracing.

Most fantasy settings just modern western society doing medieval European cosplay, or something closer to medieval European society with some modern anachronisms to make characters and society more palatable and relatable.

Deeganverse is neither of these things. It's a myopic and childish view of High School in vague medieval cosplay except when it can't even be bothered to do that.

That last one is particularly sad. The softest dick imaginable. I know mookie is probably scared that drawing an erection will make him gay or something, but the idea of drawing nymphs and satyrs, you know, the dudes the greeks depicted like this:

https://i.imgur.com/Iexfksc.jpg :nws: obviously

like he's doing. Why draw porn if you're not gonna do it right. Just draw the nymphs if you just want to ogle them. This is just like Snout's dick. Mookie feels that drawing (extremly boring) male nudity justifies his more voyeuristic female nudity.

A challenge to Mookie: draw a dude naked, but not weird monster men, or limp-dicked goat people. Draw an actual naked human man for aethetic reasons the way you so clearly drew the ink witch. Do it, and then maybe I'll believe you that this is for "art's" sake and not because you're horny for black and white titties.

I'm not as critical of him creating his own photo references to trace over, it's not as egregious as tracing over someone's photography or Nighthawks. I think approaching it as an alternative to artists who draw without reference is a little weird. Usually professional artists who use tracing are mainly concerned with getting compositions and proportions down fast, not to make up for a lack of skill when it comes to creating pieces directly from your imagination. Even artists who don't trace are almost certainly referencing photography or models for difficult poses, I think anyone would have a hard time drawing two bodies intertwined without a reference!

I don't even really get his need to bring up that he's tracing, of course we all assumed so since the anatomy wasn't jacked up, but these nymph pieces haven't even looked overly referenced or traced. You don't have to tell us how the sausage is made.
