Update the OP for rules on past/side personas/channels.

Lt. Lizard
Apr 28, 2013
To add to the discussion, I think that the kayfabe should not be sacred in the cases where the other channels are active and the person behind them doesn't seem to care very much about it. If nothing else it gives the option to support the talent you like, without also giving the above discussed cut to companies like CoverCorp which has made a lot of questionable decisions. And not tolerating people going all internet detective and rooting through inactive accounts of performers that do care about not being connected to their previous personas is an obvious sanity check. So yeah, good and necessary rules OP.

In other news, apparently an English/western branch of hololive has been in works for quite a while and there will be a big, official announcement about it in next few days. Link to the interview That will be...uh, interesting.

Compared to how much other sorts of artists get fleeced by their managers 30-40% is quite a bit. In any case, pretty much all the hololive girls should be making good money.

Expect Coco to soon branch into merch (followed by the others).

Adding to the discussion about how much the Hololives are making, I've seen Korone tweet on at least two separate occasions about having to delay or cancel a stream because she had to work late. Could be Hololive-related work of course (signing merch, recording songs, listening to lectures about idol purity, I don't know), but you'd think Yagoo would let his talent go home to do the streams that actually make him money. Makes me think whether maybe she has a regular job to supplement her Hololive income, and if a subscriber powerhouse like Korone can't get by on Hololive money alone, I doubt any of the others can.

When we're those tweets? August 2020 Korone's channel took in around $47k gross in superchats.

It's well known that YouTube takes 30%. The guesses are that Cover Corp take 40-50%, leaving the talents with somewhere between 30-40% of the total amount, but they then also have to pay taxes of the income.

Cover & Ichikara take all SC-money after google-tax, and distribute it to the staff (including voice-actor) in a ratio we don't know. Higuchi Kaede and Coco has talked about this. Hololivers have also mentioned some kind of bonus system.

A few months ago Subaru talked about her weekly schedule, and she didn't make any time to work outside jobs, from how I understood it. On the other hand she's also been living with her family until recently so maybe that affects the situation a bit.

I'd really like a source on the shared distribution (?) of the SC income, got a video or tweet link?

I enjoy watching vtubers' alt/previous accounts. You get to see that pretty much all of them have been around for years, and most toiling in obscurity, and then the shift gaining them 100 times as many viewers. And how the "characters" are for the most part what they've been doing all along. Or that since the niconico streaming community isn't really that large they all knew each other, many previously streamed together, and a lot were likely recruited into becoming a vtuber by their friends. Like, when Miko and Pekora did their 3D stream together it was a pretty nice surprise seeing them perform the same duet they had done 4 years earlier, only now they're idols.

the hololive talent are also paid as employees as they work on other projects behind the scenes. they take around 30-40% of the super chats they receive, youtube takes 30% and 20-30% goes to cover. they get larger percentages of sponsorship and merch sales

the thing i feel bad about is the platform they stream on, youtube is complete rear end. with the amount of viewers they get they shouldnt need to worry about copyright strikes and demonetization

Im guessing that google gives an incentive to hololive's management to keep it in their platform since they get a cut of the money. Theres a reason why a good chunk of streamers prefer twitch over youtube in the states despite the easier integration into youtube VODs if you would stream there. And its because most of their profits go directly to them.

I have a feeling this won't be very successful at all. From the perspective of the typical american, one of the big draws for the JP branch of hololive is the fact that you get to see what's basically "just some (decently cool) Japanese person" interacting with fans. It's not really the virtual aspect that's the draw, it's the fact that the virtual aspect lets the streamers focus on things like their voice and personality quirks, and just kinda take on a more natural personality. That's alright on its own, but it really shines when it lets american fans basically just interact with the japanese. Hell, if hololive streamers weren't so receptive to western (i.e. english-speaking) viewers, I doubt they'd be as popular in the west as they are right now.

There's already a shitload of american streamers as-is. What advantage does vtubing bring for english-speaking american streamers?

nielsm
Jun 1, 2009

A slightly different interaction model between streamer and viewer? Different expectations for "acceptable content", i.e. making art, singing, variety? For women specifically, a chance to break out of any "Gamer Girl" stereotypes.
And the things we talked about before, how being "virtual" allows different/more aspects of your personality to come out

Having a mask of anonymity to work behind really does help to develop your humor and personality, it's simply easier for someone who'd otherwise find it awkward.

As for this mask making someone a loving rear end in a top hat online? For better or worse, all these VTubers work at the mercy of a large depersonal corporation, with PR firms, and they have an incentive to not foster a culture of racial abuse, gendered abuse, and general drama assholishness. There is, at least not yet, any equivalent to IMC, Quartering, Keemstar, being a vile piece of poo poo for clicks and subs. We can only hope that the culture stays that way.

Nah, I think they will do at least as well as Hololive/Niji ID, because presumably they're still going to prefer bilingual people and there will be enough overlap between English/Japanese viewers to carve out a tiny Ayunda Risu sized niche

Thinking about how Nijisanji started an Indian branch and after like 4 months turned it into Nijisanji EN because they had far more English/Japanese viewers than Indian ones

Well, then they’d have to find native English speakers who also speak Japanese at an acceptable enough level to interact with Japanese viewers, if not enough to collaborate with JP or ID. I can’t imagine there’s many of those.

I enjoy watching vtubers play games and be silly but I don't really enjoy them just chatting or whatever.

To that end, Nyanners is my favorite English vtuber. She is balls-to-the-wall ridiculous and plays an idiot but is actually pretty quick witted.

Haruka Karibu has potential but she seems to mostly just chat on her twitch.

This is my thinking too. I knew so many Weeb girls in college a decade ago who have the same 3 "interests" listed that every vtuber lists: anime, video games, voice acting. The numbers now are probably through the roof.

Physical appearance doesn't matter and the cost of entry as a vtuber is super low too, so the amount of vtubers is going to continue to explode for quite some time I think.

Nisei like Coco will probably be fine (though there aren’t a whole lot of nisei I think), but random American nerds still have to pass that Japanese proficiency barrier. Theoretically possible - hell, I’d jump at the chance to practice it even if I make a total rear end of myself - but I’m willing to bet Cover Corp will expect a high base proficiency despite ID. Maybe they won’t, I guess.

Like I’m imagining how I’d do as an English-Spanish 2nd-gen, and god that gives me anxiety. I’m already self-conscious about losing a lot of my Spanish over the years.
