So company policy forced me onto 10.15.6. This has hosed the displaylink driver into being unable to drive the HDMI port on my dock at anything other than landscape. I need two portrait displays for my setup. Does anyone have thoughts/ideas? This has really messed with my workflow this last week.

Didja try downloading the latest DisplayLink Manager, v1.1, that was released on 8/20 to be compatible with Big Sur beta and 10.15?

Welp, 2020 iMacs are being reported to have a GPU glitch that results in random lines across the screen.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251730390

Hopefully it's a driver issue and not a fault with the GPU itself..

You’ll need to do the trade in as its own separate transaction, receive an Apple gift card/balance, and then you can apply that balance to anything they sell like it was any other kind of store credit.

A couple of years ago, I traded in an old iPhone, got $150 for it, and used the balance to buy some Watch straps.

Going ahead with this scheme, thanks for alerting me to that possibility.

For some reason, they're offering £145 as the trade in value when I go via this route, as opposed to £125 if I try it against a new device. Profit?

Thinking I'll also sit on this for a while once I've got my credit until the September/October event happens. I don't think there's a very high chance of an A14 mini coming out alongside what seems to be an already fully packed reveal roster if the rumours are to be believed, but I don't have an urgent need of an iPad, and maybe I'll be tempted by one of the other offerings...

Be advised that sticking with Mojave doesn't get you access to the latest versions of certain Apple apps (iMovie, for one) that now require Catalina.

At least the low bar for iWork (Keynote, Pages, Numbers) is still Mojave..

Catalina, for all intents and purposes, is a trashfire surrounded by raw sewage, at least as far as stability goes IMHO.

One other thing to consider is whether you still have any 32-bit applications because Catalina is 64-bit only.

My Catalina install actually hasn’t been too bad but we’ve had an absolute mountain of problems with it in general at work. I’m admittedly running it on a 2018 MBP rather than one of the new 16” ones and most of the people at work who had issues have 2020 MBPs so I halfway wonder if it isn’t related to hardware as well.

From the testing we’ve done on Big Sur at work it’s shaping up to be a lot better already so here’s hoping it ends up that way.

I'm thinking of getting a PC for gaming. Is there a simple way of combining that with the 2013 iMac I already have? Boot Camp isn't really an alternative because there's not enough juice in the iMac itself. Can I easily use the iMac as an external monitor for the PC? Or is the best (and, alas, the most expensive) solution to get both a PC and a monitor?

What kind of iMac? Target Display Mode hasn’t been a thing since they switched to retina displays.

Otherwise, yeah- your best bet is a separate monitor- or you can stream into your Mac, either something remote like GeForce Now or something that lets you stream in from your own PC (Steam link? That still a thing? I’m way out of the Steam loop)

Thinking about switching from a RMBP to a 2020 iMac since I'm tired of CPU throttling, constant very high fan noise, and Bluetooth problems. I haven't bought a desktop Mac in over a decade, though, and was curious if anyone here had bought the i9 variant.

I'd rather not buy a 12 core Mac Pro since it's roughly 2x the cost of an i9 iMac for similar CPU performance, but given that Mac Pro towers have historically held their value so well is there a strong case to be made for buying one? The only real argument I can see for it is the upgradeable GPU, but I don't game and I'm not a video editor.

I'm planning on VESA mounting the iMac. Is it worth getting the VESA version, or is the resale generally way worse for those (and instead I should get a fugly adapter)?

How bad is the fan noise on the 2020 i9 5700 (XT or non-XT) model? And how bad is CPU throttling under sustained load? Since no tech reviewers know how to use anything other than their web browser and Geekbench I basically can't find anything about this outside of a handful of forums, and the fan noise reports there are all over the place.

I don't care how many people I probably infected with COVID-19 while refusing to wear a mask, my comfort is far more important than the health and safety of everyone around me!

A 2012 is basically obsolete, especially in single core performance

There are a few cases where it could hang with a newer Mac as long as it’s only 6 cores.

A little disrespect and rudeness can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day
So I've got an early 2013 MBPr that I'm getting rid of, but it has a completely busted display. I can't see anything on the screen except for a few flickers of light. I have it setup at the moment so it'll boot to a monitor. I just went to erase the hdd and doing the whole "hold command+R" thing my computer booted to the main display, not the monitor. I can't see anything and I'm not sure what to do. Is there any way I can reformat the hdd without a working display? I.e. have command+r boot to the monitor? I don't have a separate keyboard so I have to keep the lid open. I can get my hands on a keyboard relatively easy if that helps.

But this makes me wonder, once I get through the reformatting I think I'll need to reinstall the OS, and would my computer know to boot to the display? Or would it default back to the display and would I lose the bluetooth connection to the keyboard? Any tips would be helpful.

Unless there's some nifty PCIe card with Mac support that you want to get later, just get the iMac. At this point it's kinda hard to make a case for a huge single CPU (but multicore) Mac desktop tower machine other than to make Tim Apple richer.

If you plan on also having a PC, a high end iMac with bootcamp is probably one of the best options you’re gonna have unless you want two different displays. I imagine they’ll be popular for a bit, at least five years. A lot of people won’t be ready to switch, or won’t trust the new hardware, or have a thing about “first gen” so 2023 is the earliest we’ll start seeing real mainstreaming of Apple Silicon

If you can get your hands on another Mac and the right cables, you might want to try booting it in Target Disk Mode: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/transfer-files-mac-computers-target-disk-mode-mchlp1443/mac

Then you could wipe the disk from Disk Utility on the host Mac. I wouldn’t worry about reinstalling macOS, but I think you could do it with the host Mac in Recovery Mode.

it’s a long shot, but maybe try hitting command+F1 when your monitor is plugged in and you’re at recovery mode? that’s the “mirror display” key command. depends if it recognizes the screen or not and how much of the os they put into recovery mode

I do have another Mac. So this would allow me to connect my busted computer to my new Mac and wipe the disk and everything from the new one? I'll look into it. My other thought is taking it to an Apple store and seeing if it's something they do.

I tried this but it doesn't recognize the function. The monitor turns on with the screen but stays blank.

Is there any other way to wipe the computer without going into recovery mode? And without manually deleting everything...

EDIT: I was able to blindly grab the disk utility window and drag it to the external monitor, which surprisingly worked. I think I should be in business.

I believe this is correct. The 2013 iMac can only act as an external display through thunderbolt 2 specifically, meaning it only really works as a display for other macs.

Thunderbolt 2 is the same size as mini display port so it’s really easy to try and use a mini display port cable from a windows machine but it won’t work since it’s technically not thunderbolt 2

You can rig TB output for a PC with the $50-100 TB cards, although might be TB3 only and need another adapter on top of that, and hope it all works right.

Another option might be the newer low latency USB 3 capture cards, depending on type of the games you play and tolerance for lag, I think the Elgato one was like 2 frames off in a video I saw. There’s random/no name ones too for ~$50 but no clue if they're all the same or performance outside of a few anecdotal forum posts.

(There’s also $10-20 USB 2 ones that have gotten prominent recently, but the lag was just a bit too much for me, kinda like a really laggy TV)

Well if the TB one works it’s the same as a regular TB display output. I just know the trick has been used to get TB video output from eGPU boxes, using either a dual slot box or some power->PCIe slot adapter to power the TB card. Basically run DP from the GPU to the card's passthrough/mux and it outputs TB.

USB can really vary cause stuff running on the Mac can potentially cause hiccups or whatever random software stuff affecting things.
