Had a slight bit of sad schaden today.
A couple of weeks ago I was walking past a subway station when I noticed my oldest nephew and som other guys decked out in orange shirts and shilling for some power company. I thought about going over and saying hi but he was in the middle of talking to some lady so i dropped it and went on my way.
Then lo and behold, yesterday my mom gets a text message from the same power company thanking her for switching to their service. She had not even heard about them so this was clearly a great mystery.
Today she calls them up and explains the situation. After looking up my nephews name the guy could tell her that it wasn't him that had signed her up but another guy on his team. This clearly pissed him off and he promised to take it further up in the company. Canceling the new subscription was also not a problem.
We contemplated telling my brother, but decided against it since we don't need any family drama. It's enough that he'll almost certainly get shitcanned. I'm frankly just shocked that he would try to pull such a lovely scheme on his own family since he's always been a decent kid.

At my farm, we burned non-recyclables in a barrel. 13yo friend wanted to play with some bug spray in the fire. Using the pump spray made fun fireballs, but my friend decided to unscrew the cap and pour it in. Queue a mini version of this, with my friend slinging the bottle away from him, leaving a trail of fire that quickly caught on the dried Texas grass.

I jumped the fence to get a nearby hose, my dad got a shovel, and we stopped it just a couple feet from nearby trees and a cow fence :v:

Con artists have known since time immemorial that the bolder the lie, the less likely it is to be questioned.

Not sure where she got caught, but it sounds like someone was going to publicly call her on this, so she tried to get ahead of it by admitting it herself. By her own admission, she claimed a few different backgrounds, so I'm gonna guess that she told different lies to different people, or told people one thing in person and then wrote a different lie in a book or article, and that led to people starting to ask questions she couldn't answer.

As for getting away with it, well... if someone shows up new to a place and claims an identity, unless you know them from before or otherwise meet someone who did, even if you might think they're not who they claim, what proof would you have? As long as nothing connects the new and old lives, either in person or on social media, that's a hell of a thing to prove.
