chamois posted:I am curious, which track would you prefer to have an eliminator on? I am of course concerned for the safety of the drivers, but this was relatively tame compared to other superspeedway races this season. I honestly think that having a race with direct championship implications at a track where anything can happen is exciting, and good for the health of the sport overall. Imagine if Bubba or Reddick had won and snuck into the playoffs. It would be a top 5 sports moment in any year. You're not wrong, and I think I took my position to an extreme logical conclusion. I do find that the short track racing has been some of the most entertaining this year, though. Some of the cookie cutter tracks are bad racing, but they're also representative.

Well that was another disappointing Xfinity finish. Hamlin just couldn't hold it together and ruined both his and Chastain's chance at the win there at the end. Jones is cool tho.

He also won the all star race. He could've won tonight if Truex hadn't taken them both out. The gulf between him and the top drivers isn't as big as you'd think and if he could chain together 3 or 4 good races he'd be right there with harvick. If you don't like him that's one thing but he's not a tier 2 driver by any measure.

elliott's having a fine year but harvick is just on another level in 2020, anyone but hamlin beating him at phoenix is going to be yet another joke title

I agree the title becomes meaningless when a guy can win 4 times more than everyone else and still somehow not win the championship. To beat harvick a driver would have to win a ton in the final stretch and thus have a competitive win total but there's no way Harvick is done winning.

This will kill Indycar's chances of ever racing on a 2 mile oval, possibly ever again depending on what happens with Michigan. Anyways, this is great. What a bold idea out of NASCAR. They're going to make a super unique race track that takes the long straights of Martinsville and the high banks of Bristol and have it smack dab in the middle of a major market. I'd go to the first race in a heartbeat. I also wonder what Irwindale thinks about this turn of events. Having two major paved half-mile tracks 35 miles apart might finally get it to actually close down.

ah those things that LA famously didnt abandon and still loves, short tracks. alright im headed out to Exposition Park, then Legion Ascot, then South Ascot, then Ascot Park, then Beverly Hills Speedway, then the Culver City Speedway, then Gilmore Stadium, then Gardena Speedway, then Carrell Speedway, then the literally 100 other tracks that used to be in LA but closed. as a side note, im real jealous of when my dad talks about the 60s in LA, the entire city was auto racing obsessed. "Where They Raced" is a fun little book to read about it (that was literally someones graduate thesis so it isnt really a book per se)

What are some of the hilights of Fontana? Were there some especially notable CART races there or something? I cant remember a single thing about Fontana except getting into an argument with a goon itt about if a D oval is a cookie cutter oval or not.

Cygni posted:tbh this is extremely sad to me I'm most upset over Indycar losing a Triple Crown-type race track and potential race. In a not-too-alternate universe, Penske still owns the track after buying Indycar, and we get a 500 mile season finale every year. My next level of upsetness is how this is going to screw over Irwindale, because it will one way or the other. Lots of good memories with Indycar racing there but I think this will be a net positive for the track and NASCAR. After seeing the Cup race in Fontana last year I swore I would never go there again. But put a Cup short track in my backyard? Sign me the gently caress up.

Just in general: Big beautiful facility with high speeds, wide turns, and huge full grandstands at its peak Replaced by a tiny, obviously going to fail bizarre-o short track created in last gasp effort to keep from closing down. All this in the countries 2nd most populated region, the place a huge amount of racing history in the US came from, where a lot of the parts suppliers and shops still are, where a lot of the drivers came from, etc. Its just a sad microcosm of racings death in the US, and that is sad because i like racing.

The land was basically considered unusable because of the decades of dumping slag and chemicals all over the place. Part of the deal with the EPA to build the track was that they would essentially plastic over the entire yard to prevent all the horrible poo poo in the ground from leeching up, then dump a comical amount of dirt on top of it all. Normally I would say theres no way the EPA would let you build commercial or residential stuff on that site, but with now-a-days EPA, I'm pretty sure nobody would give a gently caress as long as you bribed the right folks.
