went to go watch The Boys on Prime, and saw it's being released weekly (3 eps only so far - but thats for another thread  ) so instead watched The MercenaryAfter having just watched Debt Collector 2, I wasn't really feeling Louis Mandylor as a "bad-rear end", tough, yes, but after this - man, he plays a great bad-rear end mother fucker. It has everything an action movie should have, including having a priest declare you a weapon of god and go loving kill everyone and a training montage. It has some plot holes to keep it entertaining, and some fights just aren't long enough with some of the main bad guys, but there are a lot of them so to be expected, you still get like a 20 minute "climax zone" leading up to the end. 3.5/5 Also directed by Jesse V. Johnson, who now I'm a huge fan of. It's really cool that all these Stunt guys turned out to be amazing directors, seems to get to know a lot about the shooting the process B-Rock452 posted:

There's also The Night Comes for Us and Headshot with Iko Uwais if you wanna go all out crazy - highly recommend the former if you're in that mood - from the same producers/directors/whatever of the raid films if I remember right. I would also recommend the Keanu directed/starring: The Man of Tai Chi. It's got a cool 80's/90's feel to it. It's got some amazing fight scenes throughout and the story is good enough. Keep an eye out for Tiger Chen early on in John Wick 3. I personally thought he could have had a bigger role but at least he got a memorable moment.

I like headshot a little better than The Night Comes for Us, I think the gore is a little too much but it still has some amazing fight scenes. Watched Kiss of the Dragon for the first time in like 15 years last night, good action but pretty misogynistic which made sense when I saw Luc Besson wrote it. If you haven't yet, check out Warrior on Cinemax. I can't figure out how Cinemax tapped directly into my brain because combining the producer of Banshee, director of Fast 5 and the writings of Bruce Lee is pretty my my dream action fantasy.

I just noticed that Isaac Florentine directed a movie in 2017 called Acts of Vengeance starring Antonio Banderas and Karl Urban. Is it any good? I'm always up for Karl Urban doing cool things.

l feel like Adkins is a pretty crucial ingredient to a Florentine action movie though. I don't know that a regular actor is going to be able to make the action good enough for me to want to spend my time on watching it.

And they're the 5th and 6th direct to video entries in a series that didn't even produce an especially good original film and only existed to put Van Damme and Lundgren in the one movie.

Speaking of Dolph lundgren, the "have we gone through this all before?"speech, at the end of universal soldier regeneration shows that the man has got some pretty decent acting chops. I've really come to appreciate him a lot more, and I'm looking forward to the podcast with Adkins.

Yea with Lundgren you get the feeling that we really only scratched the surface of what his career could've been. He had a few high profile failures that kinda cut off his opportunities but also he's always been more than just an actor so he typically has other stuff going on in his life. But I think he very easily could've been on the same level as a Stallone if a few situations break differently for him.

I saw the first Universal Soldier forever ago and have completely forgotten everything about it. I've seen the last two and they were fantastic. Does the first hold up at all and are the sequels any good or not? I'm feeling the need to watch some retro stuff.

The first Universal Soldier is a pretty standard 80s/90s action flick, I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it, but it is enjoyable if you like that kind of thing. The Hyams Universal Soldiers are so different in quality it is a miracle. The other earlier sequels are complete garbage. Speaking of Lundgren, one of my favorites which hasn't been mentioned is Command Performance, which is Die Hard at a rock concert (that is what it says on the cover), with a middle aged Dolph playing a drummer in a lovely metal band. It's not a great movie, but it is good, and will probably satisfy anyone with nostalgia for 80s movies with corny quips. The best line is "Dying is easy, Rock and Roll is hard." also he kills a guy with an electric guitar. Not by hitting him with it, by playing it loud. Continuing with daily 2020 action movies until I'm caught up, here's four more. Superman: Red Son (2020) - 1.5/5 "Even Superman isn't powerful enough to make socialism work" is exactly the kind of dogshit idea you'd expect to get greenlit in 2020 and it was exactly what I was not interested in seeing. Plus every comic story is about comic book references fighting, so there were a lot of reminders in here of why my interest in this kind of thing has fallen off sharply in recent years. Force of Nature (2020) - 2.5/5 A medium-budget Die Hard in a Puerto Rico apartment complex during a hurricane that provides above-average entertainment value. The plot of the movie is completely insane but it doesn't matter much because it's a means to provide a bunch of well-written entertaining scenes of the different characters interacting. Action is somewhat sparse but fairly well done. Emile Hirsch is very good and Mel Gibson has still got it. As far as unheralded action releases go, I think I can put this down as an overlooked gem far better than most of its 2020 contemporaries. Project Power (2020) - 2/5 Too long and the plot is a mess. Not offensively bad or unwatchable, but totally forgettable. Doesn't deliver enough action if it's asking you to sit for two hours watching it, especially because a lot of the action happens in dark or obscured sequences. Overall, I'm unable to figure out what the goal here was. Greyhound (2020) - 3.5/5 this movie made me cry so im a Dad now. i dont make the rules

I gave Universal Solider: Regeneration a spin last night and was thrilled and chilled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_XQtz3hdzo From this forum I heard that the most recent Universal Solider (Day of Reckoning) was a confirmed banger so I took a chance and was floored by the magic of Scott Adkins. Despite the previous entry having the same director, I wrote it off for years while I pretended to live my life. Last night changed all of that. The story is the same, America participated in some light necromancy and spawned a race of super-solider. They are perfect weapons, totally loyal and impervious to most damage. Enter Andrei Arlovski, a UFC proven fighter. I was a fan of the fighter before he entered the big screen and the man is an absolute savage. Hiring real fighters to do their own stunts is the most natural move in the world, what happened with Ronda Rousey is an isolated case that shouldn't spoil the barrel. Every second Arlovski is on the screen there was a big stupid grin of my face. While not as technically impressive as The Raid, Regeneration takes copious notes from the series and we are treated with some delicious, spectacular long takes with steady-cam action. The introduction car-heist is something taken straight from a Nolan film, the action slaps and we are essentially treated to an adult version of G.I. Joe with all the straight-faced absurdity that it entails. For being a very entertaining sleeper hit in a sea of mediocrity, I award US: Regeneration the coveted Walrus Certified Good Time. I also really really really liked Wu Assassins - maybe it's because I'm the biggest Iko Uwais mark - but that show kicked so much rear end I have to re-watch it just to remember how good it is. It was just announced that there won't be a season 2 BUT they're turning it into a movie series quote:"I can't be a part of it because I'm committed to another series," he said. "But I think that's what they're going to do. They're going to do two movies of the week where Iko [Uwais]'s character moves from Thailand and South Africa. But COVID hit.

Adkins' Art of Action with Dolph Lundgren is up, and I can't say it's particularly great. The one with Cynthia Rothrock was excellent -- she has so much charm and enthusiasm and she's eager to enhance the fight scene commentary with her memory of the events leading up to and following, so you really feel like she's bringing something to the viewing of the movie (plus she hits like a motherfucker in her early Hong Kong days). With Dolph, though, he's just so detached and laconic and really isn't a good storyteller, so he ends up just kind of repeating what Adkins is saying, with only minor variations. I wanted him to get really excited during some of the viewings, but even during the US:R and US:DOR segments, he's pretty much checked out. Too bad. I really think Dolph in his movies is a charismatic slab of beef, who's really trying to do something with the role; Dolph in real life seems to be a quiet dude who isn't really good at telling stories. Sad to hear about his abusive Dad, though

Yea I enjoyed Dolf and Scott shooting the poo poo but it wasn't as informative as some of the other episodes. I guess Dolf just doesn't quite have that extensive martial arts film resume that a lot of the other guests have, so there's less to talk about.

I guess there was just something in the water. Statham is clearly the better action star, but Owen does a fair job of playing a trigger man. While Crank is better, I feel like Shoot Em Up is more watchable than Crank 2. Crank 2 leans too far into straight up gross out poo poo and doesn't really have anything new to offer over 1.

what's interesting about shoot em up is that all the action is shot incredibly fast, but all the fight scenes are easily comprehensible—much more so than virtually any hollywood action movie from that era. someone in the production of that movie knew what they were doing.

Also true. The geography sometimes gets a little lost, but the camerawork isn't nauseating. I find it actually takes a little time to get into how Crank, et al, are shot. That shaky, almost handicam footage. I also think they have a bit of fun with the "baby" in SeU. At many points in the movie, it's clearly a doll, to the point were you can just start assuming it's a doll the entire time....then it is! I honestly don't know what an action fan could dislike about it other than Owen, and god knows, we've given plenty of bland actors a pass in this genre.
