I don't know if the performance/quality have improved in general, but apparently it includes a new DLSS profile tuned for 8K displays

The previous DLSS Performance mode is a 4x scale (i.e. upscales 4k to 8k) but this new one is a 9x scale (i.e. 1440p to 8k)

It remains to be seen how the quality holds up with such an extreme amount of upscaling

Ugh, my system meets the minimum setting requirements but I'm crashing so hard that I can't get all the way through the cutscene section in the beginning where I'm escorting the necrotizing body out to an incinerator. (The second major cutscene, the one after I met Fragile and reached the first city.) I have an Intel i7 at 4GHz, 16 GB of RAM, and a GeForce 1060 3GB with freshly updated drivers. What is my crash source here?

Do you have DLSS enabled in the graphics options? I don't remember if it'll let you enable the RTX features without an RTX card, but if so, turn it off as it'll just tank your performance. Does it give you an error when it crashes or does it just black screen back to desktop?

I didn't turn DLSS on and it told me that because I don't meet the recommended specs everything was turned to the min. It actually forced a reset from fullscreen to windowed (and at a smaller resolution so I was being given the game with black borders) every time I opened it. It gave me an error with a lot of very technical information including references to my graphics card.

Replaying on PS4 while offline out of curiousity. My profile doesn't have its password so I'll never have an online thingie. Excited to take 30 hours to build a single road, delusionally

One replay thought I had is that it seems like an odd decision to have the opening mission be an incinerator one with the janky body mechanics. I imagine a lot of people just said nope and stopped playing there.

If the error message says "Device removed error" or similar somewhere, it means your graphics card got overloaded and disconnected. Are you running an overclock on it? I assume no, but sometimes cards come 'factory overclocked' by the manufacturer and the only way to know is to look it up on their website. Either way this shouldn't be happening, even a 1060 should be able to get at least 60 fps at 1080p, the game is optimized like a dream (in spite of some pretty minor technical issues).

i have a 1060 6GB and had horrific performance issues with this game. people keep parroting the "optimized like a dream" thing, but if it doesn't work well for you, it probably just won't. i still got to the ending, and it was mostly okay, but it was loving rough sometimes and no messing with settings and configs seemed to do much.

don't get me wrong, i loved the game and really want to replay it on a system it actually works on, but the port is kinda not great if you aren't one of the people it just works for out of the box

I wonder if it's something about the 1060, then. The repeated crashing makes no sense, but I had the same issue with Horizon Zero Dawn until their last update fixed it. I refunded Death Stranding for now, and I'll wait until I upgrade my card to try again with it. Maybe a 2060 or 2070 after the 30-series cards hits, or Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals. The wait sucks, but what else is there?

Yeah, it's probably the 1060 3GB. I also had an MSI 1060 3GB and heaps of crashing, and after a lot of looking at hardware sensors, the only thing that seemed to consistently be causing it was the lack of VRAM on that card. The game constantly wants about 5 GB of stuff in VRAM, but because there isn't enough on the card it ended up swapping stuff out to shared RAM non-stop, which caused CONSTANT stuttering while running around, and if it decided to spike up over about 2.85GB of VRAM usage it would crash more often than not. The cutscenes definitely made it happen more often too, the intro sequence was made a lot less enjoyable by having to restart the game like 5 times before I could get through each cutscene without a crash, though it was also the worst I saw the crashing get. It was a lot less frequent after I got to actually go start walking, but still bad enough that I had to stop eventually and wait for the courier IRL because it was detracting from the game so much.

My personal solution was, unfortunately, buying a 1660 Super 6GB, but now it runs at mostly 50+ FPS (barring a couple of areas) even with a 7 year old AMD FX-8300 CPU. I've had probably 3 crashes since the upgrade, and all were signs that I had been playing for like 15 hours straight and should probably go to bed.

Sucks, and good chance you're in a similar boat, but at least the game is dope as hell. I dunno if this will be the case for you, but I'm definitely getting my $99 + $450 AUD worth and loving it, sunk cost fallacy be damned :v:

As much as I know PC gaming allows for amazing FPS numbers, customization, mods, and other great stuff, I still stick with consoles, just because I want to put in the game and have it work.

I noticed some folks have holograms that wave or dance near structures they build, and I thought that was pretty cool. Then, I noticed one of the Watcher machines from Horizon: Zero Dawn, and I had a brief moment where I got confused as to what game I was playing.

At some point, maybe even from the beginning, you can add a holo or music to a structure in the customization menu at the structure. You can also change them on other people’s structures so if there’s an annoying one you see all the time you can replace it. You get more holos by leveling up shelters and DCs and I think music unlocks mostly through story though you get some tracks from shelters too.

Beat the game last night and I'm still figuring out if I really liked the game or not. It had awesome moments, the world building is awesome, but... I dunno, almost everything just fell flat for me. I don't give a poo poo about any of the characters, all the deliveries felt boring, the game seriously plateaued a few missions after you make it out West, and honestly the gameplay was just.. mediocre.

I don't regret playing it at all it was certainly an experience, but having just beat it and reading about a bunch of the stuff I missed out, I really feel no compulsion to pick the game back up. I'm gonna take a break from it for awhile and see if the urge comes back, but I just don't think it will. I'm kinda bummed cause MGSV was so fuckin fun to gently caress around in once you beat the game, but DS does not have me in that same mindset at all.

When it comes to dealing with BTs (I don't even know what BT stands for yet, maybe it's in one of the interview logs), my normal tactic is to crouch and try to skirt around and between them while quickly moving through the area. If I get surprised by one up close, or I get backed into a dead end, I'll throw a Hemetic Grenade, and scuttle away. I have progressed to a point where I have a couple more options for dealing with BTs, a bola gun, and an anti-BT gun. Are either of those worth hauling around? I know bola guns are also useful against MULEs, but I've been able to handle them without so far.

The Anti-BT Handgun is awesome, despite the name it's not a pistol. It's a charge-shot railgun. If you charge up enough you can kill any BT in one shot, and it pierces too so you can wiggle Sam around until multiples are lined up in your sights.

edit: It's an automatic stagger on bosses if you hit them in their gold head skull thing too, but if you're not playing on Hard or above you probably don't need to worry about that.

I'm assuming the game was commercially succesful enough that Kojima will be handed another pile of money for his next project. I cannot wait to see what the next project is. Should I go back and play some of the older MG games in the meantime? I've only played 5 (shameful I know).

I love Metal Gear so I’m always going to say yes but I’m also very biased. If you have access to a PS3 you can play almost everything in the series, barring the GBA and PSP exclusive games. MGS3 is probably the best of the earlier ones to start with; make sure you get the PS2 Subsistence version or PS3 HD remaster since the initial PS2 release has a somewhat fixed camera that can be extremely frustrating at times.

It could've flopped hard and people would still shower Kojima with money at this point. The MGS games (PS1 onwards) are definitely worth playing if you liked Death Stranding. They're genuinely good, polished games though your appreciation of the story may vary. MGS3 is considered one of the best PS2 games of all time for good reason. Portable Ops (the PSP one) you can skip, but Peace Walker is great (the HD version especially) and it's kind of a proto-MGS5.

Even aside form all that, you should play Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Though Kojima only had a slight involvement in it, it's an incredibly fun game.

I don't mind them in the game as-is but I wish they'd ditched them aside from a few encounters in favor of focusing on the traversal being the main "antagonist" because they had it figured out so drat well already.

The MGS HD collection (MGS2, 3 and Peace Walker) is available on Xbox too. MGS1 is PS1 exclusive (there's a PC port but it's rubbish and a remake on the Gamecube that turned it into a ludicrous action movie) and pretty of-its-time gameplay-wise but you kind of need to know what goes on in it to appreciate MGS2. MGS4 is PS3-only though it might be on Playstation Now on the PS4/PS5 but like MGS1, you could just watch a good Let's Play of it or something to get the basic gist before moving on to Peace Walker. MGS3 and Peace Walker are must-play games no matter what, I think.
