Even aside form all that, you should play Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Though Kojima only had a slight involvement in it, it's an incredibly fun game.

I'm def still processing everything but I think I liked Heartman the best out of all the characters. Really intriguing backstory, like really the only one I found believable and actually human, and funny but not dumb-funny interactions.

I'm not here to fuck spiders!

They're all classics but the gameplay is pretty different. MGSV was the only one that had an open world setting, everything else is a linear structure or episodic missions. As with any older game, expect to miss some of the QOL design decisions modern games have standardized to be missing.

That said they all have Kojima's incredible attention to detail and bizarre ideas. MGS3 is one of my GOAT and it includes enemy soldiers who: are a ghost, an old man who used photosynthesis to survive, a guy full of bees? It gets wacky as hell but there's also a poignant story in the middle of all the insanity.

I should give MGS3 a replay at some point, it wasn't my favourite when it came out but I think I'd appreciate it more now.

Thanks for the breakdown of the MGS must plays, that's very helpful. I'm kinda sad I can'y just play on my PC with a controller :ohdear:

Back to Death Stranding: I cannot loving believe Giant Bomb gave this game two stars. Even if you think the writing was half-baked, how often does a triple-A title come out that is this out-there? It's just so bold for Kojima to spend tens of millions of dollars making the most advanced walking sim ever conceived. If that poo poo doesn't warm your heart and soul I just don't know what you want from video games.

The MGS HD collection (MGS2, 3 and Peace Walker) is available on Xbox too. MGS1 is PS1 exclusive (there's a PC port but it's rubbish and a remake on the Gamecube that turned it into a ludicrous action movie) and pretty of-its-time gameplay-wise but you kind of need to know what goes on in it to appreciate MGS2. MGS4 is PS3-only though it might be on Playstation Now on the PS4/PS5 but like MGS1, you could just watch a good Let's Play of it or something to get the basic gist before moving on to Peace Walker. MGS3 and Peace Walker are must-play games no matter what, I think.

PS Now also lets you play on PC since it's just a streaming thing and has MGS4 and the HD Collection last time I used it about 9 months ago. Warning that it's bandwidth intensive and just won't let you use it if you don't have the connection.

I liked Survive. A lot of the criticisms were kinda hackneyed stuff like "it only lets you have one save" which I never saw pop up for DS. It shared the fun gameplay loop and had really good online multiplayer.

They were definitely spooky and some moments were intense but eventually it was like they were more of an inconvenience than a threat which they were constantly portrayed to be. It's like, dude, this zone is cool, just let me walk around and explore but NOPE, sneak or do a lame (albeit visually spectacular) boss fight to have a moment to freely explore the place.

Oh that's right. So that would be the best bet for our curious compatriate here. PS Now is what? 13 bucks a month? Could squeeze at least 2 and 3 in there, probably 4 too. Peace Walker if you only play for the story but why would you do that instead of sinking dozens of hours into it?

I just finished a mission where I had to transport some unusual cargo: A living person. I carried the artist girl to her boyfriend the Junk Dealer for a happy reunion, yaaaay. I first wondered "Why the hell am I carrying this grown rear end adult on my back, instead of her riding on my trike, or walking beside me?" Then I realized that if I didn't carry her, it would have been a lovely escort mission through enemy territory, which is never fun ever. So shlepping her rear end over the hill, much simpler.

For what it's worth, I also enjoyed Metal Gear Survive. Me and my friends had a blast with the online multiplayer. By the end it's the same diminishing returns grindfest leveling system that Destiny and its ilk offer, but it's also one of the most successful game formulas at the moment for a reason so . That said, gently caress the haters, shooting crystal zombies in the neck point blank with a shotgun owns.

I never had much respect for YouTuber gaming personalities, but the universal vitriol for Survive was really something else. I watched a vid by that Jimquisition guy a couple years back: one of the the highlights was him stabbing a enemy through a barricade with a spear screaming "THIS IS ALL THERE IS TO THE GAME", which is about as disingenuous as playing a Mario game and saying "ALL YOU DO IN THIS GAME IS JUMP". Every other big game franchise is allowed to release incremental low-budget expansions, but if Konami does it suddenly it's a sin against gamers and a controversy that cuts to the very heart of the gaming community. I had to be reminded just now about the game's microtransactions because that's how little I interacted with them (basically they're no different from MGSV's), and I spent several months with this game killing zombies with my buds.

It's cool if you just didn't like the game, but so much about Survive's discussion was wrapped up in a perverse loyalty to Kojima, misrepresenting what the game offered, and just general "gently caress Konami". It was toxic.

tl;dr: Survive was fine.

This isn't even the final boss of the tutorial. This is pretty much the tenth enemy you fight in the entire game. They throw a couple of mooks at you to show you the controls, and then within five minutes, you're doing this poo poo, and the game just KEEPS GOING HARDER after that.

Most of the zip lines I found didn’t connect to anything when I needed them.

Also I only built a road the one time I had to for a quest. I’m not even sure where I was supposed to be placing them.

Are you done with the game? There are a bunch of places after reaching Mountain Knot City which would be a major hassle to try and reach exclusively by truck or hiking.

e: Looks like you said you beat it on the last page. The idea of doing everything in the mountains without any ziplines sounds miserable.
