I read a synopsis on season 2 and boy did that sound bad. Committing war crimes for the greater good then suffering no consequences for it is the stupidest poo poo and shows need to stop doing it. Hard men making hard choices (that subjugate and murder minorities) are stupid plot points. What a stupid follow up to season one, which I saw and it was amazing.

Those Cybershell Sonic videos still look pretty sharp now. The language may not necessarily be for everyone cause it's mid-late 2000s but this was back in the day when lots of gameplay on YT was still recorded with cameras and this was amazing by comparison. Some people in the UK scene still record with cameras mind...it's actually comforting and nice, just chill gaming and nattering. And Deceased Crab still does the same stuff as ever, for something closer to SA.

My favorite bit of Cybershell lore continuity is how in his Knuckles run of Sonic 3, he talks about buying Reduced Fat Ritz Crackers and Diet Snapple, and in his Half Life: Blue Shift LP, he's got both of those sitting off to the side of the monitor.

I spent some time reading through those exact collected letters in detail many years ago, and he does very obviously go through a whole series of political and personal changes in the final decade of his life, and if you look carefully you can kind of see some of it reflected in his fiction, albeit in a clumsy fashion. This doesn't change or recontextualise his earlier racism, and it certainly doesn't erase the places where it gets into his writing, or in some cases forms the foundation of a story, but if you're interested in the history of the man himself it's kind of important to acknowledge that he wasn't some static caricature.

There's a general thing that he also seemed to chill out a lot once he moved back to Providence. Some of his general bigotry came from seeing the rough state of New York at the time with the slums overtaking all of the beautiful buildings from his imagined visions of the city. He decided to blame minorities and immigrants instead of, you know, the slumlords who actually hosed it all up. So, nice to see some confirmation that he got a little smarter about it toward the end, maybe. Still a shame about the old racism though.

In that thread Lindsay links to an article somebody wrote about it and the only thing that's kind of concerning is Addison's state of Virginia has bad anti-SLAPP laws but it does note that those could change soon and would be relevant to current cases.

Speaking as someone who has worked with small business finances. There's just no way to explain over social media how little of the patreon money ends up in someone's actual pocket after business expenses and taxes. Doubly so for people living in the US where you might also be using company money to finance your own health insurance as well as the health insurance for a part time employee that does support work. It's just better that they all hide the total and then let the chips fall where they may. Someone accusing you of making too much money is overwhelmingly doing so in bad faith anyway.

I've read about this before (not this letter, but the general topic), where towards the end of his life, Lovecraft started to turn around and work towards being a better person. However, it apparently doesn't get much attention, as opposed to talking about the name of his cat (which was apparently named by his dad). You can criticize the racism in Lovecraft's work, but it's hard to come down on him as a person. He was a shut-in, who was paranoid of nearly everything, which probably helped fuel his racism. He was not right in the head. Plus, he made little-to-no money off of his work and was poor for most of his life. His wife left him after like two years.

patreon chunks 5% of your income for themselves, approx 5% for processing fees, an additional transfer fee to move the money from patreon to your account and as of next month your donors will be charged a sales tax as well (albeit, that's tacked on on top of the amount they're donating). you have to pay income tax on your earnings which is approx 15%. patreon itself is also starting some sort of completely apeshit insane money wizardry for any foreign currency that i can't make sense of that seems designed to screw us over lol. theres only like 5 people on planet earth raking in big enough bucks on patreon to be considered bourgeoisie

If someone makes videos and then asks viewers to pay for it, and then their viewers choose to do so by themselves, I find it hard to begrudge that. Maybe their videos suck poo poo but people are giving them the money of their own free will. I'm not sure what the video maker is supposed to do. It'd be nice if they donated the extra to charity or something but you could say that about literally anything that produces an income.
