the movie is made by a senegalese-french woman and it is about the confusion of puberty and girlhood, especially with complicating factors such as cultural mismatch, religious mismatch, and how exactly young women are supposed to express their agency without also being shamed for having bodies. also one of the themes is how adolescent sexuality meets the internet and social media, especially when kids can just take pictures of their junk and put it online because kids are dumb and everyone has an internet connected camera, and what a giant yikes this is to have to grow up with. the film is called Mignonnes in french which basically means "cute young girls" because the plot centers around a young girl and her young girl friends trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0O7lLe4SmA so netflix totally did not handle the marketing of this film well, deciding to release it in the US as "Cuties", and way overplayed the whole "sexualizing young girls" angle and of course, with every brainless hellfucker online being a Qanon conspiracy theorist on high alert for pedophilia, the film has gotten review bombed by a million of the stupidest and most freaked out people online Mr. Fall Down Terror has a new favorite as of 02:26 on Sep 13, 2020 |

Like it's basically the same problem where people decide Lolita is a book about how great it is to gently caress kids while completely missing the subtext and literal text that no, it is not, and it is very bad, but then marketers contribute to that problem by sexualizing the covers despite that being something the author explicitly did not want. I'm not saying everyone has to go read Lolita, I haven't and I don't intend to, but it fits under the same umbrella where 'I will highlight a cultural problem' becomes interpreted as 'so you enjoy the problem!'

The Cuties bullshit has been raging in leftist and liberal circles as well, mostly among people who digest all news through headlines and never actually learn anything about the things they're mad about. I think a lot of it is seeing a chance to be mad at a corporation and running with it. It's surprising that the most nuanced take on it I've seen from an internet 'personality' was from Ben loving Shapiro. Mostly because acknowledging what the movie is actually about gave him an excuse to poo poo on both atheists and Muslims.
