Cup Runneth Over posted:I refuel at every other star on average anyway. It's easy for me to top off along the way while I'm maneuvering to the next jump. What I'm really looking for is advice from people who've spent time in the black and might say "no, don't do that, you'll gently caress yourself over in this situation you didn't consider and it won't be worth the extra jump range" A good rule of thumb is to down size your fuel tank not past the "at least 4 jumps at max range"-point. In my experience, every average explorer should have 60+ ly jump range and enough synthesis materials for at least 4 charged jumps. That gives you a maximum theoretical range of approx. 480 ly range before your tank is empty. That should be plenty, even in the darkest, tauriest parts of the galaxy. If you still manage to gently caress up after that, well apparently a full fuel tank wouldn't have helped you anyway! My min-maxed Phantom has a half-sized fuel tank, for example. Less would be silly, but as filled up with synthesis jumponium as I am, my approx. 63 ly jump range turnes into 126 with the best synthesis option, and I can do this 4+ times before running out. Coincidentally, I have roughly four jumps before my tank is empty, which tallies up to 504 light years I can travel in an emergency. Not bad for a downsized fuel tank! Also, often there are other, scoopable-stars just below or above a stretch of unscoopable stars, you just tend to jump over them when you have high jump range. As long as you aren't scratching along the outer edges of the galaxy, often you can simply switch to economic jumps and your 3% rest fuel suddenly is enough for a dozen jumps more. So don't panic if you gently caress up and your tank is mostly empty, just remember that you can still jump tons of times, just not to your maximum range!

Yeah IMO it's like the Corvette in that it's a ship that suffers from having the cockpit at the back of the ship, which is neat because it feels like you're on the bridge of a starship... right up until you actually have to delicately maneuver it and realize that it's tough to judge exactly how far your nose sticks out. Might be easier in VR, I don't know.

The Asp and viper are probably the best, but I like the anaconda; doesn't it have a whole enterprise-gently caress bridge with chairs and stuff in front of your panel? They should add your crew walking around and bracing for impacts, or at least manning the stations and doing some fake button pushing.

Might be easier in VR, I don't know. After a great deal of experience, I can tell you that the Corvette's nose extends 85-90 meters in front of your chair, depending on your ship kit. I actually have a little more difficulty piloting the Cutter in tight quarters because it has a gigantic rear end and you can't tell what you're slapping it against unless you are a savant at flying in 3rd person view. If the T9 wasn't such a dumptruck, it would be one of the coolest ships to fly around with purely because of the bridge. Thundarr fucked around with this message at 18:01 on Sep 12, 2020 |

Might be easier in VR, I don't know. I never had any trouble with maneuvering the Anaconda, but then I tend to use the radar a lot, ever since I nearly killed myself when trying to land my old Cutter on a heavy gravity planet. (It survived, but barely. The "landing" wiped out my class 8 shields and took a large chunk of hull after that.) Since then I maneuver less by using my eyes and more by looking at my radar map to see if I'm close to burrow into the ground like a meteorite in the next 5 seconds.

One of the reasons I prefer the Corvette to the 'conda is it's short enough to let you (barely) get close enough to ground terminals to scan them from your ship when doing planetary mission. The Anaconda is too long. Also as far as having a bunch of ship under you, I actually get around that by inverting the ship to get myself lined up. Then you can roll when you have a good angle of approach. This works fantastically for planetary landings - go in upside down then roll over when you enter glide. I've found relying on the radar and altimeter are best for actual touchdown, though. Use your instruments!

I've got some exploration questions. Apologies if these have been answered a million times, though I have been lurking in the thread for a while. How can I tell whether a system I've just jumped to has already been discovered (without flying a distance away from the system's main star and then scanning it)? Is there a way to see undiscovered systems in the galaxy map? Is there a way to see/review which systems I've personally discovered in my career? When I hit a ring with a probe and my ship tells me "Discovered 1 new astronomical body," what exactly does that mean? Is it indicating that I've found a mineral hotspot? Or are there different types of rings (similar to the different types of stars listed in my codex)? How do I know when I've just scanned a terraformable body? Is it a notification that's easy to miss? edit: Sorry, one more. Is there a page with a list of, I dunno, very strange systems? Like a Hall of Fame? When I started playing, I found a system that had over 100 planetary bodies and didn't realize that was remarkable until I'd done more exploring. Now I'm wondering what the record is. (I also just found a system with 9 stars in it, 8 Tauri stars orbiting a class B star.) resting bort face fucked around with this message at 22:44 on Sep 12, 2020 |

Usually if you're the first person in a system they won't show up on the system map or the ship minimap at all until you D-Scan then scope them out in FSS. 2) Nope 3) Not as far as I know, beyond screenshotting the Universal Cartographics pages when you turn in data. 4) I've never noticed that message so I'm not sure, there are Icy and Rocky ring types. I would guess it means hotspots but I'm not 100% 5) No it's not obvious beyond the first discovery in a galactic region. They'll only be within the habitable zone of the star which varies depending on star type so you can get a rough idea of where they'll be. Best way to tell is in the system map, the second tab will say "This body is suitable for terraforming".

I run EDDiscovery when I'm exploring and recent versions of that will have a little $ marker on valuable (terraformable+) planets and list it in the grid when you scan: Running a client like EDD or Market Connector also lets you add systems to EDDN and EDSM, big player-run initiatives to gather explored data.

Just remember that auto dock at those stations is disabled, and you're going to want at least one heat sink unit and an OK shield. Random explosions inside the station can gently caress you up if you have no shield.

Yeah, check on all that, the docking goes better each time and it seems popping one sink just before docking and one just after launch does great. What didn’t go great was getting interdicted with a hull full of passengers, I get rekt pretty quick there. So I’m roughly twice as many runs in the hole as I’ve made in rewards so far. Pure profit!

What's a good explore-a-conda build? I stripped out all the mining parts and started D-rating everything, but I still couldn't match my little DBX. I have my jump drive modified for extended range, am I looking at scrounging up a 3D engineered power plant or something? I could have sworn I got 70+ out of it when I had it built this way previously.

To get max range out of an exploraconda you have to unlock lots of lightweight engineering blueprints to knock the mass of all those huge core internals waaaaaaaay down. I've only gone to Felicity Farseer so far, as a result my best Anaconda explorer build is only edit: actually, looking at it again it's more like ~10 LY better, with a fighter bay because that's the only way I'm giving up my 447 m/s sleek yacht for a 233 m/s junk barge FBS fucked around with this message at 05:05 on Sep 13, 2020 |

You can save 51t just from getting to g5 lightweight on the sensors which is worth around 6.5ly of range. It's definitely worth doing though, a fully engineered exploraconda will go around 10ly further than any of the other good exploration ships.

The Guardian FSD isn't -that- bad, IIRC it only took two or three hours to figure out and grind the necessary parts. I think this was the walkthrough I used: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/walkthrough-guardian-module-blueprints.438289/#post6856649 - the biggest thing I remember is make sure you have point defense installed on the top of your ship. If you only want the booster it's a pretty quick grind once you figure out the Guardian site.

Possibly a 'government installation' or one of the science ones. There are hundreds and hundreds of cool installation models and layouts everywhere in the bubble, but to my knowledge nobody has made a list of them... the reason being they don't do anything and no missions ever lead there. Some of them spawn events if you hang out at them long enough, like defend against waves of pirates, but the pay is terrible and the AI is not very good at navigating around hard surfaces. Worth doing once maybe.

Bought the game at release and found it not very engaging, but trying to play now after a friend picked up a copy. I'm getting very frustrated. I finished a "Kill 40 ships" missions, but those ships were at unidentified signals I had to find flying around the system. The payout was 12m credits which seemed good for a new player. I'm now flying a viper mk4 with 2e multicannons and 1e beam lasters, 4a power plant and 4a shield generator. I've tried taking missions at or below my combat rank of "Mostly Harmless" of the type quote:Seek and destroy X ships from Y Faction I fly to a conflict zone, engage with a ship from the faction and spend some time burning it down to say 20% hull and the ship warps out, that or I get annihilated. I just came across a reddit thread that mentioned conflict sites have engineered NPC ships. I don't have Horizons. Is this content unplayable by the base game? There doesn't seem to be an indication I can't compete when accepting the mission. Is horizons required to get by? Picking up a harmless mission only to waste an hour trying to make progress in is not very fun. DARPA fucked around with this message at 18:09 on Sep 13, 2020 |
