Not "solved opioid addiction" or "lowered addiction numbers" just created a commission. That's it opioid addiction is solved.

To be fair to people, it does take a decent bit of digging to get past the poster and marketing on "Cuties." Like it ain't an article where you can just click through and the meat of the matter is there, you need to actually dig up who the creator is and what her statements on the movie are to see that it is not, in fact, intended as child porn.

It doesn't help that all of the actual bits I've seen of the movie are generally upsetting. Message or no, I don't think I could watch that movie. Everything I've seen of it is wildly uncomfortable.

I've also seen criticism of the fact that by casting actual pre-teens in the roles of fictional pre-teens who are inappropriately societally sexualized and having to try to navigate that, you're putting the actual pre-teens in sexualizing positions that might be difficult for them to navigate as people are attracted to the movie for the wrong reasons. I think that criticism has a decent point but I'm trying to figure out what the way to handle it best would be. Having the characters navigate situations that aren't portrayed onscreen? Portraying things more toned down but having people react as if it wasn't to depict the disconnect between what the characters feel they're doing vs the situations they're actually placed in?

Yeah I get that hearing from a black Muslim woman director can offer a new perspective, but there are plenty of works of fiction and documentaries exploring similar themes without feeling the need to show 12 year old girls twerking in skin tight clothing.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. At the very least older teens who have a better idea of what they're getting into with that. Again, I don't think the screenwriter is a bad person or anything, but I do think it's ethical to find a way to portray what's going on without actually having the pre-teen actresses doing the dancing. That said, I don't know how much screentime is devoted to that, I just know even if the answer is 'only a little' creeps are gonna swarm in on that and I don't want the actresses exposed to that.

Some of the shots I've seen aren't the dancing either, like kids just acting upsettingly sexily adult. I looked into it myself when I heard it was misrepresented, and all the actual movie bits I saw made me feel like I was on a watch list.

Even if the point is "This is bad," it was extremely hard to look at.

The scene making the rounds that people are melting down over is about 2 minutes in the last 10-15 minutes of the film, a scene which ends in the main character suddenly freezing up, panicking, and running home crying.

Having seen the film, it definitely does have uncomfortable moments, but (at least for me) these moments in the film are only when there is a male observer to their actions in the narrative. Otherwise, yea I appreciate that some people feel uncomfortable, but a lot of it is legit "kids being kids," or moreso "girls being girls," (many MANY of the things they do will be familiar to you if you remember your childhood at all). But yes, "girls being girls," in a real sense, not in an idealized or idyllic sense. And I think that's where a lot of the outrage and anger is coming from. A lot of the discomfort manifests itself in wilful refusals to acknowledge how the lives of tweens actually are. It doesn't do any good to close one's eyes and cover one's ears in relation to the inchoate and incomplete (but still real) understanding that tweens have about culture and sexuality and how they participate in it. Now despite that there's still a complex discussion of how much ought to be visually represented in a film about young girls. I'm not sure about having older people as stand-ins for this for the sake of protecting them from sexualization. A few women who were child actors have spoken up about this and in their experience this does not matter for whether they will be sexualized or harassed by men and pedophiles anyway.
