To continue the horror/thriller debate, I’m putting together my pool of movies for October to pull from... would Let The Corpses Tan be a good Halloween month pick? I’m trying to keep the list varied somewhat but I know absolutely nothing about it.

Thanks, the genre tags I was seeing around were putting me off but thought best to check. Supposed to be good so I’ll have to find some time at some point!

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I've discovered Hooptober in Letterboxd and decided to do that, but also to make things difficult I'm gonna try and do a different movie for each entry and then a bunch of others that are connected or I just want to watch. Plus the Fran Challenges. I spent way too much time figuring it out and making a bunch of double billings but I'm excited and have too many movies.

I'm doing Hooptober again this year as well as a 31-movie challenge for SA, trying to double up movies between the two when I can (and once Oct 1 hits - before that it's all Hooptober). I did Hooptober last year as well, it was a fun side game of finding the best fit.
I just have a placeholder in there to make it a public list, I'm going to choose as I go.

That box set is part of the Casino Security Blockbuster that I run out of my office. It's currently checked out to the day shift security supervisor so she can watch them all on vacation.

The Corpses Tan is a wild beast of a film that would make a spicy addition to any October watch.

Watch Amer too. While lighter on the horror elements it's a visual cornucopia that is able to reach through the screen in it's meditation on formative sexuality.

Quentin Tarantino : feet :: French director duo : leather gloves

These films will mark you.

Rest Stop is possibly the dumbest loving movie I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of dumb poo poo. Makes the Wrong Turn movies look excellent in comparison.

I actually like the first Wrong Turn quite a bit, the killer inbred redneck thing isn’t great but there are some really good set pieces. The part where they have to leap from the burning tower into the trees is genuinely harrowing. The first sequel has its moments too (mostly involving Henry Rollins), but 3-5 are pretty bad. Haven’t seen the most recent one.

A goon caught me mid-squat over the disappointment that was Hold the Dark to recommend Murder Party, and it made my horror hog squeal with delight!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmuFCekDZIo

After having seen all of Jeremy Saulnier's catalog, it's fair to say that he tends to gravitate around a certain theme. That theme is a group of friends doing a mountain of blow while contemplating murder. It's an odd through-thread to have in your work and it makes me suspect Saulneir didn't have a completely stable childhood.

Armchair psych aside, Murder Party is hilarious. It reminded me of This is the End but without the barrage of cameos- this has a whimsical absurdist sense of humor that isn't afraid to have a little bite to it. It is ultimately a critique on art, critics and the blood and guts behind artistic intent. It absolutely trashes people that you know, and maybe even you!

The protagonist is every goon, showing up to a sketchy party invite wearing jankey obviously-homemade armor. From there we learn the party isn't exactly as advertised, and the menagerie of characters we're introduced as phone-tapping dunces each in turn get to blossom in unique colors of murderous sadism. The violence is sudden and titillating and the killing is gory and satisfying.

It takes a lot to get a even a mirthful chuckle out of the stone-cold Walrus, but this movie had me bust a gut several times. I wish I saved it for October, but bad timing doesn't prevent this from ascending to new heights as a Walrus Certified Good Time.

Murder Party is a whole lot of fun, and all this talk about it reminds me of another goofy, semi-horror movie that involves a lot of cardboard.

If you haven't seen Dave Made A Maze, it's a lot of fun. There are horror elements but done in a very crafty (heh) way. Think of it as a whimsical, homemade version of Cube.

True as that may be, this was the image in the encyclopedia that I read as a kid and it led me to think about seeing reality in such a hosed up and, I don't know, geometrical way, and I found it terrifying. I just wanted to go to school and play DOS games. I did not want to ever see Horrible Fractal Cat again, especially not in nightmares (I did).

It felt kind of like a Lars von Trier film with its weird violence and sexuality suddenly intertwining out of nowhere. But there are only a few people where i'll watch literally anything they do and Saulnier is one of them. I don't even think I get Hold The Dark, but I don't care. He does his work so well that I enjoy watching it and if at the end I'm like "I'm not sure why that went that way," gently caress it, that's probably my fault and not his. (I include Refn in that category, but am also the only person I know who liked Only God Forgives).

That said, Green Room is loving excellent and one of the purest examples I've ever seen, as someone who majored in film, of a movie that is literally just about the actual, physical specifics of violence. How does killing a person work? how do you kill the people? what do you do with the bodies next? with none of that stuff swept away by screenwriting because it's actually relevant to the plot. Anyway I don't mean to derail your comment; I just absolutely love Saulnier. (also Imogen Poots who has the most ridiculous name in the world for an incredibly pretty woman who has suffered terrible disaster in the only two movies I've seen her in, Green Room and 28 Weeks Later).

Death Stranding is cheating. It's just his image. Darren Jacobs, voice actor, was the performer/actor.

It was really weird that they made Edgar Wright's voice actor American (almost Chicago-y sounding), which I assumed was to make the American themes stronger, and then NWR's voice actor was British.

I don't understand what anyone saw in the first one to be honest. It was like Michael Bay level "humor" and near The Asylum production value.
