In order to understand why the Ninja’s of Derith worship the Gods and their ways, you must first understand they’re very unique position. Derith is a long island nation that has been created over hundreds of thousands of years using live lava flow, the Ninja’s of Theremus do odd jobs, mercenary work, and in short try their best to keep to themselves. It’s local government is made of multiple branches, at the very top rests you, the players. You are “Operations” and you are in charge of making sure that numerous mercenaries, lords, and ladies that have joined your Ninja Academy make money for Derith. You do this with the help of pirates, who protect Derith in exchange for neutrality. Derith is mostly self sufficient, but they do not have the same access to foods and luxuries as the other two nations. The Pirates of Derith say they believe in the Ninja's gods, and is given peace and protection for their beliefs.

Derith itself is a neutral land, and lies between two continents that are both undergoing a civil war right now. Cartineaux has the world’s most prestigious magitek college, and is located on a continent that can fit most of Derith inside of it. They’re known for their airships, and their abilities to suffuse powerful magic with technology, to create a constant whirling of ideas. In Cartineuax, there is a civil war being fueled by agents of Theremus. Cartineuax’s leaders are democratically elected, but right now there is an argument being fought over. Since time immemorial Cartineuax always elected their leaders, with every citizen being allowed one vote, since birth, until the day they die. They created huge networks of communication infrastructure just for their voting system, and in all rights, has one of the fairest elections in the world. They are also exporters of luxuries, such as silk, cottons, and magical entertainment. You go to Derith to make your name known in the news stories. Some of Derith (mostly tradeports,_ and some of the cities in Theremus have access to these same luxuries. People will travel from villages all over Derith just to go to the town with the TV showing Cartineaux’s amazing wonderland. In Derith, beastmen are treated like people. They are allowed to hold titles and lands, and live wherever they choose, Derith is ruled under a military junta. In order to be elected as a leader of the country, you must be a member of the military, and those elite few who actually decide who goes on missions, the single most important thing for Derith, is handled by Ops. It is said that those in the Junta are able to speak to the gods directly, and that their guiding hand sees all the Ninja do.

They said Cartineaux had the fairest elections, and that was true until Corportariats recently threw an election askew, a group of bandits from an unknown region showed up, and burned votes in three distinct states, and which allowed the Corportariats to throw shade on the election, and call it illegitimate, now the conservative reigning king, whose term limit is up, is staying on and is making the nation decide, Revolution? Or sticking with the evil you know? Ontop of that, the local beastmen are making moves again, suggesting that they want equal citizenship, and a say in Cartineaux’s elections. Almost everyone doesn’t want to give them a shot in their elections, outside of radicals who believe that Beastman are people (Because they talk, hurt, love, sing, and dance just like people do.). There are two ruling parties in Cartineaux that are at war, there are those behind the revolution, Corportariats, who think that profits are a better guiding hand for the local world, that the corporations would do better governing themselves, not being held back by government interference. Then there’s the People & Liberty Movement, a political movement that has long held power saying that the government has a basic right to feed and house it’s people. Many members of the Derith religion serve in the People & Liberty Movement

Theremus Doesn’t have the accountants, scholars, bleeding hearts and engineers the likes of the Magitek College, instead you will find a more rural type of person. Theremus is incredibly rich in both resources, and minerals. They have strong trade lines with Cartineaux, supplying them food and minerals, in exchange for entertainment, and technologies that revolutionize the agrarian sector. Not many cities in Theremus have theaters, or Wonderland (The Cartineuax Entertainment unit,) and a farmer can make a pretty penny by renting one out, having them lay cable out to where the city is, and charging farmers rent to sit on one. Villagers in Theremus live a poor life, and have a much harder time with the local beastmen, who both laid first claim to the ground, and want the same rights as the colonizers from Cartineaux did. Many of the beastman in Theremus believe in the Denerith Gods

Cartineaux used to be part of a united alliance with Theremus, it was one of Theremus first colonies, and they had discovered Theremus, before anyone even knew Derith existed. Once there was proof there was a Third continent in the world, Theremus had taken all of the span of a few months to decide, that no, it should be a country too. There are some who argue about whether the lack of True Democracy for Theremus, when so much work had been done for Cartineaux to stay connected with itself, the inconvenient timing what with the looming war between Theremus and Derith, or resistance against the inconvenient truth that Beastmen were free in Derith, and nowhere else, that was the deciding factor. Though some ancient Derith scrolls say that it was a Ninja who raised the rebellion of Theremus itself, just to give Derith even footing between itself and the larger nation of Cartineaux. When asked, Derith simplay say "The Gods Provided."

Derith has managed to mostly stay neutral in these proceedings and signed treaties with both Cartineaux, Theremus, and the beast people of these respective nations. The Ninja of Derith are considered free agents, and no mission may be taken on for prospective mercenary work outside of the Ninja of Derith. In exchange, neither Cartineaux nor Theremus will declare war on each other or on Derith. Neither country will have a standing military larger than agreed, and if a new nation is discovered, all leaders will have a seat at the table. It was said that the Derith's Gods blessed this meeting, and have taken a personal hand in making sure it stays upheld.

There was a particularly nasty Beastmen uprising in Cartineaux that both Theremus and Derith needed to send troops too. It nearly wiped out the bulk of the Ninja, and all three nations standing forces. Derith took a 2 year hiatus as the nation’s peacekeepers, to recoup their losses. It was said that Derith's gods took the battlefields themselves, and empowered the Ninja, saving the last of the Ninja in Derith.

Now, 2 years later, you are left in the operation’s room once again, for the first time since the loss of Asward and most of his disciples, you are to begin as Ninja again, and show your strengths as an academy. To reassert yourself as peacekeepers, and keep these 3 nations from slipping into complete chaos.

Mission 01

The fragile alliance between the coastal pirates, and the sailors of Derith, where you are from, has been upheld by the protection of simple leylines around the land. These leylines are important to us, because we believe them to be important to the gods. It is believed that the protection of these ley lines allow the gods to grant us boons, and are created for the soul purpose of the connection between us and our gods.

As a symbol of peace, we each year send a handful of academy students, and some genin to practice their first mission. It is good to show the academy students the rigour and necessary might of military role. Some say that this year, there is an omen, and so it is recommended that Waafe be sent, Dreamsward is offended by this, as he sees it a direct slight on his position, to become the next Chuunin, when Waafe becomes Jounin eventually, to fill the hole left by Asward.

Waafe would like nothing more then for one of the Genin to become Jounin, the titles felt frankly made up to him. He was there to see that the home nation was strong, and that contracts kept coming their way. Not to mention making sure that these academy students become something useful. He would feel removed from his duties to take a promotion, when there was still so much good he felt he could do with his students.

Terry and Dreathers want nothing more than to see Dreamsward fail. As far as they are concerned he’s a pompous rear end, and has never treated anyone with respect. He coasts alone on the fact that everyone looks up to him, and thinks he’s soooo charming.

What’s going on with the academy students you asked?

Well, I don’t really know, but I think they filled personality cards out somewhere, if you just ask them for one. Just don’t. They get… Ideas when you talk to them.

But honestly who cares about them? They’re useless, and most of them won’t even be good for peasant work. It’s better to cater to skills when you can see them.

This mission is of the utmost importance, because it is seen as a right of passage, and is said to bestow blessings on our people. It is said the gods themselves touch our people and guide them.

Operations

The bare minimum you need to know to play OPs, you pick 4 NPCs, and you send them on a mission, and participate in OPs votes. That's all that's needed to know to play OPs, everything else is just for you to make more complete decisions. (You can pick a person more than once, if you want really want to make sure a person goes on a mission. In addition, for posting, you get an additional vote every turn you’ve posted, and you can get another additional vote every time you post with art, or roleplay in someway.)

You get 4 votes, +1 for posting, +1 for posting with art or RP. With the maximum amount of votes you would earn that turn, vote for who you want to go on the mission of peace.

Oh right, what happens on the mission of peace

On the mission of peace, 5 Pirates of Derith, and 5 of the tribes village go on a mission to protect the leylines from beasts. You will be sending 5 of our Ninja, sending 6 would be seen as a power play to the sailors of Derith, and sending 4 would make us look weak. So we are sending 5. The leylines once per year become under attack, and we must protect it or else bad things will happen. The Ninja’s who get sent on this mission normally receive a blessing, we must send an envoy that can handle the night’s onslaught, and also will use that blessing effectively.

D(1) ~ S(5) ranked mission.

Gods

You get 1 votes, +1 for posting, +1 for posting with art or RP. With the maximum amount of votes you would earn that turn, vote for which of the following happens at the ley line ritual

A.) Trial by combat ( Will raise stats of some if passed, raise danger from C to B by 1 rank)
B.) Trial by wits ( Will raise stats of only one, lowers danger from C to D by 1 rank)
C.) Trial by misfortune (Will raise stats of all, if passed, raises danger from C to A by 2 rank)
D.) Trial by fear (Will raise stats of all who survive, raises danger rank from C to S by 3)

You can not be on Operations, and God, but post an application for both if you want to do both, I will either be picking based on first come first serve, or most legends written about, or one of the two. This first turn will be weird, but that’s just because picking the initial 4 is weird, and I kind of might just do rng.

How do I play
There are three roles in this game that are important to keep track of:

There is the bulk of you known as the “Ops” You are the operation teams, you give intel to your teams, create different ranks of teams, and push them forward on missions.

There are a select few of you, which are voted on, or chosen as random as I see fit, you are “Gods” You will have the ability to greatly change the story, and will be given chances to interject. On top of that, you can change the story at any point after it’s posted, by using your boon.

Finally, there are the one no-one plays, they are Shinobi. These are a list of NPCs with randomly assigned stats, traits, Likes, Dislikes, and Synch. You send these guys off on missions, where they get ranked and grow. They will keep in contact through what amounts to texts and images through a cell phone like device, and will regularly ask you for help on these missions

Ops
The bare minimum you need to know to play OPs, you pick 4 NPCs, and you send them on a mission, and participate in OPs votes. That's all that's needed to know to play OPs, everything else is just for you to make more complete decisions. If you don't want to read all these rules, and just start voting, go straight to Mission 01.

Generating Legends

You generate a legend by telling a story about two or more gods, every god that was directly involved in your legend, gains that legend. That is now a legend they can evoke to grant a boon. Legends about your own God are allowed, all the legends are then thrown into a poll for that round, and one is chosen to become canonized.

Gods
All god players require a little more effort, first you need to fill out an application to be a god, in the God Application Thread. You need the following things:

Name: Who are you, what are you called?
Picture: Just describe this if you want me to draw one, otherwise find a picture that works for your purposes.
Legends: Leave this blank, you will be writing 2 of these once the game starts officially.

List every Legend mentioning you, and your own legend

Domain: List a brief description of yourself, who you are, what you are about

Boons: This is always a 1 or 0, when this hits 0 you go into rest, Otherwise you have 1 Boon to spend before you must rest. A boon can be almost literally anything, as long as it follows the following rules:

  • Gods can never take away something’s free will.

  • You as a god can’t outright kill things. As this would removes it’s right to free will

  • You as a god can not imprison things. As this would remove it’s right to free will.

  • Even if you create a new life, you must give it free will. You can not take this right away.

  • You may not create life that does not have free will.

  • You can not create a tool or a machine without it having free will.

Otherwise, you may do anything you’d like with your free boon. Boons that are just clever ways to get around these rules will be ok, but the rules may change.

Posting Power: Every voting round, you participate in gives you 1 extra vote, every fan art gives you 1 extra vote as well. This resets after a God “Rests.”

Rest: This is the thing you do after you grant your boon. Your energy is all spent up, and your time is spent “recuperating” in some way. This does not necessarily have to be literal rest. You could spend all your free time holding up the world, or fighting the ancient snake that holds the seal of evil, or having wild parties that run on for years. It doesn’t matter, what you do is yours, and will be referenced occasionally when you’re not a god.

Shinobi

Shinobi go on Trials which are mission assigned to the Ops team that need to be solved there are not a lot of Shinobi maybe between 30 - 50 at one time, and most of them you will get to know via their reports, their stats, and their relationships with other creatures. They have 5 stats, which portray to their skills

Shinobi’s have a rank between F (0) and S (5). You roll a 3d6, and add your rank to see if you succeed. The trials themselves also have a rank between F (0) and S (5). If your Trial matches your rank, you have a 50/50% chance of succeeding. A Shinobi with an S-Rank ability has a 2% chance of failing an F-Rank test. A shinobi with an F-Rank ability has about a 5% chance of beating an S-Rank test.

Str - Strength How strong they are, how fast you can swim, how far you can climb, and how much hell you can put yourself through. This has some overlap with dexterity, and Flexible tasks will use the higher ability modifier between the two

Dex - Dexterity How fast you are, how agile and nimble you are, how stealthy you can be, how well you can pick locks. This has some overlap with strength, and Flexible tasks will use the higher ability modifier between the two

Int - Intelligence How well you can remember reports, discern information, and study. This has some overlap with Wisdom and so Smart tasks will use the high higher ability between the two

Wis - Wisdom How well you can discern knowledge on reports, read people, and perception of your surroundings. This has some overlap with Intelligence, so Smart tasks will use the higher ability between the two.

Cha - Charisma How well you can handle others, The highest Charisma score of your group will be halved, and added to any tests or trials

Nin - Ninja Magic Many tests or trials will have Ninja Magic as an alternative to their option, this means your character can call upon mystical means to bypass the problem. Not every problem can be solved by Mysticism, and will be marked as such.

The final stats are more of who the Ninja is, it’s good to keep personality, likes, and dislikes in mind when sending them on missions. Ninja’s who have a good “Synch” score will give each other bonuses when sent on Trials together. The same is true with ninja who have negative” Synch scores. These too are from F(0) to S(6)

There are 4 rank of Shinobi

Academy Students These are the lowest rank of Shinobi, and are kept in school to increase their ranks through mission work and study. They get the basic training any ninja must know to be useful in the field. They are mostly used as day labourers when they are not studying or training.

Genin These are worker Ninja, the Genin tend to go on dangerous missions

Neat, I'm in. Here's a god.

The Watchmaker

Domain: The Watchmaker probably didn't create the Universe. This much is known, this much it claims. But beyond the veil of perceived reality, and sometimes -just sometimes- within it, the Machinery ticks away, to an end, but an End regardless, known only to itself, that it works tirelessly upon to complete. The God of Time, Order and Fate, and the occasional odd manifest anachronism, The Watchmaker is an eccentric even among the Divine, but its boons and wisdom are sought after regardless, whenever it deigns to dispense them.

Legend: TBA

God Vote: C, Trial by Misfortune (2 votes). Misfortune is a misnomer, so knows The Watchmaker. It is a necessity for mortals to be rid of such superstitions for clarity to manifest.

Name: Karasu

Legends: Great winged Karasu flew to the heavens to pluck fire from the [Sun god], in order to give its power to humanity. [Sun god] now chases Karasu across the sky, creating the night and day cycle.

Domain: Karasu is a trickster god of the night, a clever bird with rainbow feathers blackened by the smoke of the first flame. Karasu takes care of those who are swift and cunning and protects their secrets in its darkness.

Boons: 1

God Vote: The trickster-god would want the first ordeal to be a trial of of Wits (B, 2 votes), in order for it to find the smartest student of the bunch.

Whoops, you apply for OP by participating in the normal CYOA, so if you want to be an OP, you're an OP, start voting. If you want to have a character and a picture, that's your choice, otherwise I just accept your votes as is.

If you want to learn a little bit more about an NPC, just ask for a Personality Report on one, and I'll make a little card or something to tell you about them. Only NPCs you ask for a personality report / you interact with, will have images or things like that, everyone will be a faceless name until you take some interest into them.

Got it!

First, who is Feathers? "Feathers and Dreathers" seem to dislike Dreamsward, but I can't find them on my personel list.

Second, are academy students replaced over time? Or is this my pool to work with period?

Waafe clearly knows the current crop of ninja the best, I'd like to get Waafe's opinion on which of the genin would be best and worst (one of each) suited to the upcoming mission.

That depends entirely on the trail itself I think, but if I had to pick for what this mission would involve, I would pick Fyodor, he's as strong as the strongest Genin there and also, er, somewhat smarter than most of them by the looks of it. I think he wouldn't struggle too hard.

That would let us try to grow one of the shinobi to be more powerful genin, and Fyodor isn't going to try to lead the group and cause the others to be unhappy. The real question becomes whether we support Dreamsward's ambitions, or blackball him for being more concerned with personal advancement than the villiage...

Feathers is Terry, clerical error, the paper work has been updated.

Waafe thinks for a minute, "I think that you should send a beefed up squad this year, normally it's 4 Academy Students and a Genin, but this year is dangerous, and I think we should bring either 4 students and me, or 3 students and 2 Genin. Of the students Pyralis, Fyodor, and Pryderi, are who I think are currently best in class. They're the furthest along in the Ninja Arts class, and I think they're strong magic will shore up their short comings.

I don't want to go, personally, I have an inkling that something more important might come up, and honestly, the entire village would expect me to be graduating to Jounin if we mixed things up to have me receive the blessings. If we send 2 Genin, we either have to send Dreamsward, or not send Terry and Dreathers. Either will be considered an insult, and quite frankly he would be right."

I am a wizard, not a poet.
Based on this information Here is my submitted group for the upcoming mission:

Leader: Terry
Second in Command: Dreathers
Team Members: Fyodor, Dagan and Cassia

Rationale: We want to make sure we've got good coverage of skills, and that the leader has the strongest personality of the group to prevent the chain of command from breaking down. Additionally I want to make sure that we are rewarding those who have shown themselves loyal to the village, so the leader of a squad should have the seniority in position or in grade.

I don't know if we can do non-mission assignments, but I want Dreamsward to take on a team of 3 Academy Students, of his choice, and prove that he deserve promotion to Chuunin by demonstrating his ability to teach skills and lead a team.

Rationale: While Dreamsward is a solid shinobi, advancement needs to be more than just skill, it also needs to be the ability to pass those skills on. Ensuring that our upper ranks are able to help our lower ranks mature will mean that we have a strong core to build from. I propose advancement from genin->chunin always involve proving the ability to teach academy students new skills.
