I recently picked up a betamax player, the Sanyo VCR 6400. I ordered new belts for it, so need to find the time to take it apart and give it a good cleaning. Also bought a pile of about 25 beta tapes, most of which are home recordings, in the hopes of finding interesting old commercials.

They’ve eased up on a lot of that stuff in recent years, so you can find a ton of old games on YouTube that random people recorded forever ago, sometimes including commercials. It can be really funny for stuff, like the first games Fox aired in 1994 have the announcers reading promos for Zima. As an example, the first half of Super Bowl XVI on that tape, which was the first time John Madden and Pat Summerall called a Super Bowl, is already on YouTube (Along with the Up with People halftime show :v:).

I think it was Peter had “implied oral consent”

edit: I'm wrong. The Simpsons had the "implied oral consent" joke.

I'm not really a hoarder, I just buy up alot of vintage items at estate auctions.

I have a Beta player....SOMEWHERE and a bunch of tapes scattered around. One day, I'll be able to combine the two.

Pioneer CLD-M403 Laserdisk player. Picked this up several years ago from an older man purging his old A/V stuff
He had it hooked up and playing, but this has sat in the closet, or in storage for a long time.

I *think* I have a laserdisc.....somewhere that I can use to test this but....one day. One day. I know the belts tend to deteriorate in these sorts of things.

I even have the remote. It's got a cool round springy knob like you see on the far right .

You should be able to play CDs on that, the tray that slides out should have a small circular depression for CDs. I have Pioneer CLD-D925 thats sounds good as a CD spinner.

I really want a decent Betamax so I can rip all these early-mid 80s Betamax tapes at my parents' house. The one we have was picked up at a yard sale for $2 (my dad was really annoyed because the kept telling him "it's not a VCR, it's a Betamax") and the tracking on it is absolute poo poo that needs constant readjusting every couple of minutes

I'll do the same! Let me get on ebay/Facebook and find the cheapest Laserdisc, so I have something to test with.

I actually have another Laserdisc player in my closet, so it'd be good to finally get around to do something with them.

I posted a "Looking for" on Facebook, and was informed a booth at a local flea market has a bunch of LD. Guy said there were a bunch of classics. NO idea what the prices would be.

A friend of mine saw the post, and said he could loan me a couple discs to test the players out on, so that worked out.

Ill probably still swing by that place, and if the prices are right, pick some up. Could bundle them with the players.

Saw this and thought of this thread:

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-54239180

quote:

"The mystery of why an entire village lost its broadband every morning at 7am was solved when engineers discovered an old television was to blame.

An unnamed householder in Aberhosan, Powys, was unaware the old set would emit a signal which would interfere with the entire village's broadband.

After 18 months engineers began an investigation after a cable replacement programme failed to fix the issue.

The embarrassed householder promised not to use the television again.

The village now has a stable broadband signal.

Openreach engineers were baffled by the continuous problem and it wasn't until they used a monitoring device that they found the fault.

The householder would switch their TV set on at 7am every morning - and electrical interference emitted by their second-hand television was affecting the broadband signal.

The owner, who does not want to be identified, was "mortified" to find out their old TV was causing the problem, according to Openreach.

"They immediately agreed to switch it off and not use it again," said engineer Michael Jones.

Engineers walked around the village with a monitor called a spectrum analyser to try to find any "electrical noise" to help pinpoint the problem.

"At 7am, like clockwork, it happened," said Mr Jones.

"Our device picked up a large burst of electrical interference in the village.

"It turned out that at 7am every morning the occupant would switch on their old TV which would, in-turn, knock out broadband for the entire village."

The TV was found to be emitting a single high-level impulse noise (SHINE), which causes electrical interference in other devices.

Mr Jones said the problem has not returned since the fault was identified.

Ideally, the input amplifier should only accept and amplify its received signal. In reality, some of that signal is reflected, and some of the signals from further inside the TV leak out.

When he turns it on, this guys TV seems to blast out a big pulse o' energy. This blinds everyones modems/routers until they resync.

Regarding laserdiscs, I found A Clockwork Orange at Weird Stuff in San Jose and bought it because I liked the big-format cover art. Then I posted an ad on craigslist asking if anyone had a player... and some guy brought me a very nice LD player and a box full of movies, for free. Over half of them are Disney, including Japanese releases of Bambi and Song of the South, but there was also Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, and a few other good ones. Maybe I just got lucky because I was in the SF bay area, but anybody looking for a player or discs might want to try it.

2001 would be a good watch on LD but that has to be at least two discs, right?

My brother had Tombstone (which was 2 discs) and it had all kinds of extras and deleted scenes. I was beyond pissed when I plunked down $25 for the DVD when it first came out (in 1998/1999 dollars, mind you) and it was just the movie - no extras, nothing. They had the files! All they had to do was put them on the disc, dammit!
