Tarnop posted:Oh, I suppose that's fair (although sucks for people who live alone like me). $20 is like 3 cinema tickets in the UK. in the US (or in my area at least) $20 is at best just under 2 tickets for a matinee, or like 1.5 during regular hours. Barely more than 1 if you’re going to a fancy theater. $20 isn’t too bad if you’re watching with at least 2 people.

It's a necessity for the film industry right now to charge that much so I get it, but I'm not gonna say it's actually worth that price. When I go to the theater I'm not paying just to watch the movie, I'm paying for the huge screen and the sound system and just in general the idea that you're "out". It's a social thing, you've left the house and made a plan to go to do this thing, we're goin to see a movie tonight! At home you get none of that, so I'm paying just to access the movie itself. Without all the bells and whistles that come with an actual theater I don't think the price is worth it(unless you're a parent and $20 is worth having your kids shut the hell up for two hours).

I personally just pay to see a film early AND if it's a movie that I absolutely care that much about and little changes with this for me since I go see so few. Now that we are at 70"+ 8K TVs and full wireless Dolby sound setups that can fill a room without having to hide wires all over the place, the theater experience itself doesn't add too much if you have a proper setup. And I hate being around people, so I'm kind of good with this; I'll pay the extra 10 to not be forced to drive somewhere and be in a dirty theater around other people.

Well yea but I'm not one of those people who is able to have a 75 inch t.v. and a full surround sound setup, I just don't have the financial means to do that. I mean, it's always been that way where sure some people have the ability to just put full home theaters in their home but I'm never gonna be one of those people so the theater has advantages that I can't reproduce with my home setup.

I get that, and can easily sympathize. The kind of point I'm making, though, is that 25 years ago, everyone had 32" square CRTs or at best, 40 or 50 inch projections that mayyyybe were 720p, maybe, but needed bulbs and the right lights around it. Along with big bulky stereos with a ton of wiring that were a little above broadcast radio quality. Now that home theater can almoooooost match a good theater experience, for real, for $1000 total, there's a level of matching and accessibility that we never had before, so I don't really see what other option we have with film releases of a certain level than to charge theater type prices.

I understand what he means. I hardly ever went to the movie theaters to see a specific movie. Either I went with someone who wanted to see a movie or wanted to plan a date with my girlfriend and thought "let's go to the movies, alright which one?" And looked it up. The last movie I saw in a theater was a Nightmare On Elm Street showing. I couldn't imagine paying 20 dollars when it won't be 20 in a few months. I do understand why they're priced them there though.

Apparently 30% of the Disney+ subscriber base paid extra to watch Mulan, to the tune of 200+ million bucks. If that's true, they're going to take a hard look at the need for having theaters at all.

I'm kinda used to it now. Basically whatever I used to spend on movie theatres has gone towards VOD stuff, with the added bonus that I can eat and smoke what I want, watch with my doggo on the couch next to me, and can pause/rewind when I want to take a piss or revisit that sweet castration scene. I'm not saying I'm never going to a theatre again, but I have significantly less desire to do so until there's a vaccine now that there's another option.

I've started to really consider the cost to store and maintain a physical media collection, especially considering the amount of times I rewatch most of that stuff is not high. Streaming services are basically cloud storage for me.

I rewatch basically everything I buy, and I rarely blind buy. But I realize I'm in the minority, for instance I bought the Shout Factory Candyman release for like $15 a few months ago, watched it immediately, and now I'm gonna be watching it again in October. I have several hundred blu rays and I've watched them all at least twice.

Binged a bunch of urban exploration videos and now I'm in the mood some horror with a similar feel, anyone have any recommendations of movies with locations being abandoned buildings/towns, tunnels, caves, etc.? Something like: As Above So Below, The Tunnel, The Descent, Grave Encounters, Chernobyl Diaries.

Antebellum isn't the worst film I've seen during the pandemic that was originally supposed to come to theaters. Because I also saw Artemis Fowl. But it's close I've been alternating between sad and mad (mostly mad) but if there's anything I know I can say about Antebellum right now, it's that

I'm still going to watch it but are the criticisms that it's mostly slave-torture-porn valid? I'm inclined to put it on the back-burner if so.

flashy_mcflash posted:I'm still going to watch it but are the criticisms that it's mostly slave-torture-porn valid? Yes Well...I don't know if I'd say mostly, but the full first 38 minutes linger between (intimidation, beatings, branding, rape, murder), then there's a lengthy break before any of it really happens again A friend/critic I trust, before I'd watched, compared it to The Nightingale. I definitely noticed similarities in that department, though this made me madder than Nightingale did (significantly because of where it all wound up going, which I won't get into because spoilers; it's near impossible to talk about Antebellum without bringing up the ending, so just a heads up, don't read Antebellum reviews if you plan on seeing it)

I'd consider any comparisons to The Nightingale to be a compliment. The Nightingale was one of the best movies of the year in 2018 imo(I didn't see it until recently though, thank you bracketology thread).

See this really surprises me, I felt that there was at least one obvious Crowley film that put his name back into pop culture and for the life of me I can't find anything that isn't a short doc. His name looms large still (I guess being linked to the Beatles and Led Zep does that?). I had a conversation with a Co-owner of Boleskine House (now really just ruins that are being rebuilt) who says because of the legend around Crowley it's still really hard to get permission from local councils, etc due to the thousands of complaints lodged online any time there is movement. Hardcore conspiracy and religious nuts are still shook up by him a film would be amazing.
