Would you be my new best friends?

It still blows my mind that people can watch Vic Mackey destroy his entire life, career, reputation, friendships, marriage, relationship with his children etc and go,"He won!" purely because he managed to avoid going to jail (he just ended up in an entirely different kind of jail).

I mean the show itself was a bit confused on what it wanted. Sure drama wise he went through the ringer but while as a cop he was effectively a superhero.

He ended up in his own version of Hell. They cut his deal and then he confessed to a series of crimes so horrific they were visibly furious and made it clear the rest of his days were gonna be spent sitting at a desk filing papers and he'd never work the streets again.

There's also the epilogue of The Shield that was finished in the series finale of Sons of Anarchy which was truly a delight to watch.

Oh I've never seen that! I stopped watching Sons of Anarchy after like season 4, it got SO bad. Was the epilogue a standalone thing or just a reference?

op's making a joke. spoiler: Chiklis plays a trucker (quantifiably not Vic Mackey) who splatters the main character and his bike across the front of his truck while shouting JESUS! (the main character is also holding his hands out in the crucifix pose, embracing death to save his friends. it is a very subtle allegory.)

sons of anarchy really was the show for people who thought tony and walt and vic were wicked cool

Season 2 benefited from Ron Perlman in general and two great villains in Adam Arkin and Henry Rollins as neo-Nazis trying to take over Charming. After that you got the IRA and Jax's kid being kidnapped and it taking like most of the season for the club to actually get to Ireland and then it just circled the drain. Kurt Sutter never could figure out whether he loved the outlaw biker life or was trying to show how it hurt those in it like David Chase did so well.

The show had very good actors and compelling characters throughout it's run, but Sutter was just absolutely terrible at plotting stuff out. The later season plotlines were not just extremely dumb, they were also repetitive to the point of parody.

They also became excessively joyless. Season four was bad, but after watching Opie get beat to death I just tapped out. It had also gone to absurd lengths of 'Everybody knows Clay is horrible but we keep him around anyway.'

S1&2 of SoA are fantastic, like prestige drama tip tier level. It completely goes off the rails after that point as Sutter just went wild with his insane plots. You can read up on The Shield development process where Sutter would routinely pitch some extremely weird poo poo to the writing room and they would turn it down.

In season 4/5 of SoA someone gets drowned in a bathtub full of piss. Yes, you have questions, but trust me, that's all you need to know to understand how his mind worked.

Sutter seems like a writer who needs someone to tell him "no". I remember hearing he wanted Dutch to be a serial killer in the Shield. Sons of Anarchy isn't great but Walton Goggins as Venus Van Damme was pretty amazing.

That would explain the scene where Dutch murders a cat, it must have been a deleted scene they left in by mistake

There was a very brief scene, I am talking 45 seconds, where Dutch returns a laptop that he apparently used to investigate child pornography on his own. He had to clear the porn off his laptop before he returned it.

That was going to be, well, the beginning of a thing.

I think they wanted that in there because it shows the lengths Dutch is willing to go to in order to try to understand, and therefore catch killers. He does it because he thinks it might give him some sort of insight into how they think. Of course, it doesn't and he immediately regrets doing it.

That's a pretty good character moment. Sutter doesn't understand character moments like that, with him everything has to be a big dramatic twisting and turning plot.

Yeah, and as Sutter wanders further up his own butt as the series progresses you can see him get away from little character moments. It's all very Serious Business and, again, joyless. David Chase has Paulie be at turns pathetic, hilarious and scary and it all fits the character.

Just wanna stress that as others have mentioned, I quite enjoy the Tony B plot but it's still distracting how he just kind of appears out of thin air with this supposed massive importance to Tony's entire life.

I'm up to season 5 on my rewatch now and I can mostly look past the whole "Tony B shows up out of nowhere" thing but where it really comes out as jarring is the scenes where suddenly he's part of the inner circle and is involved in major events. Like I just watched the episode where Tony is about to shoot Chris in the head because he's on a rampage about the car crash with Adriana, and the only thing that saves him is Tony B intervening at the last minute to appeal to his conscience and it's like...it feels like a character who's been on the show for more than three episodes should have had that kind of sway over Tony. It's a weird comparison, but those scenes keep making me think of mister poopy butthole from rick and morty.

I'm only a few episodes in so maybe that doesn't happen too much more, but I think it does bring the season down just a little bit.

Listening to the podcast last night, one of the early episodes, and Michael mentions that in that episode where they have the Bucco's cater their dinner party, Carmella mentions the Trillos. Funny that the name comes up so early, I never noticed it before. Of course, not going to have a couple come to their party then suddenly Tony meets Gloria as a stranger years later, but an interesting tidbit

Upon my recent rewatch I was surprised at how many characters seemingly just show up out of nowhere at the beginning of a season.

It's interesting to compare Tony B showing up to Ralphie who also pops up out of nowhere, both with excuses for not being around, but Ralphie feels a lot more like part of the world.

Ralph and Tony B are the big ones, but I’m pretty sure Vito, Bobby, the guy who died on the toilet and twins just kind of show up out of nowhere in between seasons too. And once they showed up it was just like they’d been there all along.

At least Ralph and tony had reasons they weren’t around.
