ok so im getting close to the end and theyre actually doing the hotel stuff and i can see how the filmmakers thought this was woke but holy poo poo you cant spend the first half hour talking about how the negroes are unreasonably destroying detroit and then say that the cops are the bad guys because they freaked out and thought there was a sniper in the hotel even though snipers are definitely real and the cops have good reason to be scared and also there are good cops who understand that the one crazy cop who they were totally going to bring up on murder charges before this public relations disaster is crazy

the really ridiculous thing is that the cops are using the exact same moral reasoning in detroit that the spooks were using in zero dark thirty the only reason they come off as unsympathetic is because in detroit the characters being brutalized are exposited ahead of time as characters in their own right who dont actually know anything if at any point in zero dark thirty we were given reason to believe that the dudes being tortured were actual human beings or that they didnt know anything or hell that people even existed who recognized what was being done to them was monstrous i might actually be able to buy the take that zero dark thirty is nuanced instead of explicit fascist bullshit

final comment i really love how a movie that is literally premised on police brutality still manages to make defense attorneys the bad guy in the form of union lawyer jim krasinksi of all the ridiculous people that could have been used for a walk on role

just insanely impressive laser focus on racism in a vacuum as being the cause of all our problems and willful ignorance when it comes the idea that our legal system is designed to facilitate racism not the other way around

I watched "The Social Dilemma" tonight and while there's a half-way decent message at the heart of it, there's also a bunch of lovely liberal ideology smuggled into it, mostly in the skits/dramatizations that they do about how all this social media manipulation translates to Families In The Real World.

Like, a lot of the real-world clips reference things like Bolsonaro, or Trump rallies, or the incitement of racial violence against the Rohingya, but you get to the dramatized stuff and they have to create this movement called "Extreme Centrists". There's a poster of the raised fist, as in BLM/worker symbology, except the caption is "Don't Vote", and despite all of the visual signals indicating that this is supposed to be someone getting radicalized into becoming an alt-right/far-right shithead, complete with getting addicted to videos of guys ranting inside their cars and cheesy vitamin supplements and fake news, they can't commit to the bit so they have to conjure up this image of a political faction that does all the things that the far-right does, yet they refuse to call it like it is.

Is, uh, part of that segment a rally in a park in the fall where someone ends up getting in a very tame looking fight? Because I might have just found out what the gently caress I was witnessing last November.

i remember how in stranger things season 2 towards the end there was an episode where it was all about the psychic girl going off on her own adventure and sidelined the main plot of the season. people got really mad because it interrupted the flow of the story and introduced a whole other set of characters and a plot that isn't touched on again. lovecraft country is like that but every episode. they should have made it a drat anthology series like the book

the guy who plays atticus owns, tho. his style is so loving weird and vulnerable and its just a real joy to watch

yeah, this perfectly describes why i tapped out on this show.

i think i’ll go ahead and finish it, but the pseudo-anthological nature of the show is maddening to me, which i guess is pretty on point for the subject matter

girlfriend and I watched "Pleasantville" last night and for a movie about the beauty of art cultivating nonconformity, it's ultimate message being that freedom will manifest itself in terms of slight changes to the existing world's aesthetics and nothing else was a lot more on the nose than the director probably intended

It's infinitely more on point than the season 1 episode where the supes are having to speak at an Evangelical youth event, which felt like some extremely mid-2000s commentary.

Yeah, this. The Boys, when it's on, it's really on. Most everything about the boys themselves is much weaker.

I'd forgotten about that episode, which is surprising because I felt that I recognised the exact set of evangelical movement they were parodying. A friend was involved in it and some of the details and colour felt just like what she described.

The marketing team completely ignoring Maeve's bisexuality and wanting her girlfriend to be more masculine/butch to not "confuse" the public was a sad chef's kiss.
