That’s a bit silly. Nolan can’t be blamed for the pandemic, and WB and Nolan were presumably hand-in-hand in the release strategy. Nolan is a uniquely reliable and bankable talent. One critical /box office misfire isn’t going to affect his trajectory at all.
If they'd released it on VOD for like $20 back in May it would have made a ton of money. The only reason this didn't happen is because Nolan is a purist who wanted his movie seen on the big screen, and he had the influence to ensure that happened.

The studio surely would have gone for the cash grab if it weren't a Nolan movie.

It was a massively bad call on his part to insist the film come to theaters only. That is at least on him.

Maybe WB are thinking long-term with Dune as a series with a cult following they can milk for years instead of a big box office.

I think this is the case, studios have been hunting for the next legacy franchise ever since Marvel went big.

It does seem to be roughly coloring in the same lines as Marvel's success, in that it's a big budget all-star adaptation that stays faithful to the source material. That might mean less now that it's the norm these days.

They may also be looking to siphon off some of the Star Wars money now that that franchise has hit oversaturation.

Nolan also gets a huge cut, like 20%, of the box office revenue.

The real problem is not waiting until loving next year.

The amount of PR and mystery that comes out of simmering in the pot a little longer. It's why Dune better break some goddamn records.

I rewatched The Prestige not too long ago and that's just an incredible movie, superbly acted, engaging from the very first scene. I feel like Nolan kind of peaked there and every film since has gradually become sloppier and more self-indulgent. The tight and economical pacing that defined his earlier work like Memento has totally vanished.

I had to handle an unsocialized parakeet yesterday, move it from a big cage to a smaller cage, for transport. It got away from us, and I had to corner it and oh-so-gently encompass it in my hands, and slowly and gently carry it to the smaller cage.

It was biting the webbing between my fingers the entire time, as hard as it could. I could feel as it clenched its jaw muscles over and over, trying to get a piece. But I had to stay steady and smooth and not hurt the poor, scared little birdie until I got it to the new cage.

I know what was in the Reverend Mother's pain box, when she tested Paul Atreides. It was an unsocialized parakeet, biting his fingers.

I think their MO these days is to shortlist a dozen or so indie feature directors from festival circuits, pick the one that's most useful for virtue-signaling on a given project, then strong-arm that person into creating the exact product they wanted to make in the first place as they offload all the action scenes to an in-house second-unit.

Brian Herbert would get like a Producer credit, I guess.

He’s never done the actual sculpting work.

But McF Toys has been in an odd place for years. Recently they’re coming back a bit. I got one of their newest Spawn figures and it was really well made and well articulated, but not as well sculpted as it used to be.

Also I think all the best sculpture left for NECA and other companies. So it’s a totally different team.
