I found another Villainess reincarnation manga. It's super short, just ended at 7 chapters. I Became a Villainess I can't wait for the villainess genre to start branching out more. The ones I've been finding are weirdly homogenous for how many of them bring magic into the mix. I wanna see someone come back and turn into an elf or demon or something. Really throw everyone for a loop.

They're all structured as parodies of the exact same thing (which was never actually as formalized as they portray, but still). The familiarity of the premise is part of the point, and the "twist" comes after that rather than before it. It's like... a knock-knock joke, or a limerick. If it didn't follow the exact same structure then it wouldn't even be the same genre anymore. Also, in case you haven't noticed, "villainess" is now a tag on mangadex so you can just search for all the villainess manga at once. For the record I tend to find that the Korean variants are less married to formalism. Clarste fucked around with this message at 01:00 on Sep 21, 2020 |

im just glad that the state of villainess reincarnation/reversal/isekai is in a healthy spot where authors feel free to play with their own ideas, rather than one author trying to monopolize the genre and throwing out dmcas why yes ive just heard of the omegaverse

Yeah, I just cant help wanting more that to off in strange directions like Villainess Reverses the Hourglass or Beware the Villainess or Villainess lvl 99 have. Reincarnated stuff is going well for now, we've got sword, spider, Dragon egg, vending machine, hot spring, slime, etc. And someone around here mentioned that Villainess is a genre that mangadex recognizes in here beforehand so I already knew about that but thanks for the reminder.

It is entirely possible that if the MC's family didn't go bankrupt, she would have grown up affluent and completely influenced by the grandmother; however, because she was dirt poor, the influence never really took hold. She was too grounded in reality. Nalin fucked around with this message at 03:19 on Sep 21, 2020 |

Hourglass is good because they make no bones that the MC is mean as gently caress, none of the justifications for cruelty that you find in shounen/seinen stories*, no fantasy that we could make everybody happy, no, this is a straight up competition for wealth and resources. *Alright there is a bit of that, but the MC acknowledges that getting manipulated into her past life's situation was as much her own failings as the manipulations by her rival, and besides, her enemy is currently a dumbass kid that is growing into a threat.

hello yes i would like to submit 2 that i have been reading about tuff ladies/empresses which are still quite early into their runs i guess i've become the villainous empress of a novel in which our hero gets jammed into the world of a romance novel she read through the body of the empress who slowly went nuts and became a tyrant 3 days before she gets killed by violent revolution. the lady and the beast in which our hero is the warrior-king founding empress of a nation reborn much later into her empire's rule as a plain ol noble and is forced to marry a guy who turned into a literal wolf. both of these take more of a dramatic slant than a comedy slant but they're sure appealin' to me. both in how the chars are strong as heck in an in-world sense and how much they are able to drive the story with their actions the lady and the beast's protag is weirdly unconventional in the sense that in that it never really addresses that she's like a 50+ year long ruling warrior-queen doin' the whole reborn thing, just that she's 'mature beyond her years' Fereydun fucked around with this message at 08:20 on Sep 21, 2020 |

yikes in the latter one the lady actually tries to gently caress the wolf (to get pregnant and fulfill a contract), except she had just beaten him into submission and he was not erect. that's the only reason why it didn't happen.

Beware the Villainess has such a generic title that I somehow missed this one entirely, assuming that I'd already read it before. Turns out I haven't, and it's easily the most readable one that isn't Bakarina!

Villainess reincarnation but it's an out of body experience as you come back as your little sister. Added drama can be sprinkled in throughout the story 'Was I such a piece of poo poo that I never noticed I had a sister last time?' 'Am I even real or more like a guardian angel?'

I second the recommendation for The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass. It helps that while Aria is mean, there's a good reason for that. She grew up dirt-poor and starving, and then was taken into the Roscente household where absolutely no one bothered to give her a chance and always looked down on her. Of course she's going to be bitter and cynical about everything. Despite it all, Aria doesn't cross the line into being a smug sociopathic rear end in a top hat that you see in a lot of garbage "getting revenge" isekai stories. What the story does really well is respect Aria's agency as well as avoid tired cliches from other "X person goes back in time" stories. Acquiring allies and resources is a slow uphill struggle, but it's always Aria driving the plot forward. It thankfully doesn't do that thing where the time traveler fixes all of her problems by hooking up with a hot and politically-powerful guy. In fact, the crown prince doesn't have much political clout since the aristocratic function holds all the power, so he's the one who ends up relying on Aria. It also avoids that other cliche where the main character gets all their wealth by opening up a perfume or clothing shop. Aria started her fortune by stockpiling sugar since she knows there'll be a shortage soon and then selling it to the aristocratic function for an absurd amount. Aria being shrewd and calculating is definitely the best part of the story.

That beast story manages to trigger the warning signs for "this will be creepy in bad way" and the warning signs for "this will be strange in a good way" in equal loudness. Another one that manges that is https://mangadex.org/title/46856/the-careful-empress Though after reading it the most likely possibility is the story never getting anywhere before the updates end. It's pretty clear where it's going. She'll fight with the lower nobles about control, undo the curse probably from the first prince's ghost or something maybe her mother's then as she gets to know Wolf Duke will have to choose between him and Totally Not the Prince in Disguise. She's going to end up as Empress again.

Mors Rattus posted:The beast story for me has basically become “well, this is clearly going somewhere dumb and possibly very bad, but you’ve committed to it and I want to see where you go” The part of the story that could have been the most objectionable to me was breezed through so I don't think this particular play on Beauty and the Beast is going down a bad road. Doubly so since going by the preview chapter The prince turns back to being human on full moons so the matter of an heir won't be further complicated. Really, for the available chapters it's a pleasant story purely because Astina/Martina is a fun character on her own and absolutely carries everything. There's some intrigue surrounding this whole reincarnation business and the other side characters are good too but as long as every chapter has moments of sass like this I'll keep reading. Tangentially related since I have wolves on the mind. There are a couple of shorts regarding men turned into beasts by Kui Ryoko of Dungeon Meshi fame The Beast from her anthology 'The Dragon's School is on the Top of the Mountain' which is a more straightforward re-imagining of Beauty and the Beast. and Wolves Tell no Lies from ' Seven Little Sons of the Dragon' about the woes of a modern day werewolf.

I think the general idea of the wholesome split is that the story doesn't try to justify slavery as morally correct or whatever. And/or it's not literal porn. It doesn't need to be 100% rated G imo.
