Rinkles posted:As I understand it, though XDEV has a staff, it's more of an initiative than a studio. It's a label the European branch gives to their games that are developed by external devs but get direct support from Sony. It's probably got some Psygnosis blood in it, but I think it's inaccurate to call it "formerly Liverpool Studio, formerly Psygnosis". But seriously, if people don't have the time to watch that Psygnosis vid and want a short breakdown ow how big a deal they were in the 90s and how much impact they had on the future of gaming, here: They basically were almost all of the European development scene - They co-created the first dev-kit software Psy-Q with SCEJ, which was chosen by Kutaragi and used by everyone under the sun to make games for PS1. So, without them there literally was no PS1. - They released about a dozen of the best games on the PS1 in like a 4 year span - They were almost so big at one point (and looking to get bigger) that despite being owned by Sony they started developing and releasing their titles like WipEout and DD for other platforms (N64/Sat), this was eventually shut the gently caress down by Sony as they came in hardcore fired the CEO and started to micromanage the whole operation. Otherwise they probably would've become bigger than Ubisoft or something. Studios formerly under the Psygnosis development or publishing portfolio that split off WHERE ARE THEY NOW?: - The Psygnosis ex-CEO went off and started Evolution, which was also gobbled up by Sony after he left. Evolution merged with Codemasters and is alive, if not well. - Liverpool/XDEV - Liverpool shuttered after releasing tons of WipEout/F1 (most other IPs were scrapped) games up to 2012. XDEV still intimately associated with Sony first party. - DMA Design made it out, became Rockstar North, now in charge of the biggest game series of all time. - Reflections (Destruction Derby) became GT Interactive and made the Driver series. GT went to Infograms, Infograms sold to Atari, and then GT was sold to Ubisoft as a dev collab. - Traveler's Tales hosed off to Sega to make bad sonic games before discovering a pot of gold with the Lego franchise. - Bizarre Creations (F1, Project Gotham Racing, Metro Street Racer, Blur, Geometry Wars, etc), eventually bought by Activision and destroyed. Bizarre spin-off studio of note would be Playground Games (Forza Horizon). - DICE was originally being published by Psygnosis for a bit, eventually made Battlefield and got bought by EA.

There's a lot of confusion going around on the Japanese internet about what will happen when you put a PS4 disc into a PS5. Have they been more clear about it in English?

It could work like xbox 360 bc where the disc is authentication only and it has to download the game, I guess.

Yodobashi, one of the biggest electronics retailers in Japan, ended their first pre-order lottery. For the normal version it was 40x their initial stock and for the diskless version it was 90x (If I'm understanding how this reporting works properly). I guess even in Japan, most people have decided they don't need optical discs.

It’s very unclear what it means until we see what the initial stocks of the digital and disc versions were. IGN’s referral link click-throughs registered something like 50x as many people buying the disc version as the digital version. Not scientific, but pretty compelling

There's probably a lot of reasons why Japanese customers would prefer digital more than America too. Better internet infrastructure in key cities and many titles not getting physical releases are a few of them. Maybe their secondary games market isn't as good and physical games don't receive the same kind of deals? Also the economic downturn could mean people are making choices they wouldn't otherwise make, including saving an extra 100 on the console. Japanese consumers are quirky in a lot of ways relative to american gamers too. I remember seeing that something like 80% of Japanese customers use local coop play on Switch and it's <15% in America, largely due to being more spread out. Impossible to compare what it means without more context. Shammypants fucked around with this message at 07:04 on Sep 23, 2020 |

The idea was you stay on regular copper out to a substation that then goes onto a fibre cable from there. The problem in practice is that unless you live reasonably close to the Node (<1km-ish) you're not getting better than ADSL speeds because of physics. The fix is better ideas like Fibre to the Curb, where you get a box in your house that connects and powers a device out in the street to convert from your copper network at home into the fibre cable running down the street.

You already download patches automatically on PS4 when you put a disc in so chances are that you'll just install and patch? Or straight up activate a download that needs the disc as auth measure. I'm really interested on this too since my PS4 backlog is so big that I'll need to catch up on a PS5 anyways.

Amazon hosed up the PS5 listing for Amazon US, so it's not charting anywhere, but a quick glance at every other region's yearly sales categories shows the PS5 outcharting the Xbox in both categories. Seems like Xbox has some stock woes to contend with, plus the usual dynamics. Makes me a little bit hopeful that those next waves of PS5s will be substantial amounts. On the DualSense topic, I read that some think you'll need a DualShock4 to play PS4 games on PS5. Other than ones with a PS5 update I mean. Is that true? If it was, one positive side effect might be the DualShock 4 staying in production for years longer. Since now if you play a PS3 game you may have a dead battery, and the controllers are like relics from the forgotten age. I also wonder how DualSense will fare as a PC controller. If steam will add support for it right away, etc.

I've been trying to stay positive and hope that they have a solution for storage this generation, but I'm becoming a little more worried as we get closer to release. Some install sizes have been revealed, and it's looking like we're getting 50GB-ish plus for a AAA game. The 825GB SSD will get chewed up pretty quickly at that rate! (Rest In Peace COD players) My solution to that for the PS4 was a relatively cheap 4TB HDD, but that is of course not an option here as a HDD won't be fast enough to run games, and a 4TB external SSD would cost about as much as the system. I'm still looking forward to the new system but not looking forward to the potential game juggling.
