That Tucker mention got me tripping down the buyout rabbithole and here's a funny bit of trivia

If Lecavalier had not been bought out, this would have been the last year of his 11 year $7.5 million contract he got in 2009

Instead Tampa is still paying him ~$2 million a year until 2027

Yeah, this has been more or less clear for the past few weeks. But, Russia don't care so KHL don't care so they'll go through the season even if they'll be playing with VHL teams by the end of it.

Edit: Liiga is also pretty hosed, but they still have a week or so before they should start playing, so I can see them just postponing the season by a week or two, riding out their quarantines and then trying to put a very strict "Don't go anywhere except home and the rink" policy into place.

From the Athletic:

quote:

The Golden Knights’ current plan is to sign Lehner to a long-term contract, and what that means for Fleury is still up in the air. Fleury has a $7 million cap hit and a no-trade clause that allows him to list 10 teams he can’t be traded to.

Speaking with Fleury on the phone from his home in Las Vegas, he said he doesn’t know what is going to happen.

“I want to stay in Vegas,” he told The Athletic Wednesday afternoon. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I’ve loved every moment since I got here.”

Fleury emphasized that he is not seeking a trade, and if it were up to him he would finish his career in Vegas.

“This team means a lot to me, and the city has been so good to me,” Fleury said. “The fans, and (owner Bill Foley) have been so awesome. It’s a great team, and I thought when I came here that maybe I could retire here. I wanted to end my career here.”

Even if Vegas does end up signing Lehner to a long-term deal, Fleury still isn’t asking to be traded.

“I get along great with Robin, so I think it would be all right,” Fleury said. “I still love to play. I don’t think I just want to be a backup, but I’ll practice hard, try to play well, and hopefully get some games, but it always comes down to the coach’s decision. Whatever happens, happens. And that’s fine. I’ll just try my best to come to camp in good shape and do well from there.”

Took a glance at his wiki, and he now has 3 kids between 1 and 6 years old, and jeez his wife was also his high school girlfriend. Pretty cool that their relationship is a rare case of that working out so well.

I wonder if he'd consider retiring if the only other option was being traded to another city. Uncertainty about Covid will linger until he's 37+ years old, quarantining himself away from his kids next season would be awful, and he won rings and got paid.

1. Take out Taylor Hall's stronghold in New Jersey and Edmonton.
2. Dismantle the global old boys network.

Yeah it sucks as a Vegas fan, he's a great dude, been nothing but loyal, but it very much not up to being a 1a goalie any more and is paid too much to also pay a second goalie.

I honestly hope they eat the cost of paying both of them, even if it's definitely not the right move for the team.

Hornqvist is rad and I think he'll easily keep having 20 goal (paced) seasons on a team that builds the powerplay around him/cycling the puck rather than rushing.
Sure he's not much of a skater and he takes a beating but he's also stupidly fit so I think he'll play the contract out and a be a powerplay boon for the Panthers all the while and as much as I ragged on him for not being able to keep up with Crosby/Malkin anymore this is not the sort of return I'd wanted for him at all

I'd have rather seen cap space sitting empty

Guys like Hornqvist seem to age ok. Holmstrom was good well into his 30s. So I'm sure Hornqvist will be a decent powerplay specialist that isn't a liability 5v5.
