I beat the first "Year" in Atomicrops (years are basically progressive difficulty increases for new runs) and it's pretty fun. I wish there was more nuance/strategy to the farming side of things. By around Summer/Fall I was just spamming my seeds/pickaxes wherever I could while struggling to fight off waves of enemies. I'm trying to focus on taking it slower now on year 2 to put some more thought into my crops, since there are bonuses for planting a 2x2 square of the same crop and then fertilizing them all, plus trees are 2x2 - so I want to focus on separate 2x2 plots I think instead of one giant messy field like I had before.

The permanent upgrades are nothing earth-shattering but it's things like extra starting Fight or Farm stat, faster movement, and adding a few seconds to the day/dusk timer. I also unlocked a... cat trader? And now I can buy cats in between runs, and if I get 3 similar cats I can merge them into a higher tier cat and I'm very confused by it, no idea what they do.

I'm enjoying it and still playing but there's something about it that hasn't clicked with me yet. I agree that some of the guns just feel bad, and I think the weapon breaking system combined with how expensive weapon upgrades are kind of sucks - the weapon upgrades should be permanent for that entire run or something. Especially in Spring/Summer when you don't have a ton of cashews to spare.

Winter is just a final boss fight, but it has a kind of clever gimmick that took me a while to catch on to and it was a neat trick when I got it so I won't spoil it.

It needs more variety in the runs, though. Despite the artifact-type items with unique passives (none of which are particularly game-breaking) every run has ended up feeling pretty similar. There are four biomes (with a higher tier version of each one), the enemies in each one are not significantly different from one another, the weapon pool is pretty limited.

It's kind of weird about the way does the whole "dating/marriage" system. They're essentially just different upgrade paths, but once you go far enough down one path you see a very short marriage ceremony (like 2 lines of text about why they're marrying you) and they follow you around as an npc/combat pet. Then a couple seasons in you unlock Polygamy and can marry as many of them as you want, and some of the marriage ceremony descriptions are a little weird like someone marrying you because it's their only ticket out of the village  Nothing really terrible yet, just sort of clumsy.

If it was an Early Access game I'd say it's a phenomenal start, it's not marked that way but I'm hoping they're planning to add significantly more variety through DLC or patches either way because there's a lot to like about it!

I know I didn't end the run with a full 8 rings that I've heard of.

Also learned the power of on demand statue form via Calcify. drat is that good for dealing with Sun Golems and other elemental bullshit.

i think that Fane is the final boss, there's nothing afterword if you fight him. all of the rings are found in branches before that fight. i believe there are 9 rings per run. the super bosses are in the underworld/maelstrom levels. i'm not sure how all of that stuff works tho.

Spells are massively powerful overall

atomicrops is cool even though I kinda suck at it.

i got to year three though and its just way too annoying to actually plant your crops. it makes these little plants spawn that spit at you machinegun style all around your farm, and they spawn way too much compared to the moles and make the boss fights and night time stuff a nightmare. it also feels like the day is shorter in year 3, which isn't super fun cause I like exploring

ive unlocked all but one character and it seems like the starting character is the best one overall. there's a very cute one whose gimmick is kind of annoying and makes dodging projectiles very hard.

beyond that the game is very fun, a couple of the weapons kinda suck, but since you get two to pick from every day its not too bad. there's a couple of boss fights where I feel like I got hosed by the weapon choice though. like the gatling gun or parsniper rifle will tear up a boss very fast, but the sawnoff shotgun is basically worthless. the music and art are amazing also, the boss fight themes are very catchy.

a pro-tip is that you can actually get the trees to do the 2x2 merge thing also, and they turn into a big ol tree that gives you fruit that's worth a lot and spawns quite often.

Some weapons aren't that great at first, but like the shotgun they can become really good if you can afford to stack a couple upgrades on them, so they're more useful as picks on later days. Some others are really good in some zones/VS some enemy crop invasions and bad VS others (which is just going to be a trial and error thing to figure out who you're going to fight and when) -- for example the sniper rifle is a slam-pick for me if I'm going to the desert in the west or if I'm going to be facing a boss because it has great single-target damage, but the eastern plains have a bunch of tiny low-health enemies which are awkward and slow to fight with it. I'm liking this game a lot more than I thought it would, to be honest -- it was a confusing start (and I somehow forgot I could fertilize crops for my first three or four runs!) but now that the pieces are falling into place I can tell the mechanics were given a lot of thought.

They could probably make it a little more clear, but cats are entirely a joke/cosmetic upgrade and just a sink for your Cornucopia after you've unlocked everything else.

I still think the shotguns are underwhelming. Compared to the other weapons, the damage output is not enough to justify it, upgrades or not. The SMG/sniper/minigun/flamethrower all scale up really good with upgrades and also are better from the start.

Year 3 really ramps up in difficulty, you get these plant turret enemies that constantly pop up in your field in greater and greater numbers as the year goes on and they shoot repeatedly like the heavy weapon rabbit guys. And when you kill them, they just respawn after like... maybe 8 seconds. It becomes extremely difficult to move around. I think as you rise in difficulty the slowdown of the minigun becomes a bigger deal, but at base difficulty it's essentially just the best weapon.

It's not a roguelike in the classic sense, but the new Inkle game - Pendragon - might appeal to some people in the thread. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1240050/Pendragon/

I've only played for a couple of runs, but it seems to have dynamically generated locations that change each playthrough, and you can complete a run on the easiest difficulty in under an hour so it's not a huge time commitment if things start going wrong.

It feels something like a mobile game tbh, with the actual gameplay reminding me of Into The Breach or Hitman GO maybe - with a tabletop kind of vibe. Each encounter is essentially a tactical puzzle that you can either fight through or get to the exit (but some of the encounters also change if you wait it out - so if you don't charge into the attack, you might find an enemy gets scared and runs off, or can be talked down)

I'm pretty skeptical about the combination of early access + indie localization, but $9 is a pretty reasonable price point. I'll give a shot and report back.

e: it's incredibly janky, and the control scheme is basically trying to re-invent RTS controls from scratch. the translation is serviceable at best (you can mostly tell what's going on but it's stiff and unnatural, and some menu options are incorrectly labeled). there might be a decent game buried in there somewhere but I don't feel charitable enough to dig for it.

It took a few tries, but I got an Atomicrops win on year 3.

Items that slow bullets become really strong on year 3 because of the plant turrets that start showing up. If you can stack 2 bullet slow effects their bullets slow to a crawl, which removes the main year 3 difficulty spike.
I still think shotguns are kinda bad, cattling gun is an absolute monster and when you get enough fighting stat it shreds every boss in the game(that can be damaged by weapons).

Bad news is that Spelunky 2 will temporarily not have online co-op when it launches on Steam next Tuesday, which may be for the best because the online is really hosed up PS4 right now. Local co-op and arena mode will be still be available.

Good news is that online should be ready within a couple weeks, along with (previously unannounced) PC and PS4 crossplay. After that, they're going to work on implementing an online option for the competitive multiplayer modes. Also man I caved and got it on PS4 and this game is so loving good. Further update: I've tentatively fixed my crashing issues in Going Under by turning off several graphics options. I went about 22 minutes, 3 floors, 1 death w/o a crash.

It'll be a while before I can give an opinion on the game, but first impressions.

Game controls well. Easy on the eyes, I'd recommend gamepad - the rightstick controls the camera and it just plays pretty natural with it. Wary of crashes as I turn graphics settings back on one at a time.

Forgot about that. There's a pretty big gameplay difference though; in local co-op you have a "leader" character with a flag and the camera follows them around and you have to stay grouped together. In online, everyone gets their own screen and can wander off anywhere in the level

I had a lot of fun with the gameplay in Star Renegades but man, after the first clear the final boss was replaced by Wynn and it's a huge difficulty wall compared to the first boss. I've splatted like four runs that otherwise had no issue getting to the last planet and it's all because of the two summons and the relentless AoE attacks that kill your escort mission bomb, instantly triggering a game over.

Cinara

Run Marksman + Saboteur + Aegis, unlock the item that lets light attacks target the backline and Saboteur can instantly break any enemy at the start of the fight and Marksman deletes them. Get either of the healer supports if offered, I really like Empath with this combo to boost the Marksman damage, and just about anyone as your 5th. Commando has really good breaking also along with solid damage and can be run frontline. Combined with Saboteur and the Shield Throw from Aegis you have some of the strongest stagger possible with great targeting options.

Aegis will be able to defend the bomb to keep it safe also which helps a ton on the final mission.

My run with that combo had the final boss attacking only a couple times total the entire fight.

Truspeaker
Jan 28, 2009

Aegis is definitely the best and most important character. Guard is just too useful, and if you give every single armor and shield station to them you can, especially with shield regen equipment, most of the game is really easy. I've gotten to 50 armor on aegis and at that point all those multi hit aoe attacks end up doing zero damage to your whole party with fortress.

Once you unlock the devastator weapon (which is even one of the cheaper ones I think?), a lot of characters can fill that saboteur role (+ stagger time, +quickness, light attacks hit anywhere). Supposedly the +shield regen stuff is going to affect more skills in the next patch, so there will be more options for healers too. My last run the heal robot was the final boss and I thought it would be real difficult but the empath + aegis took care of business.

Hackan Slash

Hit it until it's not a problem anymore
Star renegades is all about being able to deny enemies actions whether by stagger, stun, or death.

To build on what was said before the sab with the peacekeeper implant is a top tier, because it can stagger or stun anyone. I don't really like the empath as a healer without the plus healing gear unlocked, and she's bad as a starting member because she doesn't get online until late. Speaking of gear unlocks, it's best if you only unlock the peacekeeper, +healing, and rattle gear. Everything else dilutes the pool too much.

But yeah, the game really only gets difficult in the later levels when there's tons of enemies in the back row doing aoe damage. Having your own aoe or attacks that can reach the back row is imperative. I love the archon not for his heal, but for the fact he has an a fast aoe with decent stagger. If you can get +stagger gear on him he will definitely carry.

Oh, another random thing that the game doesn't make clear is you can stagger someone who's already broken. You can waste moves hitting people with small stagger attacks. I like to have big staggers and then attacks that don't stagger at all like flurry or aoe.

The only real party composition check is you need to be able to burn down the first behemoths 40+ armor. Also, I would look at the unlock guides for the 4 hidden classes.

RoboCicero
Oct 22, 2009
Thank you for the tips. Reach is definitely the issue here, I forgot that the stun / stagger moves I had couldn't hit the back row.

ZypherIM
Nov 8, 2010

"I want to see what she's in love with."

There is a bunch of gear with +stagger which makes a big difference. And like hackan says, you can keep applying stagger after an enemy breaks, up to their limit. So a big thing about playing is not wasting stagger chances on low impact ones. There is also some +shield regen equipment that makes a big difference on the shield regen abilities.

Personally I like empath over the heal robot, though if you stacked a lot of stagger onto the robot that'd be a perfectly strong approach.

Making sure your initial team some some sort of armor damage is about the only required thing afaik.
