Tenochtitlan, looking east.
The New Pornographers might be up there. Mass Romantic -> Electric Version -> Twin Cinema.

Also Bjork if we stretch the definition of 'indie' a bit (in the UK her records came out on One Little Indian, in the US on Elektra).

edit: Wait no, it's Joanna Newsom.

My only complaint about Twin Cinema is that The Bleeding Heart Show is not the last track on the album. That's like the song you play at the end of the world.

My biggest problem with that it starts fading out before the song just comes to a conclusion anyway.

Pick one or the other, New Pornographers!

Their last album was really good, and definitely a stronger effort overall than their last few (which weren't bad, but tended to lose steam after a side or so).

The new Fleet Foxes is so good, which isn’t surprising but I think he just keeps getting better and better or at least as I get older and listen to indie music less, I appreciate the style of arrangements he’s been gravitating towards and the like modern classical and art pop influences. The sort of unexpectedly overt Steve Reich style strings on ‘Cradling Mother, Cradling Woman’ are so good and that track also samples an unused Brian Wilson vocal take I guess, but it still sounds very Fleet Foxes.

Idk where to post about the new Oneohtrix Point Never, but it’s real good and more ‘indie’ than most of his other stuff, I guess aside from Black Snow, but that was a very poppy single on an album of weird and unpoppy music. https://youtu.be/MYr5MypHAhQ
I actually like this track more, but I love all three tracks he put out, one is like 22 seconds long though. But this one is more like R plus 7 or something with the lo fi tape warble that the other track has https://youtu.be/EH0pcBZMfEg

It's definitely a dense album that is going to take a few listens to really fully digest, but I felt the same way about Age of Adz which is my favorite album.

There are definitely some absolutely stellar standout tracks like "Make Me an Offer I Can't Refuse," "Ativan," and "The Ascension." It's interesting that the singles he released leading up to the album aren't even the best on the album, but I guess that's one way not to let people don't.

I will say though that limiting the number of instruments to just a synth and drum machine has resulted in some of the songs sounding kind of same-y.

Edit: Adding "I wanna die happy" to the list of standout tracks
Edit: And "Landslide". Or, "LAAAAAAAAAAAANDSLIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE"

It's a piece of JUNK!
It's going to be hard for me to really let go of Big Orchestral Sufjan. I loved the balance he struck on Adz. He's obviously no stranger to minimalism, as some of his best songs are simple banjo-plucking things, but for a whole album it can be a little frustrating. Except Carrie & Lowell which obviously merited that approach because of the subject matter. In truth there are actually tons of layers here, but since they're almost all synth, it's a little hard to pick them out.

It's still early. We'll see.

I like to lurk in here, and I love listening to everyone's favs, but I never see enough love for my fav, Andrew Bird :colbert:

He's pretty low-key indie, I guess, sometimes leaning more folk, sometimes a little funkier. But if the Fleet Foxes are indie then Andrew Bird is, too. I'm a sucker for strings in my music, and he's got a pretty unique style: lots of strumming or plucking the violin strings, looping effects (these are super cool live—he uses a series of foot peddles to operate), and his (possibly annoying?) whistling. He probably edges out Sufjan as my favorite artist, even post- Carrie and Lowell.

Here are a few of my favorites of his:

I thought "My Finest Work Yet" was a bit hyperbolically titled, but possibly my favorite since Armchair Apocrypha. Most of his mid 2010s-era stuff is good, but I don't quite recall it all. Eggs and Armchair stand out to me because they're what I got into 15-ish years ago.

Yeah, it's a little bit of a bummer that he reinvents himself each album. Armchair Apocrypha is probably my personal favorite. Still, I can find something to like on each one so far. I've seen him play live five times, and I don't think he's ever played something that was older than two years.

I totally forgot he was going to be on Fargo!

It's absolutely a contender for album of the year. It's so loving good. Especially "Fallorun"

My favorite Andrew Bird story is also about Ken Ishibashi (aka Kishi Bashi). Ken was in music school studying the violin when Andrew Bird came for a visit, and Ken feeling like a cocky 20 year old or whatever proceeded to challenge Andrew to a violin-off or whatever. Needless to say, Andrew destroyed him.

Yeah I saw him around then, or I guess before 2010 because I was like 16, at Radio City Music Hall and it’s really mind blowing. Like, not only can he play well as a solo violinist, but with a loop pedal he can be as lush as a symphony while also playing beautiful pizzicato stuff and on top of all that, he’s also a whistling virtuoso. I mean I’m serious, I’ve never heard anyone whistle as well as he does, and he does it while he plays violin.

exquisite tea posted:

This is also true, I took cello lessons briefly in high school before I realized that you need to be pretty rich to play any stringed instrument like that, but even though I was able to play very basic stuff, when I tried to play a single note on a violin it felt like it was impossible not to make horrible screeching noises.
