lol goddamn. i "blew up" my old escort once doing stupid poo poo like that as a teenager but it was just a freeze plug that popped out and dumped all the coolant. figured the same thing would have happened there. nope, that engine is toast

shy boy from chess club posted:Man I didn't even consider it might have nitrous as well. I thought maybe there was so much fuel that it took up any room for air and might have put the fire out but not likely if it had oxygen available from nitrous too. It probably was just too much combustion to mechanically contain that split the block in half which is crazy to think about. Hopefully there's enough evidence of what happened and they look into it, such a crazy explosion I found an article (I think on Truck Trend) about the build, it definitely had nitrous. Vanagoon posted:Found this video of someone blowing up a 5S-FE in an old Camry. That's one way to put in a one shot rev limiter. That thing had to have underlying issues to cause that though, I thought those were cockroaches?

First off, I don't understand why a 6500rpm redline is particularly impressive. Second, I don't get why he keeps slamming it down gears, is he purposefully trying to break it? I now understand why one of the most bulletproof engines of all time died with that few miles...

Makes me feel better about my standard ratcheting jack and also I really would like to get one of the aluminum jacks, in particular the way it failed makes me feel safer.

the problem with the aluminum post style is the base has less area, so they are more likely to tip. nice to see that they fail safer vertically.

The impressive thing isn't the engine's ability to rev to 6500rpm - it's that it revved relatively smoothly for a 150k mile car right up to the redline, then instantly self-destructed when it hit 6550 or so. (yes, it was probably on its way to failure well before then, and "instantly after crossing the redline" was a coincidence - but it makes for a great video) STR posted:That thing had to have underlying issues to cause that though, I thought those were cockroaches? The 5S-FE had oil sludge issues if it went way too long without an oil change or PCV maintenance. They're generally good, reliable motors, but that can really catch people who think "it's a late 90s/early 00s Toyota, it must be able to take infinite abuse! 20k oil change intervals sound about right."

The Camry video is so perfect oh my god. Grandma probably never took it over 3000 so it blew up on the first 0-60 run exactly at redline lol

And then once they upgrade to a slightly never Toyota, some entrepreneur will buy them and sell them to Africa or somewhere else on the globe where they'll likely go on to do another half a million. Land Cruiser Prados from that era are regularly sold for way higher than you'd think with half a million kilometers on the odometer and they're generally pretty hard to destroy mechanically. The slightly newer common rail diesel has some oil filtering and injector related issues which do need to be taken care of, but once sorted it should be good for Hilux mileage despite being far better built, better equipped and better handling cars with a more complex transmission. You just don't get that kind of reliability from any automaker these days.

Pretty sure when it chucked a rod the oil filter got knocked off with a piece of the block. You can see the crank throw just below it in the pic.
