They say that every minute, 500 hours of video is uploaded to obscure Google property "Youtube.com".

Now I don't know if that's even remotely true, because if anybody could just flat-out lie to us about internet statistics it'd be the eldritch horror Google, but let's assume it is true for a moment. Of those 500 hours being uploaded every minute, how many of them are videos like this:

Linked because WTF 10 Hours of the final boss music from Super Mario RPG???

There's an entire channel of videos like this here but it's hardly the only source. Some times they're "just" a half hour or hour. And they aren't just for video games; here's an entire hour of some of the sad cello music from Joker looped over and over. Here's the same thing for Inception. There are countless other examples and in all of them I'm just left wondering, why the hell do these videos exist?

It's not just that they artificially inflate the number of hours uploaded to Youtube- I know that they don't really make up a meaningful percentage of those 500 hours. It's more that I'm trying to understand what exactly people are doing with these videos. It's not as if the ability to automatically and repeatedly play one music file hasn't existed for, oh, coming up on fifty years or so now. And modernly we have both automated and curated playlists that go functionally forever, so these extended tracks must have deep personal meaning for people, deep enough to hear hundreds of times in a row, during which they do stuff so important that ripping a file and downloading VLC or something would just distract too much. They need that boss fight music, streaming, uninterrupted, for ten straight loving hours.

Why!?!? What the hell are people doing that they need to repeat a short piece of music 300 times as they do it? Is it a long-haul driving thing? Do truckers need to feel like they're winning dozens of consecutive RPG battles to stay awake? Sex stuff seems obvious but also bizarre in its own right. Are people really having that many tantric sex sessions to individual tracks from Street Fighter?

I pose this question to you then: what "extended" music tracks can you / do you listen to on Youtube, and what the hell are you doing during that time?

I've listened to 10 hour versions of tracks that I've had stuck in my head. Usually don't make it 10 hours tho. But I just like having the song on repeat as long as necessary to overexpose it to my brain so I stop thinking about it all the time. The thing that makes these versions different is that they often seamlessly loop.

When we discovered 10 hour videos, my friends would sometimes throw on versions of funny or bad songs as background noise while we do other stuff irl, until it gets too annoying and we change the track. I'm pretty sure I've sat through at least 5 hours of this track total for instance:

I also run D&D sometimes and while I use playlists now, when I first started DMing I would play 10hr versions of bombastic orchestral songs as background music for combat scenes. I prefer a more varied mix of songs now but I bet a lot of DMs still do that. Like using this long repeated version of a hollow knight song for fighting a vampire in his crypt.

blaise rascal

"Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Pearl...."
Haha, these videos are made exactly for me. My music-listening habits are such that if I encounter a song I like, I will listen to it on repeat for hours.

Here is one I've listened to all the way through, then had to restart back at the beginning, multiple times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_palSgKvFKk

Also, seconding the usefulness of these long videos for D&D. Even if it's just sound effects, having them in the background is a lot more fun than playing in silence.

(by the way op, did you see this thread? I made progress on the cloud game based on your idea: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3941344)

I'll admit D&D combat is a sensible use. I have DM'd some 4-hour boss fights in my day.

Also, why can't we actually embed videos? Did some bad actors take advantage?

There's no reason you can't, I was just being overly cautious. Loading a ten hour long video you're probably only gonna watch 18 seconds of if at all seemed weird.
