i am re-reading the raven tower right now and it is very good

i looked this up and it's an anne leckie. did anyone here like ancillary justice because I thought it was super boring with a gender gimmick to make people think it was brilliant writing. also everyone's names were super confusing

i liked ancillary justice. the titular character was well written imo. didnt care for the sequels, tho

raven tower was decent, but very light reading. it was neat how practical and transactional the gods/worship functioned

also youre a gimmick

I thought it was great, at it's best when it was focusing on stuff other than the gender themes, where it could get a bit fourth wall breaking (not that they were bad, just that it was most eye-opening when it wasn't in your face). I loved all the stuff about the main characters identity.

Sequels were very meh.

I devoured the Ancillary books as well as Provenance, they're like, up there with the Culture novels for me. Different style for sure, but same sort of deep worldbuilding and actually a better idea of how alien civilizations would interact with a human space empire. The other three books in the setting expand it a lot. I'm hella queer and the gender stuff was actually pretty neat and inclusive to me.

i kind of liked star wars d20, dark/light side force points are neat. the hp/wound and armor stuff is a little easier for some people to wrap their heads around too

this is pretty much how I feel about the series. I liked the sequels but felt like they should have been condensed into one book instead.

reading Eon by greg bear & this character Lanier is repeatedly described as not caring about sex but earlier he hired an escort as the first thing after returning from space and now he's super horny again. seems like he cares a lot about sex to me :raise:

but seriously wtf

quote:

Sexual passion had seldom dominated Lanier; his drives were normal enough, but he had always been able to ignore them, or control them in inappropriate situations. His two-year celibacy on the Stone had been less a hardship for him than it might have been for others. Nevertheless, he had never been hornier in his life than he was at this peaceful moment.

Despite the advantages, he had always felt faintly shamed of his lack of masculine anguish, as if it made him some sort of cold fish. Now the passion was upon him with a vengeance. It was all he could do to keep from stealing back through the curtain and fondling Farley. The desire was both funny and agonizing. He felt like a pubescent teenager, sweaty with need and unsure what to do about it.

the weird thing is so far there hasn't been any sex scenes (fade to black).

it's just this guys weird characterization. tbh I'm not sure if it's the author doing it on purpose, cause those are the only mentions of sex
