It's a great film and even though it takes place during the early 1970's it occurs in an economic climate almost identical to the US in 2020.

I’ve been watching a poo poo load of Comicbook Kayfabe which led me down a comic book documentary kick. Not just that but the creative choices to blend the subject with the style were so solid. Modern "topic" docs could learn a lot from it. I just watched Gianfranco Rosi's new movie Notturno and it's almost as good as Fire at Sea. It's much more sprawling since it takes a look at the small moments of daily life by multiple Middle Eastern conflict zones, but just like Fire it has some of the best pictures ever committed to film. It's a wonderful, languid ride and the sound design is incredible. Really sad I had to watch it at home instead of a theatre, but it's so so good at using small moments to speak for much larger ones.

Popping in to recommend Netflix's My Octopus Teacher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s0LTDhqe5A It's a beautiful film that's more of a spiritual experience than a science doc. A man dove with the same octopus every day for a year, and recorded everything. You pretty much see her entire life. It was so moving to watch this strange alien creature go from inking and hiding at first, to holding the filmmaker's hand and resting on his chest by the end. If I have one issue, it's that the "line you can't cross" he talks about in the trailer isn't well-defined. At two points, the octopus is attacked by sharks, and he doesn't intervene. I understand why he doesn't help, but it's just not consistent with him also feeding her and helping her hunt with his presence (When about to pounce on a lobster, she positions herself so the camera is blocking off escape). Then at the very end of her life, when she's too weak to move and can't fight off the tiny fish biting her, he still hangs back. This is an animal with intelligence comparable to a cat or dog, dying alone and in pain. If it were me, I'd at least have tried to comfort her in those last moments. It's not like he was hesitant to pet her before. All that said, it's still a great film and very powerful. Not ashamed to admit I cried. (You probably will too.)

In January I met this filmmaker who is also a professor in Northwestern’s school of journalism and I ended up telling him he reminded me of a friend of mine that he ended up knowing as well. Anyways, he was at the bar as part of a documentary he was making about the closing of Youngstown, OH’s only daily newspaper and the hole that would be left by it. And apparently it made Youngstown the largest city in the US without a daily newspaper. It’s a good little doc, and I’m in it! I’ll agree with that. Netflix seem to be in a rut where they need every true crime thing to have a gimmick now, regardless if that affects the narrative. The stuff on YouTube from a year ago about this case was a more interesting watch and has access to the same footage. The social media stuff was loving lame when they don’t tell you the context of it or make any kind of commentary.

The only thing I liked about that particular documentary was that it managed to tell its story completely through body cam footage, news reports, and social media posts/texts. I always enjoy documentaries that kind of immerse you in the topic without having talking heads and narrators telling you their very biased opinion of what happened. Obviously it has its flaws too in that there’s not a lot of nuance that can be conveyed in that kind of documentary and this was the perfect example of that. The OJ chase 30 for 30 was great in that regard. Perhaps the best example of that type of doc.

The OJ 30 For 30 is fantastic, as it took a story everyone knew (or at least thought they knew) and showed you the context of the day around it from a sports point of view, which I had no idea was so crazy. It was expertly edited. The Watts doc took something awful that happened that some people knew, but I'm guessing most didn't, and decided because there was a bunch of publicly accessible video they could tell the story like that and just jammed it all together hoping it would work. And oops, better trim this stuff out from the beginning because if you see that then there's not much else worth watching it for. The social media and text conversation stuff was just cheap timefiller because due to the rules they set out for themselves, there's no real context for it and you're confined to video someone is taking specifically to shill MLM crap with zero objective commentary. I couldn't even compare the two except in a 'this is an example of how to do it well, and this is an example of how not to'. I have no issues with taking an alternate approach to making something as it can be a real eye opener in some cases, but the Watts thing is just a gimmick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xfg861hO-Ag This is the first of 3 parts of an amateur YouTube person who had access to the same stuff and did a better job a year earlier because they aren't trying to force a narrative. Yeah, I've been trying to catch as many good NK docs as possible lately and this has been the highlight so far. If it was a movie I wouldn't believe half the stuff that happens in it. Kinda crazy how much access they got, it's like a legit spy thriller. I really, really hope people don't sleep on this one.

After a long road to get made and find a distubutor, the documentary about the Church of the SubGenius is finally available on Amazon, Apple TV etc and after having seen it, even ignoring my pro-“Bob” tendencies, it’s a really lovely, thoughtful, well made documentary and I am not sure what our little UFO Death Cult did to deserve to be the subject of such a polished and nice film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJdJEEZvhsA (Yours truly shows up in the background of some of the X Day shots and only tonight did I even learn that I am in a movie and that’s a lot of fun)

This is such a great doc, possibly my favorite of Herzog's: Little Dieter Needs to Fly https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145046/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 About Dieter Dengler, a german immigrant who became a US pilot in the Vietnam War and survived being shot down and a pow for 6 months. If you ever need a something earnestly inspirational but not sappy, check it out. Somewhat subdued stylistically for Herzog. Yeah, I was blown away how much they were able to film with actual cameras, I was expecting way more of it to be hidden camera stuff, which were the most tense scenes in the whole thing. It's amazing two people who were essentially amateurs were able to keep their cool and just lie on the fly so convincingly.
