MOBAs are inherently social because it is a game that is impossible to play without a team. It's not like FF14 where you can play solo and do quests if you just avoid raids - if you play the game in any capacity, you're part of a team. MOBAS are strictly unlike every other multiplayer game in that there is a HUGE amount of social responsibility when you go into every single game. Call of Duty, you go in with whatever weapons you want, run around kill people. You play Dota, you HAVE to take into consideration what the rest of your team is doing. Fighting over who is going to what lane is HUGE. If someone on your team picks a hard carry, you CAN'T pick a second one, even if you want to, otherwise you're just going to lose. You can't just queue up solos so you can drop in your favorite zone and die immediately - every single game you get a team and you have to work with that team in a major capacity.

I brought them up mainly to counterpoint the idea that the social game is "in" right now a la Among Us, because the massive popularity of LoL/Dota is representative that they have always been "in"

So Counter Strike is social? I gave that example for a reason. Seems weird you ignored it.

I don't think having a pre-made team counts as being social. And playing MOBAs or Cstrike with randoms is the most toxic thing in the world.

I thought about mentioning Fall Guys earlier but only as another example of a game that isn't what we're talking about. You play with other people but have nothing to do with them besides bumping into them.

Which is good for that game's design, but doesn't mean other people don't want other things. That being how that game works best doesn't mean its a universal truth of all gaming designs or models which share little with Fall Guys.

engaging with othe rplayers doesnt count except in the specific way im thinking of where you type into a lfg channel "lfg sm cath need tank and healz" once every 3 minutes for 4 hours until you get a group where no one says a single word until the trash pull just before the final boss where the tank dies and flames the healer and leaves and you have to stop playing because u cant sit around for another hour looking for a tank at 1am.

Yeah I ignored it because it's a bad example that has nothing to do with what my post was about. In Counterstrike, you can buy whatever gun you want, you can go wherever you want, and that is basically the accepted model of play, just like it is in Call of Duty, or Team Fortress 2, or Killing Floor 2, or Battlefield, or Valorant, or Apex Legends, or Rainbow Six Siege, or Fortnite, or PUBG, or any other game where you're given teammates. It's not about having teammates. It's about having no choice but to base everything that you're doing on what your team is doing. You wanna go mid? Too bad, there's already a mid and he's picked his hero. You wanna pick Spectre? Someone's already picked AM, you can't pick Spectre. You wanna push T2 bottom? If no one else thinks it's safe and won't follow you, you can't go. I mean...you COULD do these things, but you will lose almost guaranteed and your entire team will report you because you are not working in accordance with the social agreement that everyone signs when you queue up for a MOBA game, an agreement that exists in no other genre of game. It's not about having team members, it's about sacrificing your freedom and not getting to play exactly how you want to play because the team comes first. Counter Strike does not operate like this in any capacity and is why I ignored it because it was a stupid example

Have you played competitive Cstrike? Because that's just flat wrong. At anything beyond a noob level Cstrike is exactly like MOBAs in that you have to work as a team, co-ordinate your movements, and constantly make callouts to your teammates about information so they have a chance.

Playing Cstrike as a lone wolf will make you hated and will never allow you to get near a pro level. It actually has a great deal to do with your example.

TF2 and Battlefield are nothing like Cstrike. Maybe you haven't played much Cstrike...

Your example of "you wanna go mid? too bad, there's already a mid" exactly occurs in Cstrike. You wanted to go long A? Well, your team called B. Be a team player.

If you don't do that your team will do exactly what you said a MOBA team will do, because you're not engaging the Cstrike social agreement. It sounds like you just don't know much about Cstrike hence thinking it isn't related. But I promise it is.

RazzleDazzleHour posted:

This is, I am sorry, hilariously wrong, and you being so rude about it makes it kinda enjoyable.

I dont' even mean at the eSport level. If you go play Cstrike with goons right now and you don't do callouts, they will hate you and tear you to pieces in chat or on voice. Just like your MOBAs.

My friends' kids all used Fortnite as a place to hang out, or they did; kids are fickle enough that idk if they've moved on or to what. There's something to the idea that it's good to have enough downtime/pace the game slow enough that there's actually room to socialize, though I think a lot of 'let's make a social space!' people ignore the fact that the game still has to be good enough that you want to play it.

"Why did WoW succeed where EQ failed?" was a popular genre of thinkpiece back when WoW mattered. My favorite was the guy who said it was because these games are all about running from place to place, WoW's superior ground textures won it the day. But the most plausible one was the guy who said it was humane enough to recommend to your friends who weren't already committed: he played EQ, he couldn't stop playing EQ, but he loved his friends and didn't want to ruin their lives.

I had a friend who came into work, clearly on zero sleep, and explained that it was because of a EQ run gone bad. Around 2 am he died, and all the gear he had equipped--and had worked for for months--was left on his corpse, and he and his gang had to put on their inferior backup gear and go kill the monster that had killed them to retrieve it. He did, after several hours of a comedy of errors, but he didn't get a lot of work done that day.

The entire reason they patched in safe mode is because the monsters are terribly designed and have the exact same problems as the monsters in Amnesia.

The problem with that became obvious when I tried it on safe mode after beating it normally. It actually makes the game funny in a way that completely kills the immersion and turns it from a good game into a bad game.

The monsters run up and stop ten feet away from you. Then they just stand there and stare at you. If you move, they follow you until they're ten feet away from you again. If you approach them, they back away from you.

If they were going to take it to that extreme then they should have just deleted the monsters altogether.

I edited my post because I knew you would do this. I didn't mean eSport level, I meant if you aren't just a total noob. If you play Cstrike with the goons in this forum they will yell at you if you don't do what your team says, or don't talk and engage with team strategy and tactics.

Cstrike matchmaking has a mode called "competitive" where you play fixed rounds and its very serious. But anybody can play "competitive" its a different ruleset from doing like, a respawning mode. Again, your ignorance of the game seems to be factoring into you blowing me off. If you don't know the game, ask questions don't be a jerk about it.

Now you're being defensive. Dude, you were wrong and you called me stupid, please be better.

E: I mean poo poo, with noob players of MOBAs you can also get away with not saying anything. Plenty of people play LOL at low rank and don't engage. But all your points apply to anybody who is trying to take the game serious; same with cstrike.

This is not the average user experience. 5-man premade stacks is not how the average person plays this game, and of loving course the four people who are playing with you would get mad if you didn't want to strategize with them. This does not mean the game has a social contract. You don't have to worry about getting reported for not going B, or for not throwing a molotov in the right choke. Again, in the average CS game, people aren't even talking, even in ranked mode.

Let me ask you this, honest question: have you ever gotten mass reported and tempbanned for buying the wrong weapon? Legit question. If it's happened to you even once I'll concede everything. Someone looked at your weapon, said "why did you buy that" and your whole team reports you. People have been legitimately banned from MOBAs for not playing right. And the community response to this is "yes, of course, there is an acceptable way to play this video game and not following it is punishable." Counter Strike does not have anything remotely like this

Some people play MOBAs and don't voice chat. Some people ban, some people don't. My experience at least with CS was that people do actually talk in ranked mode. And the same thing, maybe people will ban you if you do something stupid every round, maybe they won't. I don't think you can definitively say that always happens in MOBAs and never happens in CS, its not nearly that stark a difference, they're very very similar.

I haven't because I don't do stupid poo poo and haven't played cstrike in years because its too stressful (same with MOBAs, gently caress that life's too short) But I promise you 100% I have seen a group of people all say "ban X" because someone was running off by themselves and getting shot first every round, or buying the wrong weapon, yes. So please concede everything.

I mean dude honestly, even without asking me, ask yourself. Based on what you know of gamers, and competitive games like Cstrike, do YOU think that's ever happened? I mean of course it has!

I don't know if its ever gone as far as like, Valve saying "that's the game" the way Riot has apparently, but you have to concede the original point. "CStrike is nothing like MOBAs and is a dumb example!" is just... not fair.

Yes, that IS a thing that a moba has that Cstrike doesn't have. I didn't say they were literally the exact same game. I said both require communicating with your team.
