Chapter 13 It's My First Day This "chapter" is only 12 strips long. But it manages to pack a lot of bad into it.  So this is the set up to Luna becoming a researcher at Mominic's University, which does seem to be literally a modern research university like I'm assuming Mookie attended. It never struck me until now how ridiculously anachronistic the way. We see or hear also the inclusion of awful early 2000's Internet humour, like the pirate craze.  Oh look, it's Melna! As with most female characters in Donnie Deegan Melna is an awful example of a nuanced character is really a caricature of a man hating feminist, and we all know why she's like that. I hate Luna looking at the fourth wall while she thought-bubbles to the audience, it's so anime cringe. This is where we also learned that Tusk mouth is just an affliction that some people have, more on that later!  Here's a whole wacky cast of characters, each terrible in their own way. Runcible Spoon is just another monkey cheese random humour character, so stock and clichéd that he almost merits no further comment. Cassafinn is a non-entity who barely figures into the stories, except for that one time I remember where runcible makes her boobs expand to enormous proportions. The Nielen is the the smooth operator, also a stock character from many bad animes, except in this case everybody instantly hates him from the get go, so it's not really clear why he has such a smooth talking reputation. Oh it also at some point in the future I remember that Jacob tortures him to death. After he tries to steal Luna from Dominic of course. And see they all know that Melna's a man hater.  Yeah gently caress the townies again, god I hate them so much! Here's Luna credit Dominic was literally her entire character arc such as is it is. I actually don't disagree with Melna that Luna should be smacked for saying that. This is fetishization of a different kind but it is just as gross as Helixa dying with her boobs all covered in blood. It's this desire for a woman who was so broken that Mookie can build her up to a person again, earning her eternal gratitude. Luna isn't a person, she has no agency outside of Dominic.  Praised Dominic for his selflessness! Also once again not a way that a person who actually tried to commit suicide would talk. This whole thing is just so over-the-top saccharine bullshit. And really I don't think that we've ever seen Dominic treat Luna as an equal, or respect her. We've seen him put her on a pedestal, which is not the same thing, but there really hasn't been any time to deftly judge how Dominic treat Luna normal settings.  Here's where Mookie blunders into talking about things he really doesn't understand. The framing of this, where the orcs are the backwards foreigners who make women valueless without being married, is is a classic sort of Orientalist framing of things. Callan is American society, and to Mookie it apparently contains no systemic patriarchy at all. Whatever Croona was doing was purely her own work, and had nothing to do with the greater society around. And he is using the orcs, who are obviously coded as indigenous and presented with social structures that are now unfamiliar in the West like clans, as a way of speaking to the idea of a primitiveness and backwardness to their social customs. While almost all societies on earth have patriarchal structures that need to be addressed, the framing of them as if America and the West are further along the women's rights timeline or ladder, is incredibly problematic and has been used to justify interventions in foreign countries, like I mentioned during my rant on Star Power. I'm not saying you can't have patriarchal elements in your stories, or have different societies exploring feminism or feminist issues. But if you're going to set up such an obviously coded for in other as being the one with the gender problems, then you are engaging in racist stereotypes.  Once again Luna slips into self-pity only to have all the characters bend over backwards to tell her what an enormous genius she is, in a way that we never understand or are shown.  Mookie's descriptions of the elements are so boring, and they don't even really work well. We all know that fire means passion because passion = body heat = fire. But saying you are as passionate as a fire does really make sense a metaphor.  And again the most on the nose duality metaphors that Mookie can think of. Everybody hates them for being a womanizer too, like I said. In the testing that they do seems to be just torturing him.  Luna has of course instantly impressed everyone and they all of her has a new member of the staff. Nielen, being the terrrible sex haver, wants to get into her pants.  And here's where you see that Cassafinn largely exists to show cleavage Melna is really there the parts of this it stands out to me, how right from the get-go you can tell that he was planning something heinous with her. And it's funny to me how problematic the very first presentation of the orcs we see is. Literally the first thing we learn about their culture is that they are brutal to their women. Good job Mookie. I was wondering how it could honestly go downhill from the mess it already was. Ah. Ah. You know that scene where all the germs in Mr. Burns' body are trying to get through the door at once and they can't because there's too many? That's how I feel about this. The quality just went so, remarkably BAD, in so many directions at once, so severely, I cannot honestly keep up. I can't say anything because if I start it's going to be a dozen paragraphs. Holy gently caress. Luna only defining herself in relation to Mookie. The orc wanting to punch any woman who was ever reliant on a man. Their superhero skintight leotard wizard outfits. Runcible SPOON. Mr. Sexboy. Luna doing the coding equivalent of "oh, you forgot to close a bracket" "HOLY poo poo YOU'RE A GENIUS". Oh my god, it got bad like, really fast.

You know one thing that actually gets better with Dominic Deegan is the pacing, early on you can kinda see how Mookie can’t wait to do his big reveals...so he doesn’t. Like I bet he must’ve felt like a super big smart boi for thinking of that duality of Neilen scene, but instead of taking the time to establish him as a nice guy and then having him suddenly flip on Luna later, this dude comes in just to go “Yeah actually Neilen sucks” and we’re supposed to take his word for it. That’s clearly a trace of two different posing figures; the waist makes no sense, but I think the upper body and legs work separately. Also very on-brand to trace some Shaolin monk photos and combine them badly to try to rip off a pose from Avatar, on Mookie’s part. Someone described this new university story as a huge drop in quality; I think this is true but it’s no worse than the Slaughterball team story. Mookie’s high fantasy nonsense is bland slop, but any attempt to depict a society or human relations in it is where his storytelling becomes terrible and insulting. He has nothing useful to say, sprays misogyny everywhere, and can’t understand the slightest implication of his flailing world-construction. This is as at least as bad as before but less baffling and that makes it worse.
